Panthers owner Jerry Richardson “loves” Cam Newton

There’s a school of thought that Panthers owner Jerry Richardson is too conservative a thinker to sign off on his organization using the No. 1 overall pick on Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.

Newton is regarded as a boom-or-bust prospect. Many draftniks believe he’s far too risky for the monetary commitment generally associated with the top spot in the draft, at least based on recent No. 1 pick contracts.

But according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Richardson “loves” Cam Newton.

Per the PFT Visits and Workouts Tracker, the Panthers worked Newton out privately on March 16 and hosted him for an official, team-facility visit on April 5. Richardson likely got to know Newton during the latter meeting, and came away impressed.

So if the Panthers do pass on Newton in favor of Marcell Dareus, A.J. Green, or whomever else, it apparently won’t be because Richardson stuck his nose into personnel matters.

Nice try Jerry, but nobody’s trading up to #1.

This is like the third time this was a headline in the last 2 months…

is the current labor situation why we have not heard about any contract negotiations between the two sides yet, or is Carolina still undecided?

Well tomorrow night he can marry him…..let’s see how long the honeymoon lasts.

As Obama called the media…”Carnival Barkers.” He hit the nail on the head.

If Richardson really loves Cam as much as this article implies, he would use his influence to do what it takes to start mini camps and OTAs and allow Cam to work in a new offense.

That or tell Ron Rivera to call plays like “36”

  8. zerored78 says: Apr 27, 2011 2:40 PM

If he picks Cam, I hope he loves losing.

  9. krow101 says: Apr 27, 2011 2:40 PM

This is the same dirtbag owner who was so condescending to the players in negotiations, right? Now he lurves Cam? Sure he does.

AJ Green is a rare incredible talent. I would most definitely choose him as my first overall pick. But as far as the NFC South goes, all the other teams are solidified at QB. If the Panthers want to be competitive, they need a franchise QB. When you’re in a rebuilding year, you need to start at QB then build around that. You can find hidden gems to catch the ball. You just need someone who can throw it. Ask New Orleans, ATL, and TB.

I don’t care how much he loves him, Cam newton will not be the panthers saviour.

………and with the first pick in the 2012 NFL draft the Carolina Panthers select………

  15. tyelee says: Apr 27, 2011 3:12 PM

The Denver Broncos have to be HIGHLY excited if the Panthers do take Newton because then the Broncos get the chance to pick from the best of The BEST of Any position…….

John Fox should be greatful for his good fortunes if this happens that he is not under the anormous pressure of trying to win in Carolina with that guy!

  16. whitetail28 says: Apr 27, 2011 3:13 PM

These guys ruin QBs. A guy like this needs to go to a team that developes QBs or has a great system to learn from like GB or Indy. His odds of failing are waaaayyyy higher somewhere like Carolina. At least Minny hired a great QB developer as an OC in preparation.. Good call in Minny for once…

Cam Newton will love him back for about $30 million guaranteed.

evidently, Jerry Richardson is a lot smarter than most of the haters out there. anyone that can’t see that Cam Newton has the skill set to be a very, very good QB is a moron.

  19. thefiesty1 says: Apr 27, 2011 3:20 PM

He was also the in the lead with JJ at the negotiations and look what that got them. He will find out soon enough what his leadership has done.

  20. laxer37 says: Apr 27, 2011 3:40 PM

Having the #1 pick is a huge burden for whoever has it each year. That’s why nobody ever wants to trade up there.

The financial hit to the organization is devestating regardless of how the selection turns out.

Carolina is faced with rolling the dice on Newton who has never been asked to play under center. Or they can over-pay for a wide receiver that will realistically touch the football 6-8 times a game.

Go the safe route and take Dareus who can step in and play week #1.

What else would you say with a name like that?

    Really? Really?

Oh and hopefully your trees recover.

I googled Shifter to read the post. On the Google page right below, there was an old twitter post listed from Shifter saying that Harbaugh was definitely not going to San Francisco. O.K.

Too bad he can’t afford to draft him, because isn’t he among the brokest of the broke owners?

I imagine that suit and coat are from Village Thrift.

Oh, wait…you say he’s filthy rich? That the NFL is wildy profitable? No way!

But I give him a pass for his surly and unprofessional actions as of late, because if I made money off Arby’s (serving low-quality dogmeat to morons) I’d have no respect for human beings either.

  27. whitecastleisafoodgroup says: Apr 27, 2011 4:41 PM

Jerry should let the clock run out. Why spend the time and money on the very 1st pick of the draft who “has a huge upside”? Say what you want about Parcells but taking Jake Long was a smart move. If he took Matt Ryan the Dolphins would have even less money in their pockets and a former franchise QB who opted to take an injury settlement.

Cam may be a great talent but if Carolina doesn’t take a sure thing and immediate starter they are dumbasses.

It’s sad that everyone seems to read something on the internet and think it’s a fact. Jerry Richardson is not the mean old grumpy man you people think he is. He’s a leader and that’s why he’s having to play “Mr. Tough Guy” in these negotiations. You people should be glad he’s in these meetings because if the players win say goodbye to the NFL you know and love. Oh and the people who think he’s cheap obviously don’t follow the Panthers. He offered to make Julius Peppers the highest paid DE in the game. It’s not his fault Peppers didn’t sign the contract. Say what you want but you’re wrong. Jerry Richardson is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. A true southern gentleman. When this man saves the NFL you’ll all be kissing his ass.

The reputable source that is ESPN…. didn’t they think Brian Westbrook called in to them a few years ago but it was actually some rando?

  30. MichaelEdits says: Apr 27, 2011 8:46 PM

It’s all a smokescreen. What my Panthers REALLY want is to steal the legendary Charlie Whitehurst.
