Source: Kaepernick is No. 1 QB on Raiders’ draft board

Colin Kaepernick AP

Twelve days ago, a league source told PFT that one unnamed AFC West team informed Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick that he is the No. 1 quarterback on their draft board.

PFT has tracked down the team.

Per a league source, it’s the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders hosted Kaepernick for an official, team-facility visit on April 12. Thursday morning, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Oakland is trying to trade into the first round of the draft.

Michael David Smith speculated that Kaepernick could be the Raiders’ target. Other reports suggest it could be Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith.

Meanwhile, NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora told a Miami radio show Thursday morning that he believes the Dolphins will draft Kaepernick with the 15th overall pick.

Kaepernick was not included in renowned draft prognosticator Rick Gosselin’s first round.

The Dolphins or the Raiders. Where quarterbacks go to die…

Lets hope for this kid’s sake the above item isn’t true.

  2. thephantomstranger says: Apr 28, 2011 12:46 PM

Why is it for three months everyone had the QBs going pretty much in the same place, with most going early in the second round. Now all of a sudden Locker is going 8th, Ponder is going 10th, Dalton is going 12th, and Kaepernick is going 15th. This is ridiculous.

  3. weswelkerspornstash says: Apr 28, 2011 12:46 PM

Good thing he will still be there in round 3…

  4. PurpleRaid18 says: Apr 28, 2011 12:50 PM

well yeah, look at his 40 time.

  5. heyguru1969 says: Apr 28, 2011 12:50 PM

I watched a ton of Nevada football last year, and I’m convinced that quietly Kaepernick is going to turn out to be the best QB in this draft. “But he’s got a funny sidearm motion. He’ll never make it in the NFL.”

Same was said for Phillip Rivers. Exact same thing. You can’t teach being a leader and winner, and Kaepernick is both.

  6. boknowsvt says: Apr 28, 2011 12:51 PM

I only want this guy drafted if he can play O-line. Al shouldn’t be looking at anything else other than O-line in this draft.

  8. jennstergersburnedretinas says: Apr 28, 2011 12:53 PM

Isn’t there some legally binding contract that states ” All Raiders stories MUST include Al Davis’ SARS ridden face”?

    Silva, you’re getting fired dude.

  9. acerockefellar says: Apr 28, 2011 12:53 PM

    only the raiders…

And didnt it come out that jimmy smith failed 3 drug tests, and admitted abusing codeine(AKA purple Drank)

I’m not a fan of the raiders or anyone in that division, but both of these sound like bad ideas.

  10. jaggedmark says: Apr 28, 2011 12:55 PM

#1 QB on their board? Ahead of every other QB in this draft?

  11. thehighhat says: Apr 28, 2011 12:56 PM

The Al Davis kiss of death for a QB.

  12. suhperman says: Apr 28, 2011 12:58 PM

Thank you for not showing the Al Davis picture on this one!

  13. sneaky1632 says: Apr 28, 2011 12:59 PM

The Raiders always have a funky draft board, mix it up boys.

  14. joetoronto says: Apr 28, 2011 1:00 PM

Oh, you guys know what’s going on with the Raiders, OK.

FYI, this rumor has been around for about 2 weeks now.

  15. romosexualtendencies says: Apr 28, 2011 1:01 PM

this would be the smartest thing the Raiders did in a long time. I am not a professional scout but I think Kaepernick will have the best nfl career…..he can play.

  16. ttommytom says: Apr 28, 2011 1:01 PM

Now I know who the fastest QB at the Combine was.

  17. cappa662 says: Apr 28, 2011 1:05 PM

    Overrated.

  18. mray828 says: Apr 28, 2011 1:07 PM

When will Al Davis draft talent over athleticism? Athleticism doesn’t mean much if you don’t have heart, drive and determination to be good.

  19. arrogantathlete says: Apr 28, 2011 1:08 PM

I like how people compare him to Josh Freeman. Why because he’s half white? I think the guy has the best of both worlds.

  20. snowpea84 says: Apr 28, 2011 1:10 PM

They should go after Jamarcus Russel again.

  21. Matt Lechner says: Apr 28, 2011 1:13 PM

He’s on the rise because all the other QBs will be gone in the top 40. I don’t see him in the first round — http://bit.ly/NFLMockDraft9 — but second round is certainly a possiblity.

  22. lovesportsandsurfing says: Apr 28, 2011 1:32 PM

Clearly, the national media as well as the football fans not of the Raiders are in full on panic mode, what theyve feared for years has arrived,..the Raiders are back, and theres nothing they can do about it. Buckle up haters, what Oakland did to the West last year was just the beginning.

  23. buckybadger says: Apr 28, 2011 1:33 PM

Tired of these wild claims by Source. He is by far the worse journalist I have ever seen. All Source does is claim things that never come to fruition. His success rate is worse than Mock Drafts when they first come out. Remember when Bowers was the #1 pick?

I wouldn’t mind seeing Denver take him if he is there for the 2nd pick.

  24. jebdamone says: Apr 28, 2011 1:35 PM

    lol…of course its the raiders.
i can’t laugh too much because i have been very high on kaepernick for months now. just not high enough (haha) to consider him the #1 QB prospect.

  25. bass1717 says: Apr 28, 2011 1:36 PM

Several of these teams will regret reaching for these QB’s that are NOT 1st or even 2nd round talent. GM’s keep saying it’s a QB-driven league…..funny how the Jets get to the AFC Championship game every year with a MEDIOCRE QB. I understand the QB is the most important position on the team, but it doesn’t mean you should pass up much higher rated players with your first pick in order to take a much lower rated QB prospect.

  26. jebdamone says: Apr 28, 2011 1:37 PM

if mallett is not around at #43, i would be very happy if the vikings drafted him.

    Back from what?

    This year 30 of rebuilding?

Colin will be ruined if he goes to Outhouse Stadium.

  28. zeckwreck says: Apr 28, 2011 1:51 PM

With all the rumors that he’s high on the Seahawks board, I’ve been watching his highlights over the past week or so.

Honestly, he reminds me a lot of Aaron Rogers in his Cal days, but his stats are significantly more staggering from an outsider’s perspective. I understand that he’s a project, but given his character and athleticism (arm strength, speed, height), I’m now a believer. With the right situation, he will be a stud!

Please don’t go to a team that will start him too soon (looking at Vikings, Redskins, Bengals, Raiders, etc.). For him and Locker, I hope they don’t get rushed. Ask Jimmy Clausen how that’s turned out so far!

  29. lovesportsandsurfing says: Apr 28, 2011 1:58 PM

Minnesomania…please stop humiliating yourself,..we have multiple rings, you have none, and one was of course destroying your Vikes,..the NFL world is still waiting for the Vikings to win a superbowl…but let me clue you in,…it will never happen,…dont let your jealousy of our trophies ruin your life.

  30. vikescry1 says: Apr 28, 2011 1:59 PM

kapernicks just heard this news and said NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT OAKLAND!!!!!! anyone got a bullet?

  31. sports_dude says: Apr 28, 2011 2:00 PM

I think the bigger uproar should be why is this guy being drafted 15th overall? seriously? He played in a run first offense at a mid major school. If he goes before Mallett that will be a travesty.

  32. goodguyjohn says: Apr 28, 2011 2:13 PM

I see Kapernick making it in the NFL. He has great characterand, the intangible “will to win”, is exciting to watch and has a cannon for an arm. It’s no wonder the Raidah’s want him. “Just go deep baby!”

He wouldn’t mind playing inthe Bay Area either. His giant family lives in Turlock, just 60 minutes away

  33. CKL says: Apr 28, 2011 2:15 PM

I like CK and not just because of his initials ;).
He has a nice personality and he looks like he has all the tools to be good.
One thing that really impressed me is that Sports Science thing he did where he faced two guys jumping in his face (which simulates pass rush better than any other drill they put guys through) and he had this SICK amount of passes he got into the net regardless of where he was on their field. He was able to alter his motion/trajectory really well on the fly and be accurate. That skill/talent will come in very handy in the NFL as a QB seldom has ideal conditions to throw.

  34. jackfnburton says: Apr 28, 2011 2:29 PM

Well Duh. The Raiders are the only team in the division that absolutely MUST draft a QB.

qbs die? yeah that marino sucked, so did jim plunket, stabler, gannon, lamonaca,

also dont belive these writers, THEY HAVE NO SOURCES WHEN IT COMES TO THE RAIDERS, Thats been proven over and over again, They just throw something on the wall and hope it sticks and then say “see i tolu so”
like adam the raider hater schefter, he reported every other week cable would be fired for 2 years, and guess what he was never right cuse cable was never fired, his contract ws not re newed

Who said I was a Viking fan?

What do the Raiders and Vikings have in common?

They both will be in Los Angeles by 2013.

    Los Angeles Senors!!!!!!

I really don’t have an opinion on this article. I just wanted to say thanks for not using the stock Al Davis picture you’ve been posting on every Raiders story lately. After I showed him the article, my cubemate turned to stone this morning – lucky for me I wasn’t wearing the reading glasses today, so I’m OK. There is some burning in the one retina, though.

  39. coachglove says: Apr 28, 2011 3:25 PM

#1 Qb on the board does not = #1 player….

  40. mypuppyfarted says: Apr 28, 2011 3:32 PM

I love how the trained seals flap their fins together whenever another ridiculous, unsubstantiated rumor is reported as news. “As per a league source” is National Inquirer type of journalism. If you could give me a name of this “source” it might have some merit. Since I know you can’t give me the source I know it’s more crap.

Oh lord. The above statement by Raiderfan is EXACTLY why the previous statement is so true. Raiderfan lives in the past because the last 10 or so years have been terrible. You had to go all the way back to Stabler, Lamonica, and Ganon (trade)?????? Is the future of the Raiders that crapy that Raider fan has to relive the 70s and 80s?

  43. pftareraiderhaters says: Apr 28, 2011 4:08 PM

  44. thefiesty1 says: Apr 28, 2011 4:22 PM

Say it ain’t so. He deserves a better shot than the Raiders.

  45. layden18 says: Apr 28, 2011 5:12 PM

They need to wait tell next year to get a qb this kid is good but needs time plz raiders dont get him you guys r a few years away think team needs not whos the fastest player on the board.

  46. jgrange says: Apr 28, 2011 5:26 PM

#1 QB on their draft board because they know a few guys will not be around when they have their first pick in the draft which is in the 2nd round. Connect the dots, people.
