Shocker: Raiders take fastest player in the draft

Demarcus Van Dyke, DeAndre Hopkins AP

We love the reliability of the Raiders.

Miami cornerback Demarcus Van Dyke ran the fastest forty yard dash at the Combine, and immediately people started to joke that he’ll get taken by the Raiders.   Friday evening, he got taken by the Raiders No. 81 overall.

Van Dyke wasn’t a starter at Miami last year, but we’re not going to kill the pick.  (That’s Silva job.)  After all, Jacoby Ford was a similar speedster pick last year and that worked out rather well.

Man, the Oakland professional track team is shaping up real well.

I guess the only surprise here is that they didn’t trade up into the 1st round to take him.

Never saw this coming in a million years #sarcasm

According to Ricky Bobby’s dad its only the fastest that get …. well Al can fill in the rest

He out played the other corner on the team that was taken by the Texans much earlier. You want corners?, no team in NFL History has produced or stolen (ie: from Pats Mike Haynes) Then the Raiders. Have you people cleared the %^&* out of your eyes from having your heads so far up Nnamdi’s rear yet. Raiders corner that will be with Raiders next year as well.

Hey what was with the Pats Drafting a Mayock rated 7th rounder in round 3? Burgess Trade was great and the Solder for Seymour deal was wild, I make that trade any day of the week lol.

But of course they will leave out that he’s 6’3 179 pounds … all he needs is a good strenghtening coach this off season and we’re good.

And guess who his coach is?… Superbowl champ and Hall Of Famer Rod Woodson.

Keep Laughing NFL Network, and yes J. Ford in the 3rd last year also with the fastest time workout GREAT!!

    Thank You Patriots…

    Go RAIDERS!!!!

As a Chiefs fan, I just hope Al keeps making all the important playa decisions!

Well, you can’t really question a corner back chosen by the Raiders. After all they have the best track record as far as drafting stud corners.

Lester Hayes, Mike Hanes, Charles Woodson, Nnamdi Asomugha, Stanford Routt and hopefully Van Dyke.

And I remember people saying the same thing about Nnamdi when he was drafted. Saying he was a reach and he was drafted off of speed. that he was a fast safety. Funny thing is he was converted into a corner and is arguably the best in the biz.

  9. luponatrix says: Apr 29, 2011 10:49 PM

Anybody who can run faster than the rate at which Al Davis is dying is an impressive athlete, to be sure.

“Van Dyke wasn’t a starter at Miami last year, but we’re not going to kill the pick.”

What does his ability to start on a college team have to do with anything? We’re talking about the Raiders here.

The real question is….would he start in the CFL? Because if the answer is “I don’t know….maybe” then he can start for the Raiders.

  11. 7pints says: Apr 29, 2011 10:57 PM

Where’s all the Raiduh fans claiming this was a great pick, just like Stefen Wisniewski??? I am collecting money for the keep Al Davis alive for eternity fund if anyone is interested.

  12. 52sackmachine says: Apr 29, 2011 11:13 PM

Being fast is one thing, being able to tackle big strong recievers is another. I see tackling as this kids weakness. I can envision Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, carrying this guy into the endzone. Oakland a bad team, they just don’t draft very well.

  13. GG Eden says: Apr 29, 2011 11:25 PM

Tho not a spectacular draft by the Raiders so far, it’s been very solid. OL, OL, CB addressing needs. Don’t forget Rod Woodson is new DBs coach, so no one knows that the Van Dyke pick is bad or lol-worthy.

  14. swervinmervin says: Apr 29, 2011 11:31 PM

To be fair to the Raiders – Kiper had Van Dyke rated higher than the other Miami CB who went a few picks earlier.

    Just sayin…

  15. jstiffler21550 says: Apr 29, 2011 11:47 PM

Everyone always jokes about the raiders drafting speed. But think about this. We play with a single high safety. So if you are not faster than the other teams wide receivers, how much easier is it going to be to get beat deep. So laugh all you want but they have to draft for their system.

  16. ratbastardshanahandjob says: Apr 30, 2011 12:32 AM

Another horrid wasted pick from our Clueless GM/head of scouting/head of player personell/owners box DC “Coach” Davis. Is it any wonder the Raiders have been a failure the last quarter century (7 count em 7 winning seasons)….

Van holes in the Dyke didnt even start last year. He was drafted for one reason hes fast. It ought to be good comedy haveing Van Dyke guard dhBUST in camp. A really fast CB who cant cover vs a really fast WR who cant get open or catch. The only way it could get any better was if “Coach” Davis “great playaaa” JaMarcus was launching passes ovah both their heads…..

A poster mentioned the Raider track team. Van Dyke will replace dhBUST on the relay 4 X 100 team. Hes drops the baton to often….

  17. timegambit says: Apr 30, 2011 12:44 AM

I wanted to watch, but was afraid they would show a close-up of Al Davis and I’m still having nightmares from seeing him last year.

Serious nightmares; the type where you sh*t the bed.

  18. norcalraider510 says: Apr 30, 2011 12:49 AM

Demarcus Van Dyke could be a beast. if he goes to the weight room and gets bigger he could be great. oh and did i mention that Rod Woodson(HOF) and Wille Brown(HOF) are going to be coaching him?

  19. souldogdave says: Apr 30, 2011 12:50 AM

You laugh at the Raiders. But when we come to your house, you will be AFRAID.

  20. pftareraiderhaters says: Apr 30, 2011 12:53 AM

yep and you guys ripped on the raiders picks’ last year at this time as well

  21. rcali says: Apr 30, 2011 1:09 AM

Hey, when Al Davis was alive, he had a really good football mind.

  22. ratbastardshanahandjob says: Apr 30, 2011 2:27 AM

I think the Raider minister of (DIS)information must have registered under several screen names…

I know fans of other teams are happy Al stupidly drafted Van Dyke. But how can any fan that isnt a blind homer think he was a good pick?? If this was another AFC West team that drafted this stiff in round 3 we would be laughing. The guy couldnt even start. The only thing he does well is run fast . Havent we had enough of those playaaaa’s?? To make things worse. Because Al had to have his fast guy hes wastes the 3rd rounder that should have been used on the LSU RT. Because of that we lose a 2nd next year…..

The Raider draft last year wasnt “ripped”. It was said to be a good draft by almost everyone. The difference between J. Ford and Van Dyke (and a dhBUST). Ford could actually play football and wasnt just another fast guy who can just run fast in a straight line…..

(sarcasm) I cant wait until this season to see the joke of a DC Bresnahan run Als antique-vanilla-no blitz S-safety deep man to man D. Especially with Aso being as good as gone…..

undefeated in the division, but we dont draft very well *eyes roll* 2nd leading team in overall sacks, but we dont draft very well, scored the most points of the season, 59, but we dont draft very well…

    Hate on…

    Great pick…in the 6th round.

The Raiders have been turning late round talent into early round picks for so long they just can’t help themselves.

Mike Haynes was drafted by the Patriots in ’76, and never played a down for the Raiders until ’83. Great player – just not one to be counted as a Raider draftee, any more than Charles Woodson could be considered a Packer draftee now.

I remembered early 208 mock us taking ryan mallet fist overall in this years draft. Shocking that al past on mallet. Maybe hell make a trade for mallet 3 years from now and give the pat our next 10 first rounder.

  29. thetwilightsown says: Apr 30, 2011 6:29 AM

Hate the Van Dyke pick for the same reason I hated taking Routt (and STILL don’t think he was worth all that money) but I do love seeing Chargeless, Chef and Donk fans attempting to talk trash after last year, when you guys got your asses kicked all over the field by the Team With The Creepy Old Owner. So there’s that, too.

To be fair to the bloggers, Mel Kiper has the IQ of a mini M&M.

  32. mypuppyfarted says: Apr 30, 2011 9:10 AM

All retarded haters can rag on this all they want the fact remains; you can’t teach speed. The Raiders approach has always been to take guys with great physical skills and teach them to play their positions. I would have thought all the Raiders in the Hall Of Fame would have taught you idiots that by now.

  33. huejackson says: Apr 30, 2011 9:35 AM

Van Dyke is the most talented NFL ready CB in the draft…
This website also laughed at the raiders when they picked Asomough…..
All raiders do is pick stars. Just look at the reality of it. They had one bad pick Jmaarcus russell, which any team would of picked him nmber 1

  34. handsatlanta says: Apr 30, 2011 11:18 AM

I’ve been a Miami Hurricanes season ticket holder since before the Civil War and I love me my Canes but sorry, Raider Fan. Van Dyke won’t even make the team.

  35. tdk24 says: Apr 30, 2011 11:26 AM

So the Raiders took a project player. Big deal, all teams do it. There are 250 some kids that get drafted every year, they don’t all pan out. Lot’s get cut in training camp. Besides, what are all of you going to talk about after the season when the Raiders don’t have a first round bust!

    Ponder, LMFAO!

  36. 1bigtex says: May 3, 2011 6:45 PM

    @huejackson

Uh dude, regarding that “They had one bad pick” comment; Fabian Washington, Phillip Buchanon, Robrt Gallery, Jamarcus Russell, DHB. It might just be me, but I see more than one bad pick. Here’s a quick question; how many top 10 picks has Al had in the last decade? Now, how many of them made the Pro Bowl? When you pick consistently in the top 10, shouldn’t you at least get a few Pro Bowlers?
Van Dyke is a skinny track guy. Whether or not he becomes an NFL CB remains to be seen, but he looks like a major reach in the middle of the third round.
