With less than a week to go before the first round of the NFL draft, the Carolina Panthers say they haven’t decided what they’ll do with the first overall pick -- and haven’t heard from any other teams that want the pick.
“If the draft was tomorrow we could go ahead and make decisions,”
Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney said Thursday night, “but we have a week left and we’re going to continue to refine those decisions.”
Almost everyone thinks the Panthers will take Auburn quarterback Cam Newton first overall. Hurney says the Panthers don’t know yet if that’s what they’ll do, but he did say he likes Newton.
“Obviously, like the rest of the players that are at the top of the board, we’ve spent a lot of time with Cam. It’s been a very good experience,” Hurney said. “I think he’s a very talented player that is extremely competitive. I think being successful in the NFL is very important to him.”
Hurney said he wouldn’t be surprised if someone makes an offer for the first overall pick next week, and that he wasn’t sure if he’d accept such an offer.
“We’ve got a week,” Hurney said. “Who knows?”
