Publicly, Rex Ryan has said only nice things about Vernon Gholston. He felt a little differently back in 2008, when Gholston was coming out of the draft and Ryan was the defensive coordinator in Baltimore.
Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com has been skimming Ryan’s new book “Play like you mean it” and found a few choice passages about Gholston. Ryan reportedly told his friend Eric Mangini not to take Gholston.
“I didn’t like the kid coming out of college . . . thought he was a phony,” Ryan said.
Ryan says he was in Gholston’s corner once he was “one of my guys” but Gholston never did turn the corner.
A few other choice nuggets from Cimini, via the book.
1. Wes Welker apologized to Ryan and his wife about his foot jokes at the Pro Bowl.
2. Ravens owner Steve Biscotti recommended Rex to the Jets over Brian Billick, who won a Super Bowl in Baltimore. This is especially amazing because Biscotti would have saved $10 million he owed to Billick if the Jets hired him.
3. Ryan met with Brett Favre when he took the Jets job and told him he’d be “happy” to coach Favre. This goes against previous public statements from the Jets.
4. Finally, it wouldn’t be a Rex Ryan book without a little trash talking. On the Giants: “I know it’s going to p— off Giants fans, but … we are the better team. We are the big brother.”
