After a quarterback-free fourth round in the NFL draft, another passer has gone off the board early in the fifth.

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Iowa’s Ricky Stanzi with the fourth pick in the fifth round, No. 135 overall.

Most projections had Stanzi going higher than the fifth round, and some forecasts had him going as high as late in the second. Stanzi isn’t a great athlete, but he is a 6-foot-4 pocket passer with the prototypical pro-style fundamentals.

Many observers think Stanzi is more prepared to run an NFL offense than some of the quarterbacks chosen ahead of him, but that he lacks the upside potential of the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft. The Chiefs think his potential is sufficient that he’s a good deal in the fifth round.
