Finally, Smith did something sensible for a change!!!!

I hated how he was trying to be the helpful veteran to young receivers that can't play!!!

But in order for me to be truly satisfied and know that he wants to win Smith needs to publicly demand a trade!!!

To not demand a trade and stay with a perennial loser is not respectable in my mind. It shows you why nice guys finish last!!!

No doubt in my mind Smith will be a Patriot next season. My guess is the Pats are smart enough to realize he will be cut at some point and not even waste a pick trading for him. Though they do have plenty of picks to make a trade if they wanted to.

Like a lot of great players over the years, the firey and competitive Smith deserves to end his career with a ring, so I hope he can hook up with a contender. I'd love to see him go to the Jets. He has a Jet attitude and mouth that would fit right in.

The guy has issues with anger and self-control, yeah, but anyone who has ever watched him play knows he's the real deal. He's the sort who would play for nothing, I think. That's how much I believe he loves the game.

Steve Smith cleaned out locker, suite in Carolina before lockout
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 26, 2011, 11:33 AM EDT

Getty ImagesIt’s safe to say Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith won’t be among the handful of players that show up to team facilities on Tuesday.

Eric Edholm of ProFootballWeekly reports that Smith cleaned out his locker and luxury suite at Bank of America Stadium before the lockout ended.

Smith has a luxury box as part of his contract, which contains pictures and momentos from his career. He had them all removed, which is a strong sign that Smith doesn’t plan to return to the team. Edholm also confirms Smith has requested trades in the past.

As pointed out by Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com, Edholm and Smith have been working on a book together for a while. So it’s probably safe to say his sources are on point here.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera has admitted that Smith’s future with the team was unsure this offseason, and the team sounds open to a possible trade if trades are ultimately allowed once again.

Who’s going to waste their time to read Steve Smith’s book? I hope he doesn’t plan on making his millions off of that instead of football. I’m calling it now: Worst book of the year!

Personally I think the guy can still play at a high level. I would love to see him get a shot on a team w/ a good qb and a decent WR opposite him.

Steve Smith wears his heart on his sleeve. He also wears his ass on his face, complaining about anything and everything (except when he drops a bunch of passes like last year). The guy is a gamer, but he can take that ATTITUDE with him like the other WR’s who infect teams (Marshall, T.O., Ocho, Moss, neet I go on?)

He’s picking the wrong time to leave. With a new coach, a fresh approach, and either a new QB or an improved Jimmy Clausen, the Panthers will definitely be better than last year. Yes, Jimmy was terrible last year, but hello, he was a rookie. As far as rookies go, he wasn’t completely terrible.

Moving right along...Nothing more than the same selfish-righteous attack on an NFL athelete who isn't white.

@clintonportisheadd: Um, I believe the "they" he's referring to is NFL players.

You wanna know part of the problem and a factor in racism? People like you that think everything is a racist comment or mentality. 1) the posters comment seemed to have NOTHING to do with racism to me and 2) if it was why even say something to him/her? A racist is an ignorant fool and arguing with them or commenting to them will do no good but waste your time.

Stop trying to pull that card at every chance you get when it's not the case at all. Racism isn't nearly as bad in this country as some people (read YOU) like to believe. Does it exist, yes but so do lots of negative stereotypes some of which you probably use too. The good news is it's not nearly as bad as it was 3o years ago and beyond.

Agreed Pantherpride...

As a true panthers fan, I would hate to see him go. The guy has done nothing but make plays for us his whole career. Wouldn't be right seeing him in another uniform. But to be honest I hate when players go team shopping in search of rings... rarely works out for them anyways (i.e. Randy Moss). I'd rather him stay in Carolina than squander away his last few years jumping team to team.

I think it would be good for him at this point in his career to leave Carolina. If they do plan on drafting a new QB he most likely will be the face of the franchise and Smith would love to play for a contender. It would work well for both parties and Smith deserves it after the stellar career he has had for the Panthers.

The only place this guy would be suited is a strong organization with a great, veteran QB and an established head coach. That way they can just tell him "Know your role and shut your mouth." He treated Clausen like a dog in Carolina and would do the same with Newton. And no new, young head coach wants to put up with that.

Just look at the Rams last year when they were pondering acquiring T.O. They correctly passed as it would have been a disaster. You don't want your young QB and HC to have to deal with that.

As a Panthers fan I would hate to see him go but as a Steve Smith fan I'd like to see him win a ring. We're not going to the Super Bowl anytime soon so if we could get a 3rd round pick from a team like the Patriots we should do it. I know a lot of people hate the guy and think he's washed up but trust me he's still got gas in the tank. Give him a QB like Tom Brady and he'll catch 80-90 balls for 1,500 yards and they'll win yet another Super Bowl.

I could actually see this guy coming to the Chargers sometime in this offseason. Think about it, Floyd and Naanee are no longer on a contract, Jackson got the franchise tag, so basically the starting core is Vincent Jackson and Patrick Crayton. Rivers need an explosive and fast wide receiver and Smith fits that role. Unless the Chargers plan to pick up someone else in free agency or the draft. I don't see A.J. Smith letting Patrick Crayton to be the number two wide receiver even though we have Vincent Jackson, and Gates at the TE.
