APConfirming once again the perception that he talks a bit too much, Joe Theismann posted earlier today on his Twitter page a message confirming that he won’t be returning to NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football in 2011.
“Guess y’all figured out won’t b doing Thursday night Football,” Theismann wrote. “But it was alot of fun last yr. Will still b doing playbook, now let’s play.”
Theismann has since deleted the message. (Theismann has yet to delete a subsequent message, in which he re-tweeted an expression of condolences from a follower: “Terrible News Joe, still think you Mike Patrick and Paul McGuire were the best booth going!!” With Theismann’s tweet deleted, the re-tweet makes no sense.)
The disclosure came before any announcement from NFL Network that a change will be made. Presumably, someone from NFL Network let Joe know that no one is supposed to know that he won’t be back.
Mike Mayock reportedly will be replacing Theismann and Matt Millen, who doubled up as game analysts in 2011. Play-by-play man Bob Papa reportedly was required to re-audition for the job. Gus Johnson reportedly auditioned for the position, too.
As a PFT reader recently pointed out, it remains to be seen whether Theismann sends Mayock into the gig by inviting him to “break a leg.”

Best news of the month……Now break a leg Joe……….
Say it ain’t so…
Big news!
Thank You God. LT should have broke his jaw, instead of his leg.
Never liked Theismann. Wait….I did when Taylor sacked him and I saw his fibula sticking out. I wanted to hang my Raiders coat on it.
Thank God.
“Joe… still think you Mike Patrick and Paul McGuire were the best booth going!!”
*********
Dude! Put the crack pipe down and back away from the keyboard…
Mayock+Gus Johnson= Awesome
…”still think you Mike Patrick and Paul McGuire were the best booth going!!”
I can’t fathom any actual fan posting that message. The only commentator worse than McGuire is Theismann.
They need to get rid of Papa too. Guy doesn’t have the voice to be a lead color guy.
Thank God…now get rid of Millen and we will be all set…
This is good news. I hear fox news is looking for special reporters Joe!
Papa is too arrogant and condescending/talks down to people. Out he goes. Bring on Gus “Wild Wings” Johnson and Mike “Suffer’n Succotash” Mayock. Raincoats and umbrella’s will become standard attire for Thursday night viewing.
praise the lord. now bring on the replacements
NFLN is brilliant. Their low point for the past few years has been without question their game broadcasts, especially this last season.
If only the league ran the actual league as well as they do their channel…
hallefrickinglujah!
Now if we can just get rid of Christina Colinsworth…
No Way!!! All Mayock does is scream uncontrollably into the mike for 3 straight hours….I can’t take that. What a stupid move.
On another note, please make Alex Flannagan where bikini’s while doing the sideline reporting….THE WOMAN IS SMOKIN’ HOT!!!!
This news just made my day.
He has talked his way out of 3 jobs. sunday night, monday night, now thursday night.
Out there is probably a hard working grad student majoring in broadcast journalism who will get passed over because some bonehead executive will appoint theisman to make nonsensical points during a football game.
Thank the lord, this guy is horrible. Hate listening to him and hate seeing him during the pre and psot shows.
I hope no one else gives him a chance.
And a grateful nation rejoices….
hooray
Hey Mike, was that MY break a leg comment you used?… I guess you guys do actually read the posts!?
Maybe we can have a gun duel between Millen & Joe, just give Millen blanks like he’s used to.
I plan to protest ths move by not watching any pro football this Sunday.
As bad as Joe was, NO-ONE could ever be as terrible as the football-illiterate Dennis Miller!!… It was painful and annoying to hear the others ‘educate’ Miller during the telecast… ‘Uh, Dennis, the brown oblong ball is called a FOOTBALL!’
Looking forward to the change
Bob Papa is an amazing play by play guy. As a giants fan, papa does all their games on the radio and i think he is one of the best. His voice raises in excitement even when the other team scores, something i think is necessary. u listen to other commentators who call opponents’ touchdown in a flat line voice.
“Joe… still think you Mike Patrick and Paul McGuire were the best booth going!!”
____________
wow…didnt realize Theisman’s mom was on Twitter…but not even she could type that w/ a straight face!
“Joe… still think you Mike Patrick and Paul McGuire were the best booth going!!”
Obviously this guys mute button was stuck in the on position for a long time.
Paul McGuire and Joey T see you later. They never were good commentators. Won’t be missed.
I’m really going to miss such insightful commentary like this gem from Joey T.
“That’s just a good example of a football player making a football play.”
I swear to God he said that. On air. Out loud. So others could hear him. That wasn’t a thought in his head – he actually said that on air.
I have always like Joe Theismann and I grew up a Steeler fan in Redskin country when Theismann was in his prime. Good luck Joe!
JUST HIT THE ROAD JACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He said some things in the booth last year that were so stupid everyone else was stunned into temporary silence. He said something like, “You know why they called that penalty? It’s a rule. That’s why.” The guy is like herpes. He never goes away, and nobody wants him around, but he keeps showing up.
FIRE Millen!! It feels good to chant that again…
