When Starr was drafted, there were only 12 teams in the league. So, to say he was drafted in the 17th round when there were only 12 teams doesn't sound so great now does it? According to Pro-Football Reference, Starr was taken 200th overall. Brady was taken 199th. Same spot even though Brady was a 6th round pick compared to a 17th rounder.

Starr was a great QB no doubt, but he was on a loser team before Lombardi got there. GB finished near or at the bottom every year Starr was there until Lombardi. After that, they won. So was it Starr? Or Lombardi? Brady has won ever since he stepped in for Bledsoe. And, don't say it's because of Belichick because the Pats were 5-12 with the Bledsoe-Belichick combo in 2000-2001. Brady's a MUCH better QB than Starr. Starr doesn't even make it into the top 5 all time discussion. He's the next tier, which is great, but not top 5.

I am not disparaging Starr at all. He was great, but he doesn't have the same story as Brady. But, if you bothered to do any research, you'd know that ESPN originally aired a SportsCentury feature on Starr on January 12, 2004.

i.e. Matt Cassel in 2008. Look at that roster. That Cassel did that well was because that roster the year before went 18-1.People also forget that Cassel is a pro bowl QB, not Antwon Randel El or some other QB scrub. Sadly that year...or fortunately for 31 other teams fans, Brady went down. The Pats were primed to run the table again.

The reason this is a story is how in this day and age do so many miss on this guy? It wasn't like he was invisible in college...only won a bowl game for fricking Michigan...

Disbelievers, go look at Brady's stats...if you can stand it.

Brady is a great player but i think they are overplaying this whole ordeal. like he was the best draft pick ever or something….please…..

Bart Starr was taken in the 17th round at pick 200(some say 199)! Wheres his special?!

Brady can keep the “tuck rule game” and all his close calls where someone else on his team kicked the winning field goal…..Bart Starr ran it in himself in the Ice Bowl….boom roasted!

---------------------------------------------------

Starr was taken in the 17th round and Brady in the 6th. However, rounds were much shorter when Starr was chosen. In fact, both players were pick 199, just in different rounds. Also, nice job discrediting his 3 Super Bowls and 2 MVPs because he didn't kick the game winning field goals. Quarterbacks throw the ball, field goal kickers kick it. Wanna also discredit his touchdown passes because he didn't catch them? He drove them down the field when it mattered most and set them up for the game winning field goal.

People talk about Brady being taken in the 6th round because he is the greatest draft steal of all time. There isn't even a debate on that. When one of the greatest and most successful QBs of all time becomes a complete afterthought and falls to the 6th round, of course people will make a big deal about it.

Oh yes the mighty, mighty Matt Cassel led Patriots who couldn’t even make the playoffs even though they rotated through the pee poor afc west and played in the equally pee poor afc east, a division that was won by the same Dolphins who had won ONE GAME the season before.

A mediocre high school team could have gotten 10 wins with that schedule.

You sir no nothing at all about football. 1st off no medicore HS qb makes it to the NFL. Every single NFL Quarterback was a star on the high school level. In any case Matt Cassel is indeed mighty. He had a great season with the Chiefs and helped carried a team that was bad last year into the playoffs.

New England has a great system and were able to identify two lightly regarded QBs that fit their system. As proof that it is a combination of both the player and system Cassel went out and had a pro bowl year last year with a different team.

Will Pioli just admit that they got lucky drafting Brady? Everyone knows it. They took a flier on him late in the draft and he turned out to be awesome. If they had any clue as to how good he would be they would have drafted him a lot sooner.

I don't know if Pioli told the story because it didn't listen to the podcast yet but when he was in NE he talked about how one of the things he did to remind himself that you can't rest on your laurels and how much luck sometimes factors into the draft is that he kept a photo of Brady and the other guy they picked in the 6th round ahead of Brady on his desk.
As a Pats fan, I will always have big love and respect for Pioli because I know he had opportunities elsewhere (including one with his father in law)and he stayed in NE for a couple extra years because he felt loyalty for how BB helped him along in his career. SP=class guy. That old school mentality isn't that common anymore.

Or they are a 10 - 6 team with a QB who never started a game since high school (matt cassel). Bradys a great QB but hes benifited from great coaching, defense, and a kicker whos an all time great. QBS dont win or lose super bowls, teams do. If Brady had been drafted by Clevland would he still be this great player? Who knows

Brady is a great player but i think they are overplaying this whole ordeal. like he was the best draft pick ever or something....please.....

Bart Starr was taken in the 17th round at pick 200(some say 199)! Wheres his special?!

Brady can keep the "tuck rule game" and all his close calls where someone else on his team kicked the winning field goal.....Bart Starr ran it in himself in the Ice Bowl....boom roasted!
