Kolb trade agreement rumors shot down

Phildelphia Eagles Mini Camp Getty Images

The Cardinals and 49ers didn’t draft a quarterback last night, causing some in the Philly media to “surmise” that perhaps the Eagles had a “wink and nod” agreement to trade Kevin Kolb to one of the teams.

The speculation in Philadelphia went like so: A team in the top ten chose a player the Eagles wanted, and the two sides would consummate the deal after the draft.

Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com has two league sources that say they have no plans in place whatsoever.

Really, what could the Eagles do?  Would the league possibly allow for a trade of Kolb for, say, Patrick Peterson after the draft?   There’s just no way that would fly.

The Eagles will open Kolb for bidding after the lockout really, truly ends.   They should be happy that the NFC West candidates to get him — Arizona, San Francisco, and Seattle — didn’t draft a quarterback in the first round Thursday.

oh boy is this another ESPN retraction???

  2. skoobyfl says: Apr 29, 2011 3:56 PM

    Look at all these rumors…

  3. jakek2 says: Apr 29, 2011 3:59 PM

    Why wouldn’t it fly?

  4. krow101 says: Apr 29, 2011 4:00 PM

The Eagles made a deal with New England. All their picks this year and next for Kolb.

    Ahhhhh sweet fanboy delusions.

  5. snowpea84 says: Apr 29, 2011 4:00 PM

Why would it not fly to trade Peterson for Kolb?
The Cardinals at that point coould not get Kolb. Objectively the best player available to the was Peterson, so they took him. Later Kolb became available, someone they perhaps value more but could not get before. Now they cen get him for Peterson.
In what way is that now ok?

  6. thereisalwaysnextyear says: Apr 29, 2011 4:01 PM

Look at how low that ball came out of Kolb’s hand in the picture above. Good luck getting that over a lineman’s head, much less their shoulders!

  7. dagnon13 says: Apr 29, 2011 4:01 PM

Please, if there is a God out there, do NOT let the 49ers trade for Kolb!

He is going to be worse than McNabb is / was in Washington, it’s all Reid making a mediocre QB look great.

I’d rather start Dalton or Mallet over Kolb.

  8. touchdownroddywhite says: Apr 29, 2011 4:01 PM

Still have tonight to go. I can’t see any of those teams getting a QB in the second AND picking up Kolb too – except maybe San Fran. Zona is bringing back John Skelton who would likely compete with an incoming rookie and Seattle has said that Whitehurst will have a chance at the starting gig so they would already have a 3 way competition at QB if they draft a QB tonight.

  9. wydok says: Apr 29, 2011 4:02 PM

That was just wishful thinking on the part of Eagles fans.

  10. waitingguilty says: Apr 29, 2011 4:05 PM

What am I missing here? Why would the league not allow a Kolb for Peterson trade?

  11. narutofan10 says: Apr 29, 2011 4:06 PM

is that even allowed i think between a pick made in the same draft but not picking a player for another team to trade for a vet

  12. bubbabart says: Apr 29, 2011 4:06 PM

    Kolb will equal stiff.

  13. hobartbaker says: Apr 29, 2011 4:07 PM

What has Kolb done to be worth a fourth round draft pick, much less a first round pick?

Nothing. He has averaged less than 3 TD passes per year in the NFL and 4 Int per year. Passer rating in the 70s. Losing record on a pretty good team.

  14. eaglesnoles05 says: Apr 29, 2011 4:13 PM

    Man, THAT would rule.

  15. tdk24 says: Apr 29, 2011 4:17 PM

9ers are dumb enough to pull that trade off. I don’t think the league could veto that. Also, Kolb = Scott Mitchell.

  16. southyank7 says: Apr 29, 2011 4:18 PM

GOODELL knows what the fans want… he knows what the players want… DOES he have a clue what the owners want? & by owners, I mean everyone but JERRY JONES…. If the lockour is “reinstated” oh what a PR nightmare for public enemy #1…

  17. ravensfan4life52 says: Apr 29, 2011 4:21 PM

Who cares? the only game that I have ever seen Kolb play in he was terrible. I don’t know why teams would even consider trading a first round pick for this guy. I would go after Alex Smith or Matt Leinart before I went after Kolb.

  18. vicktator says: Apr 29, 2011 4:21 PM

Roob the Boob literally never knows anything that goes on, he guaranteed the eagles wouldn’t take an o-lineman in the first round, this guy writes non-story after non-story hoping that something sticks, I’m not saying the eagles have a deal in place, but I am saying if they did, Reuben Frankly an idiot would have absolutely zero clue about it

  19. moseszd says: Apr 29, 2011 4:24 PM

Except Newton, there wasn’t a Top-20 QB available… Despite what Bud ‘can I change my name to Matt Millen’ Adams thinks…

So it wasn’t likely that one of the NFC West would take a QB when they drafted.

  20. laeaglefan says: Apr 29, 2011 4:25 PM

If the Eagles don’t get what they want for Kolb because of the lockout they should just hold on to him until some team’s QB gets injured and that team becomes desperate. Even if Kolb remains an Eagle for the entire 2011 season and pisses and moans about it, he’ll still try to play his best when called upon, since he’ll be a free agent after the 2011 season.

  21. brownsfn says: Apr 29, 2011 4:29 PM

This dude isn’t that good…why does everybody insist he is worth a top 10 pick!?!?!?!?! Please explain this to me…PLEASE…

  22. gtmann says: Apr 29, 2011 4:31 PM

The Eagles would be crazy to trade Kolb . We own him cheap (1.4 mil) . And with Vick’s style of play he is bound to get hurt . Plus I saw him regressing to his old Atlanta self late in the season .That pick to close the GB game was just STUPID ! It was 1st down , 33 sec on the clock , and he had Macklin wide open down the middle !!! When Vick goes down , or goes into meltdown , do you really want to hand the keys to Kafka who has NEVER taken a snap in a regular season game ?!!!

  23. birdobeamen says: Apr 29, 2011 4:32 PM

The NFL can do NOTHING about it if it happens.

In all reality, the two teams didn’t even need to talk. The Cardinals KNOW the Eagles want/need a cornerback. If they selected the best DB in the draft, and then package him up in a bundle and offer it for Kolb — what can the NFL do?

    Not a damn thing.

  24. 1bigtex says: Apr 29, 2011 4:33 PM

Let’s see, Kolb has four years in the league, a losing record as a starter, more INTs than TDs, barely 2000 yards passing, a mediocre QB rating and yet, we’re supposed to believe that someone is going to give a top 10 pick for him? Really? Wow, that medical marijuana must be some really, really good stuff for someone to buy that crap.

  25. myeaglescantwin says: Apr 29, 2011 4:34 PM

I havent liked Kolb since last season when he tried to pick up my girl.. while he was engaged…

+ dude cant throw more than 50 yards. or feel a blind side blitz..
trade this clown for whatever we can get.

(oh & she played him out. even after he dropped the “i’m getting ten million dollars this year, whats he gettin.” she said “me you conceited D!cK”)

  26. clayjayhawk says: Apr 29, 2011 4:36 PM

They should trade him to the Vikings so he can play hopscotch with Jared Allen.

  27. knightringonow says: Apr 29, 2011 4:44 PM

You mean Derek Anderson has lost his job? Wow. Even Terry Hanratty got to carry around a clipboard for like 5 years.

Wiz: how much worse could leinart have been?

  28. paredskinwarrior says: Apr 29, 2011 4:45 PM

kolb sucks he isn’t worth a 4th rd pick let alone sumone on petersons level! Lol their is a reason vick kept the starting job!if kolb was worth shat the eagles wouldn’t let him go

  29. azbroncos says: Apr 29, 2011 4:47 PM

The NFL has single handedly screwed the Eagles! LOL Good luck getting that 2012 draft pick that might not even exist next year!

  30. nygdefenserules says: Apr 29, 2011 4:48 PM

    Vikings didn’t choose a quarterback either…..

    :o/

    Well, not a good one…..

  31. stevo8drum says: Apr 29, 2011 4:52 PM

we need a CB…. please…. somone offer us a proven CB for Kolb. Please. Please get this done. Please. Mr Goodell…. you killed us with the no trade thing. Killed us.

  32. stylinandprofilin says: Apr 29, 2011 4:54 PM

Once the trading process begins, look for the cardinals to trade Patrick Peterson for Kevin kolb.

  33. fullerman says: Apr 29, 2011 5:02 PM

this guy sucks…I wouldnt trade nothing higher than 3rd round…If he was so great Andy wouldnt have benched him for Michael V…He doesnt show leadership skills and i dont think his arm is great….this guy is going to get his GM FIRED!!

  34. tjacks7 says: Apr 29, 2011 5:25 PM

Really? Not every team reaches for quarterbacks in the 1st round? You only get an opportunity to take a swing at a young quarterback every once in a while, might as well reach.

As a viking fan, I can honestly say it looks like the vikes dumped one of the leagues worst coaches and picked up another one.

  35. birdobeamen says: Apr 29, 2011 5:34 PM

Hey fullerman — with the exception of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers — EVERY QB in the NFL would have been benched for Michael Vick this past season.

  36. oldbyrd says: Apr 29, 2011 5:36 PM

Whats the difference what any team does after the lock out is over. Why can’t the Eagles trade Kolb to whom ever they want/? Someone explain this to me. Because where do you draw the line on what any team decides to do. How do you prove that it was planned? Sounds weird to me

  37. oldbyrd says: Apr 29, 2011 5:38 PM

Whom ever says to Andy ” I bid Patrick Peterson for Kolb”Andy says done deal. Where am I going wrong?

I heard that he hunted pigs in the off season

  39. puntpasskick says: Apr 29, 2011 5:52 PM

The rumor that was tossed around last night was Kolb to SF for Justin Smith and draft picks…

    Peterson will stay in ARI…

  40. melonnhead says: Apr 29, 2011 5:58 PM

    —————————————————-

Void the trade, like they did with the 49ers/Ravens regarding TO. Duh. Why do you think that they couldn’t?

  41. rugdaniels says: Apr 29, 2011 6:35 PM

It’s the same every off season. The Eagles will get a top 5 pick for one of their players or the top free agent is dying to join the Eagles. Yet every September it’s the same old players with the same old results. The only place the Eagles every win is in their fan’s minds.
