you said to me:

"In the same instance that you ask us not to politicize the event, you slam President Bush. "

Where is the slam? dryzzt23 posted a comment thanking President Bush for the operation that killed Bin Laden last night. I simply pointed out that Bush is no longer President. He hasn't been President for over 2 years. I was just pointing that out. It seemed to me like dryzzt23 was intentionally excluding our current administration from any praise. You and I seem to agree that Obama deserves praise too. I never meant to deny former President Bush any credit for his role in the operation. I recognize that we have been trying to get this guy for almost 10 years (really almost 15 yars if you count the time Clinton tried to kill him in 97.) I know, better than most, what teamwork it takes to achieve a goal like this. I think most of the praise needs to go to the men and women in the military and intelligence community, as I said in my earlier comment.

As I said, nothing in my comment disparaged President Bush. I was disparaging dryzzt23 for excluding the man who actually sent the order to proceed. It seemed political to me. And that seems unbecoming on a day like this.

As I said earlier, this is a great day for all Americans. No politics here.

You minimalize the lives lost and all of the sacrifices that have been made over the last 10 years to even hint that football is of any importance relative to the terrorist acts of a madman and decade long fight to bring him to justice. As a loyal reader, please, reconsider your position in this post.

"You realize that Bush is not president anymore? I give credit to everybody that played a role in the killing of this wretched excuse for a human being. And I challenge everybody to see if they can actually refrain from politicizing this event. This is a great day for all Americans. Great job Navy SEALs."

In the same instance that you ask us not to politicize the event, you slam President Bush. This specific operation dates back 5 years, which if you do the math was during Bush's presidency. It dates back to information gathered in the 06 interrogations, so it's not wrong for anyone to thank our previous president who was so dedicated to the cause of capturing Bin Laden. Obama continued what Bush started, so it's perfectly appropriate to thank both of them. Obama handled the operation greatly, and Bush handed off that operation to Obama. Overall, it is probably those who work intelligence and that outstanding Seal team who deserve most of our praise and thanks, but I don't feel it was fair of you or anyone else to exclude President Bush.

schwartzslaw says: May 2, 2011 10:51 AM
Come September 11, 2011 the lack of football will in no way diminish the emotion, importance or depth of our remembrance. But the NFL will be diminished if, because of greed, they’re not there to play their small role on that day we honor the fallen, and celebrate the best of America.

I agree with your whole post.

At the time Sept 11 happened I was glad that they canceled football for the weekend and thought it proper to do so... But when football returned it was a great diversion and turned very patriotic that day. I still remember the images of NYFD on the field and the crowds going crazy. It a way football brought the country together in a very somber time. It did show that we were and are resilient as a nation.

Thank you for your post. Well said!

"UPDATE: ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, a U.S. Navy veteran, sent an e-mail on this topic to ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike in the Morning, which they read on the air. “Now that bin Laden is dead, the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is going to be a day of somber national reflection,” Paolantonio sad. “The NFL better make sure there is football that day. Empty stadiums on that day now will be an unsettling example of greed and selfishness.”

Just because ESPN says it does not justify why this topic would be brought up in the first place. For 90% of Americans, the LAST thing on their mind on 9/11 is football. Shame on you reporters for trying to make a story.

Sports are a part of American culture. Can anyone doubt the power of the crowd chanting USA in last nights Mets-Phillies game? One of the first things I wanted to do when I returned from my tour in Iraq was to go to a baseball game. I still get choked up watching the Piazza game after 9-11. We were attacked, but we prevailed and carried on. The return to playing sports after 9-11 was a symbol of American resiliency.

The NFL is tangentially tied to the events of September 11. Lets not forget that on Monday September 10 the Giants played in Denver on a Monday night game. There are people that were not in their offices in the World Trade Center that morning because they had stayed up late to watch the game or had travelled to Denver to see the game. Tell those people that football has nothing to do with September 11.

Linking this event to the Labor dispute is like comparing Apples to A-holes. It's just a shame that De Smith, the NFLPA, and the League officials weren't haniging out in Bin Ladens house when Sh*t hit the fan, That apparently is what it's going to take to get this debacle finally resolved. GO FANS! AND THANK YOU, U.S. SERVICEMEN / WOMEN!

As much as it pains me to say that.

Couldn't you just make an off topic post about Osama's death without insulting everyone's intelligence? His death has nothing to do with Football. Get real, dude.
