APEarlier today, Rosenthal siphoned a little PFT traffic for the NBCSports.com draft grades. Some of you have concluded that these are the official PFT draft grades.
They’re not.
We shall now unveil the official PFT draft grades.
Incomplete, for every team.
We (or at least I) say it every year at this time. There’s no way of knowing who had a good draft or a bad draft until we find out whether the draft picks become great players — and whether the players presumed to be great become busts. Of course, that doesn’t stop folks (like Rosenthal and Silva) from feeling compelled to apply a meaningless letter grade months before the answer key to the test has been determined.
We don’t blame them for it. As long as fans will read columns regarding draft grades, folks will keep writing them.
Folks other than me, that is.
I thinks it’s more about potential and hope to have a better team.
The numbers are always something more solid to look at. If we were not so crazy about statistcs, these grades will not have any relevance at all.
Well played Mike.
Keep that little weasel in his place. Maybe you should send him for coffee tomorrow morning, or hire an intern to edit his posts.
Excellent display of management skill . . .
You got me there! Couldn’t agree more, though. Post in 2-3 years.
Kind of a cop-out, giving your opinion is perfectly fine.
Grades at this juncture are opinions, there is nothing wrong with that. It doesn’t make them meaningless, in my opinion. If you deleted every post on this site that contained opinions, there would be very little left.
Perhaps you could give us the link?
New England Patriots B+? Try C+. Belichick seems fixated with drafting defensive backs at the expense of his front-seven. That’s baffling. Moreover, his drafting methodology too often emphasizes “value” over “need.” Once in a great while, a head coach should draft based on need, as in the case of a team with a virtually non-existent pass rush.
In 1974, most people thought the Steelers drafted only one good player – Swann – and that most of the rest would be lucky to make the roster. 37 years later, it’s considered the best draft in history.
Far too many fans don’t seem to comprehend how unique this year’s draft is..
Usually it’s the last piece of the team puzzle, after initial free agency and trades… usually picks can be traded for veteran players…
This year everything’s opposite. Yet some fans just don’t seem to get that.
All of this has created a significant degree of chaos in the offseason – and that’s going to affect some teams VERY adversely and I don’t think too many comprehend that just yet.
What’s clear is the impasse has dramatically affected the 2011 season already, and its only going to get worse.
You are right on giving everyone an incomplete. Absolutely the dumbest thing going is the draft grades or “winners-losers” crapola. All these do is show the draftnik writers biases against the actual picks. Hello. None of the writers have the slightest idea how the draft will turn out. It’s a crapshoot, everyone involved knows that. Three years from now you can do a accurate winners-losers column on this draft. And by the way, remember how three years ago everyone said Jerry West and the Memphis NBA team had their head you-know-where when they traded Pau Gasol to the Lakers for brother Mark and draft choices? How’s that look now, stooges? Same with the NFL draft.
HaHa!! That’s the best column on draft grades I’ve ever read! And certainly the most accurate!
Green Bay didn’t do too bad either picking 32 and last in most of the rounds.
Falcons =F Saints =B Panthers =F Bucs =B
Cowboys =D Eagles =C Giants =B Redskins=C
Bears =F Vikings =F Packers =C Lions =A
Cards =B 49ers =C Seahawks =F Rams =D
Chargers =C Raiders =F Broncos =D Chiefs =A
Ravens =A Steelers =C Bengals=A Browns =A
Pats =C Jets =F Bills=A Dolphins =F
Titans =C Colts =D Texans =A Jags =C
You cant honestly say the Browns didn’t have a heck of a draft. One doesn’t need to wait 3 years to see that they did a great job.
Then why don’t you do a column grading drafts from 3 years ago? That’d be cool.
An NFL draft is like a royal wedding. You have to wait a few years to know whether or not it’s a good one. (Also, you can rest assured I didn’t watch it.)
How about doing a draft evaluation for each team from three years ago then since you should be able to fairly rate them now? Make it your new annual PFT special.
Funny how PFT always makes such a big deal about their disdain for post-draft grades, like they’re taking some kind of moral high-ground, yet they put so much effort into their preseason power rankings. How are those any more meaningful than pre-draft grades?
@iamtalking ….
Hmmm … you graded every team in the AFC North an A except the Steelers. They got a C.
Gee … that was subtle.
With all the talk about BPA, it seems to me that almost all the teams drafted mostly for need. The Giants did BPA. Who else?
Is this why Rosenthal called you a wuss?
Why don’t you give us a grade on the 2008 draft?
Total Viking fan here, but in spite of my bias, am I the only one who thinks the Packers draft is highly over rated? I love Sherrod as a #1, but Cobb played on an SEC team that chucked it around while playing from behind. And the Green kid from Hawaii wasn’t considered a physical RB in the WAC, and he’s going to be productive in the NFC North? Not to mention they didn’t draft an olb, which totally puts their pass rush in the hands of Frank Zombo if #52 ever goes down. And no, I won’t say the Vikings draft was any better.

Don’t ever procreate, this world is full to the rim with people like you who THINK they know drafting. Don’t add to it.
What do we really know? What don’t we know? All we ever know is what we are sold. We don’t know if a car crash was a good thing or not even. We can say, wow it sucks that I crashed my car, but what if the car crash delayed my day an hour and the quickpick lottery ticket I bought an hour later, instead or an hour earlier like I would have without said car crash, turned out to be a 320 million dollar powerball winner while some other schmoe got the #’s I would’ve gotten earlier. Well then, after evaluation and time, i can see that the car crash was the greatest and most fortuitous event in my life. However, everyone at the time would have said, “Man, it sucks to crash your car.” And I wouldn’t have a stupid argument for them… ahem…
Just let your people grade the friggin’ draft based on what teams were able to do and projections. Yes, smarty, we know you don’t “know” what’s gonna happen. If A team would’ve nabbed Fairley, Gabbert, Green, Peterson and 2 or 3 of the top lineman by moving only low picks and aging vets in trades, we still wouldn’t “know” whether or not their draft was good. But I think we could give them an “A” and not comment on the fact that no one knows the furure, as in the case in any situation.
Watch this-
Eagles are gonna win the next superbowl.
No they aren’t.
Shutup, you don’t “know” they aren’t.
Well you don’t know they are.
We’ll have to wait and see.
Yep.
Wow. gripping analysis.

He/she may not be too far off with the AFC north grades, although I’d have given both the Steelers and Ravens B’s.
Well, how about grading the 2008 or 2009 drafts for us then?
“We (or at least I) say it every year at this time. There’s no way of knowing who had a good draft or a bad draft until we find out whether the draft picks become great players…”
WRONG.
We certainly can grade the draft based on what we know right now. Just because we will have more information in the future, does not mean we cannot make judgments based on our current knowledge.
For example, suppose the Panthers had taken Cheta Ozougwu (Mr. Irrelevant) with the #1 pick overall? Then proceeded to take Chris Neild (253 overall) etc in subsequent rounds. Are you really saying that you would have to wait 3 years to grade the Panthers draft as an F minus?
In that example it is easy to grade the draft, and obviously it is more difficult to grade the actual draft. But saying something is difficult is not the same thing as saying it can’t or shouldn’t be done.
The truth is that anyone who claims the draft “can’t” be graded right now is simply a coward and too afraid to stand behind their judgment and assesment of the players and teams.
Lighten up Francis. All the post draft stuff is in fun. Ohh.. look at me, I’m a rebel, I’m going to say everyone is incomplete.
Grades aren’t a reflection of the players, they are a reflection of how well a team did with what they had and how they filled holes on their team and what value they got with their picks. If a team drafted 7 punters, you can pretty much mark it up as a F. If a team managed to trade a 6th and a 7th rounder for 2 top 10 picks.. ya, pretty much a A+.
@stuartscottslefteye …
I love your name
Aww, I’m just ragging him ’cause he hates the Steelers.
Cop out
Thanks Mr. Fun Dude. Should I get off your lawn, too?
