Cecil should have been like those other parents and coaches who just wait for the school’s real agent to come and offer him money. That seems to be more acceptable. Especially if the school is a on the ESPN list of favorite vendors.

That means the who off-season/training camp/pre-season process is going to be shortened leaving UFAs with less time to acclimatise and prove themselves. Coaches are going to be tempted to play safe and fill their rosters with as many veterans as possible. Undrafted players might well be better off trying to secure a season in the UFL or CFL rather than gambling on the NFL giving them a fair shot.

There is always next year, and a season in professional football (albeit at a much lower level) might help them stick on a roster in 2012.

Even if the court removes the stay, I doubt it will mean business will be conducted as it was under the CBA. There is nothing in anti-trust that proscribes when a business needs to start looking for new employees or how to run a sports league, just that a cartel cannot conspire to limit employee rights. The league will stall and provarocate because, absent the CBA it wont be able to do anything. Even attempting to sign draft picks could lead to an anti-trust violation, if just one draft pick decides he would rather play for another franchise and takes it to court.

If AJ Green says he wants to play elsewhere the owners would have a hard time convincing a court that not one other franchise other than the Bengals would want him on their squad.

So if the last guy taken in the NFL draft is “Mr. Irrelevant” – what do you call the last guy taken in the UFL draft?
