Spielman: Vikings would have to look if receiver slipped to No. 12

Julio Jones

Four positions come to mind for Vikings VP Rick Spielman when considering possibilities for the team’s No. 12 overall pick: quarterback, offensive line, defensive line and safety.

With that said, Spielman said he wouldn’t ignore value if it presented itself at wide receiver should A.J. Green or Julio Jones fall to Minnesota.

“Potentially if one of those receivers slides down to 12 and Sidney Rice doesn’t return, there are things you can do to fill that need as well,” Spielman told Florio on PFT Live Friday.

It’s misinformation season, so perhaps Spielman was trying to inspire someone interested in Jones to trade up ahead of the Rams at No. 14.  Jones spent Thursday in St. Louis before visiting the 49ers Friday, according to CSNBayArea.com.

We think it’s more likely the Vikings take care of their quarterback need by drafting Jake Locker — unless the Redskins beat them to it.

If one of those 2 are available then go for it then trade your 2nd and 5th to move back into the first round to get our QB. GOOD FIRST ROUND!!

The Vikings are hosting Nate Solder (OT) today. They have had in quarterbacks (of course) defensive ends and have even talked up big time about Jake Locker who I would not have a problem with. But don’t let the fact the Ryan Mallet (who no one has proven he’s really done anything wrong) to be the Vikings choice-he is the most pro ready of the bunch. I’m a big time college football fan and I think in order it’s Mallet or Jake as far as the Vikings first pick is concerned……….that is if Cam doesn’t slide but I think Cam will slide some. Gabbert will be the first quarterback off the board.

Why would the Vikings draft Jake Locker? Isn’t he the one that you guys said was inaccurate? We can just use Joe Webb if we aren’t worried about an accurate passer, at least he can run.

With so many team needs, I would think being in charge of drafting for the Vikings this year would be about as easy as it gets… Since they need so many positions, they’ve got a great chance that the best player on the board is someone we need, so why stretch for anyone?

Worst case scenario is that we do bad again and hope for a better QB class next year. It’s not like we’re going to be overwhelmingly competitive this year, what with the Packers and Bears playing at the level they’re at now…

    How do you spell “smokescreen”?

The draft has more misinformation than an election AND Fox News combined!

Im not gonna lie if rice resigns and they got one of these guys just think about it- Jones/Green, harvin, rice, peterson, shiancoe= unstopable, but you need a qb, im thinking trade up grab locker ponder or dalton, it would be hard to not be successful in that offense

  6. thefiesty1 says: Apr 15, 2011 4:16 PM

No, no. One for those guys is going to Cleveland. The Vi-queens need a QB. If they don’t take a QB or trade for one then they are expecting Farve to come out of retirement — again.

I heard the vikes are going to put up a website where fans can vote on who they should pick because Spielman doesn’t have a clue. Geez, the guy hasn’t really done this job before. Chilly used to do all this stuff and its just so much pressure!

Heck, I’ll just be happy for the idiot franchise if they can remember to hand in their choice in time… I mean, they have had a history of not making picks in the past. How embarrassing!

Before the lockout they signed that CFL receiver who has similar size to Rice, so they could have something special in him with some proper grooming.

    Unbelievable…

Rookies aren’t that great their first year. Sorry Charlie. And that still leaves the problem of not having an O-line to contend with. Yeah, that little problem got Favre (the NFL iron man that had never missed a game) killed last year.

Really? I guess it’s true what they say about hope and bliss though!

  10. ez2bpackersfan12 says: Apr 15, 2011 4:33 PM

YES if you are smart you take either receiver if there still availabe. then you put together a package to get kevin kobb..and let it go sydney rice aint comin back

  11. nflsucker says: Apr 15, 2011 4:41 PM

Pretty obvious Minnesota needs to upgrade its buffet before they reach for a big name receiver.

  12. spikeit2times says: Apr 15, 2011 4:54 PM

Sensitive place we have here? LOL! I was joking about this place selling “misinformation” where there is none, especially with overwhelming evidence to the contrary. What’s with removing my comment?!?!?

Anyway; The Vikes have no need to dish out misinformation. They have too many needs and everyone knows that. They have a history of taking the BPA. They selected AP when they didn’t need a RB.

But I would be disappointed if they didn’t get a QB in the 1st round. How many years can they not draft a QB? How many years have they gone wihtout doing so and gotten no where? When will they learn they NEED to take a top QB.

  13. staff2cj4td says: Apr 15, 2011 5:30 PM

hahahahaha you could give these sorry roof collapsers 3 picks in the top 12, they are gonna be the bottom of the division for years to come!!

  14. 28purple4mvp says: Apr 15, 2011 5:38 PM

Rookies aren’t that great their first year-Maybe your rookies suck but if im not mistaken we have drafted the rookie of the year 2 times in the last 3 drafts-spielman will do it again-matt ryan had a great year in his rook season, joe flacco, same need i go on

  15. 23chameleons says: Apr 15, 2011 5:53 PM

So Spielman says that the Vikes would have to “look at” one of the WR’s if they fall to them at 12. If he’s trying to inspire someone to move on up like George & Weezy, wouldn’t he be directing people to trade with Houston who sits 1 spot ahead of Minnesota ? The Texans have a number of holes to fill and one of them isn’t WR.

If anyone gives this any credence, we Texans’ fans have to thank Rick Spielman for making it happen because the Texans contingent hasn’t done anything so far in drumming up interest in someone trading up.

Well, if you listen to these so called gurus in the sports media, the only QB who miraculous became NFL ready is Blaine. See what a well connect agent can get you.

Jake and Cam a supposedly inaccurate and since they can’t really touch Mallett’s arm, they simply accuse him of being too slow..*insert eye-rolling*

Jake inaccuracies was supposedly magnified during the Senior-Bowl and Cam over-threw a couple of long ones during the Combine.

But honestly, I don’t see what the heck they are talking about wth Jake and I’ll take Cam over throwing a couple of long catchable balls than Blaine’s short and can be intercepted or out of bounds throws any day. It shows Cam has an ARM.

As I said before, having a well connect sport agent can cover over a multitude of sins. No one as yet to explain to me how Blaine could be praised for having such an “outstanding” Pro-Day when the couple of clips that his PR folks in the media would dare to allow us to see have him sailing a ball out of bounds, where the receiver had to use one hand to reel it back in, without wind or anyone in his face. The other clip, the camera man didn’t even bother to follow the ball to see where it landed…

  17. schmitty2 says: Apr 15, 2011 5:55 PM

How about a good QB to throw the ball first?

  19. FinFan68 says: Apr 15, 2011 6:33 PM

The rookies are not old enough to play QB for the Vikings :) Kerry Collins is a likely option if Tennessee dumps him

  20. 52sackmachine says: Apr 15, 2011 6:46 PM

I am guessing the redskins want Cam…or peterson if there trying to move up..Denver would be smart to trade back, since those two clubs seem to trade often.

  21. okemon says: Apr 15, 2011 6:49 PM

Fraziers first year as head coach… QB is high on his list….. look for them to trade back and pick up mallet … if hes gone their next pick. Locker is too questionable with his inconsistency issues. I still like kaepernick

  22. brewdogg says: Apr 15, 2011 8:41 PM

Funny, weren’t we talking about the same thing a couple weeks ago……

Just thought I would point out to the people who are talking about QBs…..

    Stafford had Johnson….
    Roethlisberger had Ward…..
    Ryan had Roddy…..

    Carr had…..????
    Couch had….????
    Smith had…..????

Why does the rookie QB have to come before the WR again? Explain the precedent that leads to this conclusion please?

  23. favrelous says: Apr 15, 2011 8:44 PM

I am as clueless as everyone here. but, i have a feeling the they will get Mcnabb or Hasselback, take best player available at # 12 and draft a qb in round 2.

WHO WAS THAT PICK????? The player that went in front of them wasn’t who they were going to pick & now their pick is down on the salary scale.
Don’t make it out to be something it wasn’t. From now on have your mom check your posts, so you don’t keep making an ass out of yourself.

The Vikings don’t need a WR, they traded for Randy Moss.

oh, wait a minute, do you mean to tell me that Moss is no longer on the team?

    sorry, never mind.
