Is there anything a young person can do after acknowledging past mistakes to redeem himself? How many of us did stupid things in our youth?Are you guys capable of judging your own future based on what you did in the past ? Jimmy Smith is now a Baltimore Raven. I, for ,one wish the young man a very,very successful career. The Raven locker room has some very strong positive role models. There are so many people that do not believe in redemption. Who are we to judge anybody?

All the talent in the world doesn’t do your team any good if the guy’s going to be suspended. Why would you waste a good pick on this guy?

And why exactly was CU drug testing players if they didn’t care what the results were? Yet another great memory of the horrid Dan Hawkins era.

this was for whomever decided to post without facts. me thinks he fell for the ‘purple drank’ being referred to above also (ie: Robitussin..)

Me thinks he was searching for the buzz that comes with ‘robo trippin’ as the kids refer to it..dextromethorphan (DXM) to be more precise with it’s hallucinogenic induced properties and affects the sensory controls. I wonder if they test for DXM in the NFL?

Athletic? sure..stupid? yep..Bengals should move him to the top of the heap.

funny that mallett is rumored to have smoked some pot, drink and MAYBE do some other drugs but has never failed a drug test and his ‘character concerns’ are off the charts possibly dropping him as far as the 3rd round.
how is it even possible, if this kid really has failed three drug tests, that he even was allowed to play in college? from what i have seen though, smith has superstar talent, hope that he straightens his sh32 out.

APColorado cornerback Jimmy Smith is on the short list of the most talented players in this year’s NFL draft. But he’ll likely have to wait at least a few hours to hear his name called tonight.

The reason is that NFL teams have major questions about Smith’s character, and those questions include the abuse of drugs, specifically codeine.

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Smith flunked three drug tests at Colorado, and he told at least one club that one of the three was for misusing codeine.

Codeine may be a particular red flag for NFL teams right now. The Raiders want to trade up into the first round and were once thought to be interested in moving up for Smith, but the latest reports out of the Bay Area indicate that the Raiders aren’t going to take a chance on a guy with a codeine issue so soon after the JaMarcus Russell debacle.

Smith’s character problems (which also reportedly include issues with alcohol, getting women pregnant and an arrest for assault) are so voluminous that a survey of 24 personnel executives found 11 of them wouldn’t even take him in the second round, let alone the first.

Still, it only takes one team to like Smith enough to take him in the first round. And no one doubts his talent.

It’s sort of bizarre.

Many folks in the NFL have/had opiate issues (Favre and Sean Payton to name but 2) but when black folks like Johnny Jolly, Russell, and this kid Smith) it’s a “red flag”.

Reminds me of the double standard on cocaine. White folks with powder get probation and black rocks with rocks get jail.

Favre got prescription medication for an injury, the medication was one of the most addictive in the world, and he got hooked.

Smith and JaMarcus are downing cough syrup from CVS. It’s not like they have some recurring hacking cough and used it for legit purposes then couldn’t kick it.

Sad to see such supreme talent ALREADY wasted. As a Cowboys fan I not so secretly hoped we could grab him in the 2nd round. Not anymore. I’ve been all in for Pacman, for T.O, for Tank Johnson, every headcase before during and after the signing. Let him enjoy his drank somewhere else, I’d rather see Newman get scorched again than……. well. Maybe If he’s in the 3rd round.
