Jamie Dukes calls Ryan Mallett “a Caucasian street guy”

Allstate Sugar Bowl - Ohio State v Arkansas Getty Images

Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett has been criticized from many angles. There are rumors, via Tony Softli 101espn.com, that Mallett did drugs in college, and that he may even have been addicted. Others scrutinize Mallett’s leadership skills.

We know he can’t run.

But NFL Network’s Jamie Dukes has struck a new blow to the Mallett pinata, and it has nothing to do with athletic ability, on-field performance, or off-field habits that could ultimately affect Mallett’s play.

“For the lack of a better phrase, he’s kind of the first — and forgive this phrase — kind of the Caucasian street guy,” Dukes said on Wednesday’s edition of Total Access. “And what I mean by that, he’s got that Eminem, slash, ya know, Vanilla Ice thing that goes on.

“I just don’t think, truthfully, people are accustomed to seeing a quarterback . . . having a little street in him. And I think that’s kind of unsettling.”

Total Access host Rich Eisen had a pretty good line after Dukes’ observations, speaking of a fellow NFL Network on-set analyst:

“Trent Green may not have street in him.  I bet he’s got cul-de-sac in him.”

There’s a word for white guys that act like black guys and we all know what it is. I won’t say it and Dukes couldn’t say it. Malibu rapper anyone?

  9. brownsfn says: Apr 14, 2011 7:58 PM

so its OK for a african american to say racist remarks towards a white fellow??? Weird…*eyes roll*…

  10. hammer7329 says: Apr 14, 2011 8:00 PM

Of course it’s not racism. A black man can say anything he wants about a white man and it’s ok. Jamie Dukes…meet David Duke.

  19. navis97 says: Apr 14, 2011 8:07 PM

hello double standard, haven’t heard from you in a while.

ryan mallett may have a little street in him, but Jamie Pukes looks like he ate a street.

    Ass.

  20. stlrams8 says: Apr 14, 2011 8:10 PM

This is really no different than a white person calling an african american male, Uncle Tom. May not mean the same, but just as ignorant of a comment.

  21. iamtalkingsolistenandlearn says: Apr 14, 2011 8:12 PM

wow, talk about a double standard.

Sorry Jaime Dukes. You have no knowledge of Mallet’s personal life. You are just putting your own spin after hearing other people’s comments about Mallet. They als most likely don’t know Mallet personally.

Now to the double standard. So a black man says “Caucasian Street Guy”
but a white man (especially on this site) cant say Black hood (rhymes with snug)

  22. canadianvikingfaniii says: Apr 14, 2011 8:14 PM

This isn’t the first time that race was mentioned in questionable manner, remember Chad Greenway’s interception against Giants of the 09 season. It was called “White men can jump” in the NFL videos..

  23. marinofreakout says: Apr 14, 2011 8:16 PM

yo dukes you gonna call out a white kid like that better make sure your white first. dont be padding double standards.

  24. downsouth49er says: Apr 14, 2011 8:18 PM

Another good old race fight starting, gotta love it!! All races have those who are just racists, and unfortunately the good suffers with the bad. I just wish there was a way to dispose of all you racists cowards. Black, white, chinese or whomever. Just rid the earth of you pieces of trash!!

  25. prior0knowledge says: Apr 14, 2011 8:19 PM

I have lost a little respect for Jamie Dukes with these comments. It appears to be an ignorant comment at best or a racsist comment at worst. Eninem is one of the most accomplished entertainers around and Vanilla Ice was a one hit wonder. The only similarity between Eminem and Vanilla Ice is that they are both white and rappers. Its like making a point by using, say, both Warren Moon and JaMarcus Russell. After all, they are both black quarterbacks and therefore interchangable (sarcasm).

  26. nacjim says: Apr 14, 2011 8:20 PM

Eminem is going to be writing a song soon taking a run at Jamie Dukes for the Vanilla Ice comparison.

  27. alkscout says: Apr 14, 2011 8:20 PM

Just to make it clear, I’m white and literally take no offense to what Jamie Dukes just said.

99-percent because I really don’t care about race either way and 1-percent because Dukes is such an idiot that I don’t listen to him period.

That said, had that come out of Mayock’s mouth and it was a black kid, all hell would break loose.

Just say you think he has some street to him dude, that’s it. College coaches have been saying it forever for both races, it’s universal.

  28. therolandobottom says: Apr 14, 2011 8:21 PM

  34. pwall1 says: Apr 14, 2011 8:31 PM

I have no idea how Jamie Dukes still has a job. He’s almost never right, makes inflammatory and ridiculous comments all the time, and is just generally uninteresting.

  36. lostsok says: Apr 14, 2011 8:40 PM

That was, at the very least, an wildly inappropriate thing for Jamie Dukes to say. Sadly, many people don’t get why making a statement that broad is racist. I enjoy Dukes on NFL Network, and I’m guessing this was not meant to come across as a racial comment per se, but he needs to think these things through.

this very spot of the web has taken way more swings at mallett’s pinata with rumor and innuendo for the last weeks/months than this (what i would call truthful) comment by dukes.

deb- i’m with you, eminem isn’t happy about the comparison. lol.

  60. psychostats says: Apr 14, 2011 9:34 PM

How is it that the gadfly of pro football blogs thinks this description of Mallett is “new”? It takes about a 2-minute web search to find (for example) that Pete Prisco of CBS Sports made the Eminem connection back in February. I suppose Jamie Dukes is prominent enough, and his comments blunt enough, to make this topic reach some threshold of discuss-ability?

Does this have anything to do with the mysterious “one thing to know about Mallet before judging him”? I’m talking, of course, about the cryptic report Peter King made recently.

  61. FinFan68 says: Apr 14, 2011 9:39 PM

If you watch NFLN much, you would see many comments where Dukes (and others) says things that do not necessarily come off as racist but do show racial “preference”. He is still trying to be one of the “cool kids” and he often shoves his foot in his mouth. Just take a look at who he defends or demonizes and how he does it. Honestly, I have rarely seen his comments show any depth or accuracy and it is puzzling how he has maintained his job on the network. Surely there are more insightful former players to throw in front of the cameras.

You know what, I agree. If white people have to walk on eggshells when commenting on anything race-related about any other ethnicity, then the same should apply towards racial remarks about whites. NFL Network should make an example of Dukes and let them know that just because you’re a black guy making comments about a white guy doesn’t make it okay. He sucks anyway, so they would be killing two birds with one stone.

  70. mhs8031 says: Apr 14, 2011 10:26 PM

Dukes should apologize or explain his remarks. He could cost Mallett money if his irresponsible attempt to get attention is taken seriously by anyone who doesn’t know that he is a babbling idiot. It is one thing to think it, but to say it on TV without support or reason is stupid. I hope he gets fired and sued.

To anyone who doesn’t think that there is an undertone of racism behind these remarks, think again. A “street caucasian” is a slur to blacks and whites.

jamie dukes may be horrible i won’t pretend to know but he’s saying that people find ryan unsettling b/c basically ryan seems to folks to be a bit different than most white boy qbs- what’s so wrong about that? codgers found elvis unsettling at the time – i’m stating that fact, does it make me rocknrollist? i don’t see anywhere in that quote where he thinks that perception is necessarily correct at all. reading what he said i didn’t detect any personal disdain for ryan, in fact i think he was calling out the fact that people have an issue with ryan for really no reason at all besides he doesn’t sound like a standard white guy.

  79. realfootballfan says: Apr 14, 2011 11:19 PM

First of all, the guys claiming reverse racism here while continuing to bring Newton up in this same conversation are completely missing the point. What Dukes brings up is the same strange scrutiny that the black QBs constantly face because they are black, except he’s a white man.

Therefore, he’s facing the same strange questions of his character rooted simply in how he talkks and “carries himself as opposed to his game tape because I’ve scrolled more than a few comments on his past stories where he’s slammed as dumb, stupid, unsophisticated, and a whole lot of other things under the sun simply based on how he talks, which is unfair whether you’re talking about a black or white man.

However, reverse racism guys, trying to use this as your crutch, give me a break and get a clue sometime this century. You have no idea what racism means obviously if you’re drawing that parallel from this situation.

If anything, many of you have made Dukes point here in the past because you’re too eager to judge a book by it’s cover rather than what any of these guys can do on the field.

  80. hobartbaker says: Apr 14, 2011 11:31 PM

I haven’t watched an NFLN show that features Jaime Dukes in years, he’s a complete idiot that is so stupid he leeches the insight of the talented and knowledgeable people around him.

Only we can call each other “Caucasian”.

  85. onderin says: Apr 15, 2011 12:13 AM

The funny thing about the comments is that people are saying it’s racism against Ryan Mallett. In reality this is more racist toward the many minority men whom this label is placed upon.

He said Ryan Mallett “a Caucasian street guy.” Then what is a regular “street” guy? I would guess he means the black men (or at least some of them) that make up the majority of the NFL. You don’t hear people make the distinction of “Black street guy,” or “African-American street guy.”

In my opinion, I think Jamie Dukes is saying Mallett is unique because peoples attitude toward him is related more toward the negative attitudes that are applied to black men. But for him to be so small-minded to not realize the assumptions his statements are making, it’s more of a mess than anything he’s said before.

It’s unfair to Mallett because he is being put in a box that can be considered unjustified. It’s even more unfair to black men because Jamie Dukes, consciously or not, is reinforcing the many perceptions that people have of black men in the inner cities.

And how the hell can you put Eminem and Vanilla Ice in the same sentence!? That’s just wrong in itself.

Go “rabble, rabble” in front of someone else’s castle.

  90. MikeHolmgren'sChins says: Apr 15, 2011 12:37 AM

If a white writer makes comments about the potential of an African American quarterback’s potential as a team player and leadership abilities it is “racism” ? However when African American journalist makes comments about a white quarterback it is “insightful journalism or commentary”. That is a double standard and hypocrisy. Why isn’t this man out on his butt or being suspended ? Let me guess, it is racist to suggest that and not politically correct? I think the correct term is (excuse the pun) Hogwash (considering this an article about a razorback.)

  91. philgrek says: Apr 15, 2011 1:30 AM

I agree 100% with Dukes (and it kills me to say that), but after watching Mallett sitting down with Gruden on whatever show I was watching, the very first opinion I got from the kid was that he definitely looked like a drug-user in the face, and the way he spoke was very “white-guy-who-hangs-out-with-alot-of-black-guys”..ish. He definitely had that thinned out face, and just overall had a very (for lack of a better term) “Street” appearance. He’s someone that I assume would wear his hat tilted to the side and with the sticker still on it. No lie. I’m not saying he’s a bad kid either, but that was the very first opinion I got. I’m rootin for him, but I gotta assume his off the field issues are legit

How really cares!!!!!?????!!!!!????? We live in a world that is too sensitive to everything being said. Jamie Dukes is right. Dude has some street and some attitude! These are the same things said when you’re not creating a forum. The same people that are complaining about this are complaining that football players make too much money. The truth is we live in a society that we are so mixed that this stuff doesn’t matter. what is said for one person is OK to be sad for another, white, black, male, female, Catholic, Jewish. Segregation is over! Move on! Blacks and Whites!!!! Get on!!!!

    Reverse Racism”

Another stupid “politically correct” term that doesn’t make any sense. When it’s aimed at anybody else but a white person it’s called racism, but when somebody does it towards a white person it’s called “reverse racism” as if whites are the only ones capable of actual racism. Ridiculous. Racism is racism is racism. Period.

The double standard we are held to is disgusting, and I for one am pretty sick of it.

Regardless, I will go on record & say……. BEST QB of the class, hands down, when it comes to being NFL ready. He can make all the throws necessary in any Pro Style O or Vertical O. Just needs to work on his decision making.

By the way, addict or not, many addicts have kicked the habit. Just think of how many MLB teams have kicked their own @$$ for not giving Josh Hamilton a chance…. I can tell you of one who is kicking themselves for giving him a chance & then moving him on for Edinson Volquez & Danny Ray Herrera (yep, I’m a Reds fan & would much rather have Hamilton in the OF to replace any of our OFs right now).

  102. rice4life says: Apr 15, 2011 7:41 AM

It was not racist. He was stating that there is a huge stereotype in the league that only black guys act street, so they don’t like to see a white guy act in that manner. It was not a negative towards Mallett, it was a blow to the stereotypes that the NFL uses for not just African Americans, but also for Caucasians and QB’s at that. I think sometimes people, all types of people of different cultures, just rush towards racism instead of trying to read into what was said.

Also, in reading some of these comments, it’s easy to see why racism still and will always exist.

He is untouchable because of his race and ethnicity. Its okay for Black people to talk about White people in this way its only when it is reversed that there is a problem. Regardless of his race it is also classless to call someone out in the media like that, Mallet has no forum to defend himself either. At a stretch it is also another case of do as I say not as I do, here we have Goodell making all players “responsible” for their actions but here is another of his “employees” crossing the line. What you going to do Roger? Nothing as usual!

You people kill me. A) There is no such thing as reverse racism. Racism is racism. If you reverse it, it is not racism. 2) Words do not a racist make, and yes I did that number thing on purpose. 3) Jaime Dukes is a black idiot. That is not racist, simply stating facts. The idiot part COULD be argued. The black part can not. I see nothing wrong with what he said other than the idiocy of lumping Eminem and Vanilla Ice together. I don’t like either one, but one is an accomplished artist, the other is building houses on the DIY network.

Jamie Dukes is right. I said the same thing about Ryan Mallet when I heard him speak. It’s not racist. He’s just saying those who might be racist don’t like this about Mallet. NFL coaches use to think all the polynesian players were in gangs.. It’s just the way the world thinks at times. mallet was probably hanging out on campus with most of the black players and dated a few black chic’s on campus and it didn’t settle well with the good old boys down there. It’s not like college dont smoke weed. A lot do. The NCAA only test before a bowl game and what it just found out it is that if put yourself in a drug habit

So when I saw this via Twitter yesterday, I was pretty pissed off about it. So I decided to send some Tweets out to @jamiedukes to call him out. Sent numerous tweets asking why he had to pull the racisim card on this kid. The kid is fighting to get drafted, and this jerk goes off and has to be racist. I’m sorry, but if Trent Green, who was standing right next to him, said “I think teams are staying away from Cam Newton because he is a BLACK STREET GUY”, there would be a huge uproar, and Warren Moon would come out and make it to where Trent wasn’t on NFL Network any longer.
The coward never replied to me. He should be fired. There was no need for him to have to throw out that Mallet was “Caucasian” at all. I have never liked Jamie PUKES from the start, and this has now solidified the HATE.

I’m white and don’t find Duke’s comments offensive in any way. Dukes may be a bit dramatic on the show but there is a reason that a center that never even made a pro bowl from 10 years ago has a position on the network. He plays that devil’s reject role a lot. Someone has to.

What’s funny is most of the buffoons here have made Dukes point for him by their comments on this post and in the past because they’ve drawn a million conclusions about Mallet being dumb, lazy, and irresponsible because he appears to be an urban type of player.

Therefore he could never be a good football player and needlessly incurs the wrath of what these strange white Americans see as ideal.

It’s 2011, yet people are still judging books by their cover and continually showing how moronic they truly are.

No, a “race card” is a “device” every african UNamerican pulls out, every time they don’t get, what they want, when they want it or when they’re asked to take the same advancement test that everyone else takes or when they lose their job, do to their own gross incompetance or lack of responcibility or work ethic and sometimes when they just have no other excuse or answer for any of their actions or lack there of.

Well if you said it like you spell, he was probably wondering what nerve you have to talk…. Jamie was right in what he said. Mallet is a little more hood than the other “caucasian” qb’s in the league and it gets exagerated because he is white. If he was black he would just have a little swagger. Jamie Dukes is not a good commentator.

Some white dudes in this thread are getting way too bent out of shape about some perceived double-standards in racial (not racist) comments about a white athlete, forgetting that – as white men – they benefit from virtually all double standards.

Some people get way too bent out of shape about racial (not racist) comments in relation to black athletes, thus allowing aforementioned white dudes to get their panties in a bunch. At least these people can point to hundreds of years of slavery and oppression.

Solution: Fire Jamie dukes, not because he’s racist but because he sucks. Black people, get over yourselves and learn to let idle racial comments pass. White people, SERIOUSLY get over yourselves and let idle racial comments pass. Problem solved.
