Leslie Frazier wants Christian Ponder to start Week One

Vikings Draft Football AP

About those rumors of the Vikings still being in the market for a veteran like Donovan McNabb?  Though a lockout that wipes out all of the offseason and training camp and the preseason could make a move for a game-ready veteran quarterback necessary, coach Leslie Frazier’s preference would be to immediately rely on Christian Ponder, the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft.

“Ideally, I’d like for him to be ready to go when we play San Diego [in Week One],” Frazier said during a segment with 1500 ESPN Twin Cities.  “That would be the ideal situation — we’ve got our Matt Ryan, we’ve got our [Joe] Flacco, we’ve got our [Mark] Sanchez right here.  But because of the uncertainty of the offseason, it’s just hard to determine exactly how you want to approach it.  So, we need a little more clarity on what this offseason’s going to be like.”

And so the status of the Minnesota starting quarterback will depend in large part on the viability of the court ruling from the federal district of Minnesota.

“It would be tough to be able to send him out there against San Diego if we don’t start football, if we don’t report until, say, mid-August, or three weeks prior to the season,” Frazier said.  “That would be a tough, tough deal for any young quarterback.  It’s tough enough just getting through OTAs and preseason games, but if we start this thing without preseason games or one preseason game, I think you have to rethink how you approach it.  So, that’ll probably answer what direction we go — based on when we start football.”

The fact that Frazier is willing to openly say that Ponder ideally would start the season represents the next step in the play-’em-right-away evolution of drafting quarterbacks in round one.  Even for rookie quarterbacks drafted since 2008 who have started in Week One, they weren’t handed the reins only days after being picked.

Ponder will — if the lockout ends in time for the Vikings to get him ready.

The process began on Friday.  Per Tom Pelissero of 1500espn.com, Ponder met with offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson on Friday, before the lockout was reinstated.  Ponder also spoke with receiver Percy Harvin, who will be Ponder’s lockout conduit with veteran players.  Ponder and Percy could be organizing lockout workouts in Florida, if the lockout lingers beyond the appeals court’s looming decision regarding whether it should continue.

If Ponder can a game manager and not make too many mistakes, which is about all the potential he has, he’s got a chance at being the third best QB in that division, until Stafford gets healed up and ready to go.

If that is the case, Mike Tice better roll up his sleeves and get that o-line ready — so Ponder is not running for his life.

    Pervy,

So by “great” do you mean in over his head, drafted 50 picks too high and crumbles under the pressure of being picked by the biggest joke franchise in the NFL?

    I hear you man…he will be great…..

Oh, and did you see the Patriots selected the real steal of the draft, Ryan Mallet, in the 3rd round with….wait for it Pervy…..the pick the Vikings gave up to obtain Randy Moss. I wonder who got the better end of the deal on that one? Again, biggest joke franchise in the NFL.

Their second round pick is better than their first. Not a good way to get the Leslie Frazier era rolling. Absolutely no value with that pick. Can’t wait to watch Fairley (the guy they should have taken) sack the glass boy. REACH

  13. wyofootballfan says: May 2, 2011 10:45 AM

Why is it everyone bashing this pick? they got the guy they wanted. So what if they got him 12th, Locker went before that and he sucks in the pocket. Noboody wanted to trade down with the vikes. They got the most accurate passer in this years draft. Look at Newton, hes a bust because he has had 1 year of collegiate level playing time, came from a system and plus his mechanics are off. Gabbert is ok, hes just a signal caller that everyone thought is gonna be great. Mallett is a joke, all he has is a strong arm and little accuracy, strong arms get qbs in trouble in the NFL. Ponder comes from a pro style offense, not a pistol package or shotgun. He has had conistant success unlike Newton who is a one year wonder. Ya they should have traded back but they didnt and its not from their lack of trying

  14. jbcommonsense says: May 2, 2011 10:55 AM

The word ”ideally” there means Coach Frazier can do whatever he wants. Ponder may start opening day, or he may not start until 2012.

    ————————————————–
Yup, the same Vikings offense that couldn’t score with a hall of fame QB at the helm? Pervy, you better worry about keeping Ponder upright, seeing as though your O-Line is a sieve and got the greatest iron man QB ever, killed last year.

But, you can rest easy, becasue next year you will be able to draft Luck with the first overall pick. Then you will have your QB.

    wyofootballfan says: May 2, 2011 10:45 AM

Why is it everyone bashing this pick?

Why? Because it is called “Viking Envy” which is eerily similar to another “envy” that Freud came up with involving the nether regions of our male bodies. You see, no matter what others teams do, for example recently win the Super Bowl, their fans cannot help themselves in looking over the fence to see what we are doing. How many true Viking fans care what GB, Chicago, or Detroit does? Certainly not I because I care about my Vikings and not much else in the NFL. When you are confident in yourself, you don’t have to worry or bash others. Another Freudian defense mechanism…projection.

  18. pervyharvin says: May 2, 2011 12:01 PM

@ spawn Dilfer……We just drafted Mallet’s number one beast of a lineman, Love. We got a hulking center Fusco who some analysts say can be like Matt Birk. Free agency also is where I see the Vikings active as well. Not to mention Ponder is pretty darn elusive compared to Favre. How about you just worry about not choking too hard after a chumpionship year.

  19. kulserd says: May 2, 2011 12:40 PM

I’m just gonna throw this out there… since Rick Spielman took over the reigns as the Vice President of Player personnel of the Vikings on May 30th, 2006 he has had 2 first round draft picks, with those two picks, both of which weren’t gimme picks he took Adrian Peterson (Rookie Of The Year) and Percy Harvin (Rookie Of The Year).

Last I checked he has a pretty good track record in the draft… how about instead of listening to all the douchers on ESPN and their “takes” you look at the facts… Spielman is a good judge of first round talent.

So are you saying that Pervy and Contra are not “true” Vikings fans? They are the first to post rebuttles whenever a Packer fan posts something.

Pervy, I would rather “choke” after winning a Superbowl title than to be the fan of a team that has never had the opportunity to “choke” after a Superbowl victory.

Keep trying to tell yourself that things will be different……we will soon see footage of Favre throwing to high schoolers and pictures of Vikings fans putting up billboards to urge him to come back to thier pathetic team. Or are you going to put up billboards in McNabb’s home town to ask him to come to your team? Carson Palmer….????? Can’t wait for the circus to start in Minny in 2011…….

Hey Pervy…weren’t you the one that said first Favre, then Moss at Mid season were taking you guys to the Superbowl. Ponder couldn’t even make it through the season in college…two games against Peppers, two games against Matthews, two games against Suh and wow………teams. You have two bad tackles that can’t pass or Run block and your D is all on the wrong side of 30….

  25. shaggytoodle says: May 2, 2011 1:45 PM

The only thing Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Sanchez and Ponder have in common was they were drafted in the first round.

From what I have read most places Ponder was going to be a 2nd round pick, but picking where the Vikings were, its tough to move, because a lot of the ELITE potential players are get a trade done, and they couldn’t be sure he would be there in the 2nd. I think the Vikings could have picked someone else like Mallet in the second round, but in my opinion Mallet wouldn’t develop good going to Minny. I wouldn’t want him on my team either.

I think its a reach to take Ponder just like I believe it a reach to spend a 1st round pick on a slot WR/KR like Harvin especially if you include his condition of headaches. You can probably find just as effective ones in the 2nd round like a Randall Cobb out of Kentucky.

With the aid of Favre/Moss/Chilly the Vikes may have just sent the Vikings back a total of 6-8 years insatead of 3-5.

Keep talking chumpion. We did get some line help. Also got a tight end big enough to eat Matthews. Vikings will be playing a controlled style of smash mouth football. Two tight end sets, lots of running, quick passes and Ponder has mobility. Like when they move to L.A.?

I do agree with youthe Vikings are @ the best when they try running the ball, but they choose to take a two year hiatus on it and let Favre take over. RBs have short careers. If you don’t believe me ask Detroit they seem to trade back into the first round for one every 5 years.

No offense to Pervy, but everytime someone says something boneheaded like, “I have done the research” or “I guarantee so and so will be great” or “he was picked too high because the mock draft said so”, he or she loses all credibility. Look, you’re not an expert. If you were, you’d be making football decisions for a team or be talking on a sports show. Therefore, you can’t guarantee ANYTHING.

I was surprised by the Ponder pick but after learning about this guy I’m really optimistic about him. The big knock against him seems to be that he’s had a lot of injuries, but that was the knock against Adrian Peterson too. By the way, Aaron Rodgers kept getting injured in practice his first three years. The other knock is that he doesn’t have a strong arm but that is explained by his arm injury. During the workouts, he’s been able to make all the throws as well as anybody. Sounds like Packer fans are a little nervous.

    ————————————————-

You had valid points up until here. But let me explain facts to you…..

With the exception of the 3.6 Taylor posted in 2009, you have to go back to 2005 to find a non-QB with at least 20 carries who averaged less than 4 ypc for the Vikings. That is a credit to the OL. I won’t argue with the pass protection part, but they can run block.

The vikings have 3 starters over 30 (4 if Leber returns), the same number as the Packers have. Try again…..

It’s so inconvenient when facts cloud the opinions of Packers fans, isn’t it?

Ponder would have been gone at 14 or 16. Not a far reach at 12. We are talking about pro scouts here, not part time college football fans that pretend they know what their talking about because they studied 15 mock drafts. I wonder what most of you said last year about Clausen. I’m sure most of you mocked him somewhere in the first 20 picks. bash on clowns. Really? Is that why the state legislature is trying to circumvent a public vote on the matter to get the stadium funded? I think maybe the “fans” are saying something other than yes. With a deficit as big as Wisconsin’s, a $800 million stadium will be hard to swallow for the residents.
