Browns have a two-player wish list with pick No. 6

A.J. Green Pic AP

The Cleveland Browns will sit through the first five picks of the NFL draft keeping their fingers crossed that they don’t hear the names of their two favorite players called.

Browns General Manager Tom Heckert told the Akron Beacon Journal that his wish list with the Browns’ first-round pick in this week’s NFL draft, the sixth pick overall, contains only two players, and if neither of those two players is available when the Browns are on the clock, they’ll try to trade down.

Unless just about every mock draft we’ve seen is wrong (and that’s possible), one of those two players is George wide receiver A.J. Green. Almost everyone agrees that Green would do wonders for quarterback Colt McCoy and would be a good pick at No. 6.

The other name on the Browns’ two-man wish list is probably a defensive player, maybe Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus or North Carolina linebacker Robert Quinn. But whoever is on the wish list, those are the two names the Browns will hope not to hear before their own pick comes up.

I agree with Green, but the other player is probably Peterson. Heckert was practically salivating during his recent press conference when talking about him. I would be happy with either one. This class is fairly deep in d-linemen so I think they’ll be content with picking a couple up in the later rounds.

The Browns could have ALL 32 picks in the first round and they STILL couldn’t make the playoffs

  3. lbcoach34 says: Apr 24, 2011 1:40 PM

    1. Patrick Peterson
    2. Robert Quinn

This is actually a good year for the Browns to trade down. They can trade the #6 for a late first round pick and a mid draft pick or two and end up with both a decent DT and WR. Teams with as many holes as those picking in the top 6 rarely benefit from a single high priced pick.

  5. 1buckeye76 says: Apr 24, 2011 1:45 PM

    that was 3 names.

  6. krow101 says: Apr 24, 2011 1:49 PM

    Isn’t that 3 names?

  8. drumzan says: Apr 24, 2011 1:57 PM

Jake Delhomme is a top-tier paid NFL QB, so the Browns “clearly” don’t need a QB…

  9. brooklynniner19 says: Apr 24, 2011 2:13 PM

I would add Patrick Peterson to that list as well unfortunately for the Niners.

  10. citynative says: Apr 24, 2011 2:17 PM

hmmmm…. interesting. Many Browns fans said a couple days ago on this board that the browns would select peterson.

What? I think it is the CB from LSU and the DE from N.C.

  12. jimmybrock says: Apr 24, 2011 2:39 PM

Dareus will go either 1 or 2, so I don’t think he is on Heckert’s wish list.

I’m guessing it’s A.J. Green and LSU CB Patrick Peterson.

  13. dwatkins69 says: Apr 24, 2011 2:44 PM

Nope. Not Quinn. Possibly Peterson or Dareus!

  14. paulnoga says: Apr 24, 2011 2:45 PM

The Browns need more than a few players. Therefore, trading down should be first priority.

  16. brownsfn says: Apr 24, 2011 2:56 PM

The 2 players are AJ Green and Patrick Peterson…and one of them will fall to #6….good times on Thursday for Cleveland…

  17. gregwestlake says: Apr 24, 2011 3:15 PM

Marcel Dareus?? Why even have him on the list?

  18. vcstriker16 says: Apr 24, 2011 3:41 PM

This story is complete speculation based on mock drafts and the writer’s assumption. The title is ridiculously misleading.

This is, by far, the most unintelligent post I have ever read. You do realize this is the Browns team that beat New Orleans in New Orleans and also beat New England right? How many other teams can claim they did that?

  22. terpface says: Apr 24, 2011 5:30 PM

Whats the deal with Quinn? The guy was ultraproductive against against schools like Duke and East Carolina but didnt register a sack against even a mediocre team in the ACC. On top of that, he hasnt played football for a year…I just dont see it

  23. tehowdruid says: Apr 24, 2011 5:40 PM

Peterson and Dareus are the 2, no doubt in my mind

  25. wojlos says: Apr 24, 2011 6:07 PM

It’s obviously A.J. Green and Patrick Peterson. If the Bengals nab Green and Arizona picks Peterson, I think we’ll trade down for Julio Jones or Robert Quinn.

  26. canjura says: Apr 24, 2011 6:39 PM

well, whoever the players are, I hope they are taken in the top 5 so then they can trade their pick to my Rams so we can take Julio Jones. I’m just saying. :)

  27. bigtrav425 says: Apr 24, 2011 6:54 PM

We need a impact player,so they better not trade down.I do not see them trading down anyways unless its only 2 or 3 spots

  28. tizomps says: Apr 24, 2011 7:13 PM

PFT….that’s a really good pic to post of the number one wideout this year. I know pics of him actually catching a football are tough to find.

  29. 52sackmachine says: Apr 24, 2011 7:25 PM

I could see the Browns drafting Peterson. To me he is the best player in this draft. I also think alot of people believe Green is the pick, which they may be right. However, picking peterson, to help solidify a defense is more important. The browns could ultimatley once the lock out is over sign a free agent, like Green Bay’s James Jones, or Minnesota’s Sidney Rice.

  30. 440shane says: Apr 24, 2011 8:30 PM

canjura-while I could possibly see that scenario playing out, do you really think the Rams would pay what it would cost to move from 14 to 6? According to those draft pick value charts, that is like a 2-4 and a 3 next year and you get a 5 in return. That is awfully steep even to get Sam Bradford a true #1. I know my Brownies aren’t tearing it up but its not like the Rams are one player away either, I would think that would be too much for them to move up. Remember Mangini isn’t running our draft anymore where he would trade you his pick for yours and a couple of guys from your practice squad (Sanchez trade) God that makes me sick everytime I think about it……

  31. rocketdogsports says: Apr 24, 2011 8:31 PM

The common sense pick was Thomas. The common sense pick was Haden. the common sense pick is Peterson. the greatest impact for the longest time and the Browns have six more picks for need. Trade down only if Peterson is gone and the Rams, Skins, Vikings or Cowboys are suddenly stricken deaf dumb and blind.

  32. thefiesty1 says: Apr 24, 2011 8:38 PM

It’s AJ Green or else…… forget next season. Without a go to receiver Colt will struggle and they’ll miss the playoffs …again.

Maybe you should worry more about your Lions, troll!!!

  34. bluvayner says: Apr 24, 2011 9:12 PM

    A) /Running backs have lost their luster as first round draft choices. You don’t have to draft one that early to find a productive one. You can get a productive guy in the second or third round, oreven later if you have a decent O-line. Plus their careers are generally short, and unpredictable. The days of running backs going in the top five are all but over.

    B) The Pats biggest need is a pass rusher. Their second need is a pass rusher. Their offense will be fine. They need to draft defensive linemen/edge rush linebackers.

Seriously, iamtalkingsolistenandlearn? There’s one team with a worse record since the Browns returned in 1999 and that is the freaking Lions! We as Browns fans don’t have much room to talk, but we’ve got more room than Lion’s fans (me thinks Bungles fans too). It’s Peterson and Green by the way.

  36. browns1968 says: Apr 24, 2011 11:34 PM

  37. MikeHolmgren'sChins says: Apr 24, 2011 11:43 PM

This is a no brainer- the two are Dareus or Peterson. I think Heckert’s drafting history speaks for itself.

Who is the highest rated long-snapper out there?

  39. steelerer says: Apr 25, 2011 2:35 AM

peterson with the 6th pick, last year they took haden. Im not saying they wont do it. i would think they go after a interior Dline guy with it. I mean peterson and haden in the same backfeild is just crazy to think about, but you cant cover wrs for 5-6 seconds every play with no dline.

  40. canjura says: Apr 25, 2011 3:21 AM

440shane: honestly, I don’t think the Rams would trade all the way up to 6, but if he gets passed the 6 spot to around the Cowboy’s 9, I could definitely see it. Titans have Kenny Britt, they won’t invest such a high pick on another WR, Niners drafted Michael Greedtree, Cowboys have Dez Bryant. Rams would just have to move ahead of the Redskins to get him. :)

  41. ubummer says: Apr 25, 2011 6:05 AM

Last year Heckert picked Ward and Hardesty, moving up to grab Hardesty. Both had no question about talent, but lots of questions about health.

Sound like anyone in this draft? Like maybe Bowers.

You know what else is a joke? Your username. “Stairway to 7″? How’d that work out for you?

Steeler fans are so obnoxious and feel so entitled that they just assume they’ll win the SB and give themselves usernames accordingly. Then the Steelers proceed to be completely embarrassed and choke.

Now the poor guy can’t change his name. That’s *gotta* be embarrassing. Ouch.
