Dominik discusses new challenge of late round picks this year

With all the general managers that have appeared on PFT Live of late, we thought perhaps just about every angle of this unique draft had been discussed.

But Florio came up with a new one Monday, when he asked Bucs G.M. Mark Dominik about how the process of the last few rounds of the draft could be different without the ability to sign undrafted players.

Dominik mentioned how he used his final pick in the 2010 draft on defensive end Erik Lorig, in part because Lorig was a West Coast guy and the team wasn’t confident they could get him to sign as an undrafted free agent.

That sort of concern could be amplified this season. Teams may wind up leaning towards drafting guys in the sixth or seventh round partially out of fear they will sign elsewhere. Like the UFL.
