Vick says Osama “deserved every bit of it”

Wild Card Playoffs - Green Bay Packers v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

At a time when Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall has angered plenty of football fans with controversial remarks regarding the killing of Osama bin Laden and 9/11, the guy who plays quarterback for the team located on the opposite side of the Keystone State had a much different perspective on the situation.

“It was about time,” Vick told 102.1 FM and 1490 AM The Game in Virginia Beach.  “What he so-called did to our people, took so many innocent lives.  Hey, he deserved every bit of it.”

People can agree with Vick, and they can disagree with Vick.  Ditto for Mendenhall.  The reality is that Vick’s comments mesh far more closely with popular opinion than Mendenhall’s, which means that, while Mendenhall was chastised for his views, there’s a good chance Vick will be celebrated.

Although he’s absolutely right, I can’t help but think about every bit of what he deserves for what he did to them poor dogs.

damn, i hate to say i agree with him.

  4. urfinished says: May 4, 2011 9:31 PM

Why is that news? Some people are always just going to hate Vick…does that mean you post everything he says so we can get the same people to spew hate again and again and again?
He’s doing everything he can to make up for his mistakes. It won’t happen overnight. 99% of the people who judge didnt grow up in that borderline poverty stricken area of Newport News where Vick learned about dog fighting. People need to realize how much socio-economics affect this and many other cultural divides. What he did was certainly wrong…he’s trying to make it right…again…it will take time. I’m done hearing people act like they are his ultimate judge though.
Repeat offenders hating on Vick in 3, 2, 1…

I tell you what I use to be a big Vick hater, because of what he has done in the past. Now, I have to say he is a changed man, and I am starting to respect him, by the way that he talks and the way that he acts now, and I personally agree with Vick on what he says.

and of course it probably came from his publicist.

  8. tblitz25 says: May 4, 2011 9:34 PM

  13. moochzilla says: May 4, 2011 9:40 PM

    My man.

As for Mendenhall…is it me, or are the Steelers beset every offseason by one of their players doing something exceptions silly / offensive?

The Steelers fans will get on Mendenhall, talk about what an embarrassment he is. Then they’ll cheer him week 1 when he scores his first TD and run to buy their kids his jersey.

  14. oldbyrd says: May 4, 2011 9:40 PM

  17. rpiotr01 says: May 4, 2011 9:41 PM

Osama was the name of one of Vick’s favorite dogs to beat. Don’t go wrapping him in the flag just yet.

  19. wheels27 says: May 4, 2011 9:42 PM

he saw the negative publicity Mendenhall got and tried to take advantage of it. Just look at his comment ‘what he so called did’ should show that he just wants positive remarks. Doesn’t sound like he means any of it.

What the hell does “What he so-called did” mean anyway?

    so-called did…yeah.

Dog killer speaks of people killer.

Vick corrected his mistakes and its obvious that Osama did not. He has every right to say that, and 99% of America will agree with him.

Mendenhall spoke his mind, and though it was controversal, it shouldn’t be taken out of context. I am pretty positive that the Steeler’s running back is not a terrorist, so people reading too much into that can relax.

  34. lamepftposter says: May 4, 2011 10:01 PM

  35. j0esixpack says: May 4, 2011 10:05 PM

Mendenhall’s shere idiocy notwithstanding, I think I speak for most football fans when I say that, generally speaking, we don’t really care what football players think.

    Period.

(by the way… “what he so-called, did” – what the f does that mean?)

Vick was just hoping to drown Usama in a 5 gallon bucket or hang him from a tree or fencepost.

  42. Deb says: May 4, 2011 10:12 PM

Not to be cynical, but there’s also a good chance Vick is aware of the Mendenhall situation and taking the opportunity to improve his stock with the public. But I agree with him.

  43. tfbuckfutter says: May 4, 2011 10:13 PM

Vick went on to say “If it was me, I’d have drowned him.”

  57. quadropheniac10 says: May 4, 2011 10:35 PM

“Truther” comment aside, Mendenhall was actually total valid in speaking out against people dancing in the streets over the death of a man- even an enemy and a terrible individual. Rashard didn’t say that he though Osama didn’t deserve it, just that it is below us to get all worked up about the death of a person. His comment about Christianity was totally right- a real Christian (one who follows the teachings of the Bible and doesn’t cherry-pick verses) would not be in favor of capital punishment, celebrating the killing of Osama in the name of vengeance for the victims of 9/11, nor should they come out and claim that a man should “burn in hell” or be tortured.

  59. giablommi says: May 4, 2011 10:44 PM

Of course, Vick was hoping they would have taken him alive so he could put UBL on a rape stand and waterboard him while electrocuting him via a car battery connected to his testicles by jumper cables.

Nothing to see here, move along.

So for the first time (and this doesn’t change my views on Vick) I’ll admit he doesn’t sound or act like a jerk on this one.

  73. mrzazz41387 says: May 4, 2011 11:15 PM

I tend to agree more with Mendenhall. All the cheering and celebrating we did regarding Osma’s death, had an uncanny resemblance to the people in the streets cheering when the towers went down. I hope we are better than that, but by the looks of the New Years eve like celebration, it’s hard to say we are.

  74. keramidas21 says: May 4, 2011 11:20 PM

Thousands of lives of innocent people are totally comparable to that of the dogs. You people that are anti Vick are retarded. I don’t forgive him for what he did nor do I condone it but the fact your saying he can’t express an opium about the head of a terrorist being killed because of his past actions that he served his time for is ridiculous. God forbid any of you people commit a crime I hope people never let you live it down and throw it in your faces every time they hear you speak.

    Think before you post.

  81. passionburnswithin says: May 4, 2011 11:35 PM

I would have respected him more if he had compared his past transgressions to Osama’s. Would show ownership of his mistakes and would have given perspective at the same time. In other words he could have looked humble and stuck up for himself simultaneously. I know people that wanted to see Vick killed because of what he was involved in. Perspective people perspective

  82. hobartbaker says: May 4, 2011 11:40 PM

    ==============================

Actually, that would have been much more humane than the way Vick actually killed his dogs.

A slug between the eyes is quick and painless.

Slamming dogs bodies onto concrete, attaching jumper cables to their testicles, sticking their heads into buckets of water, and throwing small, untrained dogs into the pit pull pens were Vick’s preferred methods of dog execution.

But he’s happy Bin Laden is dead, so he’s got that going for him. Which is nice.

  86. elmobad says: May 4, 2011 11:53 PM

I remember being glued to the TV watching the towers fall and thinking that there had to be something else, some other bomb or device that caused this.. granted the immediate area was devastated but the towers withstood the initial impact and the fire in the upper portion of the building could not possibly effect the lower floors. Well maybe water damage but not total collapse.

In casual conversation today three different people offered three different versions on what really happened on 9-11

I read that Bin Laden was unarmed when the Seals stormed his room… explains the no pic release..
too gruesome I believe was the excuse?

(don’t search for the pics, there is something but I believe it’s a virus)

The only thing Mendenhall owes us is a total effort on the football field, nothing else. He’s entitled to his opinions, if you don’t agree, don’t read it.

If someone asks the guy a question and he answers, why does his opinion vilify him? He is a popular athelete and people ask him his thoughts, regardless if it is in line with popular opinion.
Part of his punishment for what he did is there is a segment of society who will pounce on him forever, and he deserves that. I am an extreme dog lover, I own 6, I have bred, fostered, adopted and worked to find dogs homes and I can see the man past the act, he deserves that too. Enough about the dogs. Actually, if it weren’t for his mistake, thousands more dogs would be dead, many more than he had a hand in killing, it is a silver lining to a horrendous act. EVERYONE knows dog fighting is a serious crime and an inhumane act now. As long as he continues walking the path, I will support my favorite team’s QB!

  92. discosucs2005 says: May 5, 2011 1:31 AM

  100. kevinfromphilly says: May 5, 2011 6:08 AM

I’m guessing “So-called did” means that bin Laden didn’t actually fly the planes into the buildings, even though he set up the whole thing.

BTW, my take on the “celebrating death” controversy is that, celebrating the death of an admitted mass murderer is not the moral equivalent of celebrating the deaths of the people he killed.

  101. gbfanforever says: May 5, 2011 6:43 AM

    1. It’s insane to think the gov’t brought down the twin towers
    2. Osama was responsible for this disgusting act
    3. Mendenhall did not say Osama didn’t deserve to die.

Mike, stop taking his comments out of context. Mendenhall simply said he doesn’t think celebrating death is appropriate.

On the last point I agree with him. Chanting USA, USA, USA to celebrate killing someone like we just won an Olympic Gold medal is disturbing. We need to get a grip on our rapid decline from being good patriots to practicing nationalism.

Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first; nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first.  ~Charles de Gaulle

  103. arbiterflick says: May 5, 2011 7:03 AM

  108. puregreed says: May 5, 2011 7:48 AM

What “he so called did” Doesn’t that mean what we were told he did? Almost like what Mendenhall was saying, LMAO.

Let’s go bomb a country, and take their oil. who’s next?

  109. cswilliams1906 says: May 5, 2011 7:53 AM

this whole conversion is crazy he makes one comment about the Osama thing and it goes back to the dogs its crazy that we live in a hateful world. some of yall act like people dont make mistakes because people do. now im not say the dogfighting is right because its not i seen alot worst stuff happen in this world the dogfighting. this is suppose to be a time we come together as a country and be proud of what our soldiers did. now im a soldier and the last thing im worried about is what Mike Vick 2 years ago im worried about whats going on now. this just blows my mine that people cant say nothing at all because of your past that is just crazy. at the end of the day GOD is going to judge us so let it go if you like Vick fine if you dont fine but its not goin to change anything. OUR COUNTRY HAS MADE A GREAT BIG STEP OF CLOSURE so lets do that.

  110. chapnastier says: May 5, 2011 8:06 AM

    @ puregreed

In case you haven’t noticed the price of gas lately I don’t think we have bombed any country for their oil. And if we have, I’d like to know where the hell it is.

  111. pigeonpea says: May 5, 2011 8:10 AM

Vick’s obvious PR move aside, I find it ironic that the same people who keep defending Mendenhall’s right to question the killing of bin Laden and blame the government for the 9/11 attacks are the same people who condemn anyone who criticizes Vick’s inhuman behaviour. Hypocrisy truly is the way of the world these days.

  112. anthonyfromstatenisland says: May 5, 2011 8:39 AM

Guess Vick’s attention to public-relations details is better late than never – and this coming from someone who has never really liked him, and that has nothing to do with any of the dogfighting business: He’s injury-prone, gets half his passes batted down at the line of scrimmage, and will never give a team the stability on offense they need to go all the way in this league.

  113. baddegg says: May 5, 2011 9:15 AM

“so-called did” — what does that mean?

  114. lucky5934 says: May 5, 2011 9:20 AM

“It was about time,” Vick told 102.1 FM and 1490 AM The Game in Virginia Beach. “What he so-called did to our people, took so many innocent lives. Hey, he deserved every bit of it.”

I did not read through all 112 comments, but I hope someone else caught the part from the quote above where he said “What he so-called did”. What do you mean “so-called”? HE DID IT, HE CLAIMED IT. And yet Vick says “So-Called”?? Pick a side and stick to it Vick.

  115. emperor83 says: May 5, 2011 9:28 AM

Vick has earned back a little respect from me… It’s taken some time, but he’s getting there, little by little.

  116. moochzilla says: May 5, 2011 9:32 AM

“Uh-huh. Steelers fans cheer their players even after they say stupid things. And Eagles fans cheer their players even after they … do you really want to go there, Mr. Pot? ”

Deb, I hope this lowers Mendenhall’s bid value in my fantasy draft so I can get him at a value price! I’ll take him on my team gladly!

Just making the observation that it always seems to be Steelers as of late (Big Ben, Harrison bashing the Prez, Mendenhall).

I remember being at the first Jets game after Keyshawn’s book came out. He was booed mercilessly in pregame intros, because he bashed Wayne Chrebet who was a fan favorite. He caught a 70 yard TD pass and was cheered wildly.

Players do and say stupid things. To pretend we’ll hold them accountable somehow is silly. Although I will say that the dog lovers here have come closest to any group I’ve ever seen – many still refuse to cheer Vick even post-Giants game.

  117. moochzilla says: May 5, 2011 9:34 AM

Did we ever get a clarification on “so-called”?

Was it a reference Mendenhall’s quote?

Or is he suggesting that Bin Laden didn’t actually take part, choosing to hide in a 3rd rate McMansion instead of fighting?

Terror leaders are so tough, they just talk weak and poor kids into becoming martyrs while they talk a big game.

he saw the negative publicity Mendenhall got and tried to take advantage of it. Just look at his comment ‘what he so called did’ should show that he just wants positive remarks. Doesn’t sound like he means any of it

Everyone who says he was doing this as a publicity stunt bc he seen the bad press Mendenhall was getting and figured he would get good press if he said the opposite are idiots. He didnt hold a press conference or go on twitter and bring this up out of no where. He was doing a radio interview and he was asked a question and he gave his answer. It wasnt a big setup for good publicity jesus. You people are being just like Mendenhall you believe everything is a conspiracy . Almost every person in America has been asked what they think about Bin Laden getting killed. If answering that question is a stunt then theres about a 1/2 billion people in America trying to get good publicity.

And him saying “what he so called did” is just a turn of phrase. Its just a way someone would respond if they dont know all the details about something. Hes saying that hes not an expert in what Bin laden did that he only knows what hes been told about it.

Would you rather have him just make things up and act like he knows about things that he doesnt like Mendenhall did? Mendenhall started talking about sky skrapers, airplanes, and demoltion like he knows what a building should look like when it collapses when its hit by an airplane. And how when the towers fell it looked more like it was demolished on purpose. Like he knows how these things work.

You people are doing basically the same thing. You are saying Vick said it for publicity but you really have no clue if he did. Your acting like you know how his pr team works. Like you have some inside knowledge into how they use the press. When really your just talking out your a@$.

People who talk and act like they know about something that they dont just show there ignorance. Thats what Mendenhall did he commented on something he had no clue about and he showed his ignorance. Exactly what Vick didnt do. He knew he didnt no everything about Osama and the things he did so he didnt go into that he said he believes the man got what he deserved based on what hes heard hes done.

But still you guys attack him and act like you know he wasnt being sincere. Even though you have no basis for that assumption.

  119. Deb says: May 5, 2011 11:13 AM

    @moochzilla …

Yeah, but people keep making these observations about Steelers fans when they’re equally applicable to all fans. Evidence in Ben’s cases is overwhelming. He’s an idiot but that’s all. Mendenhall, too. I don’t mind cheering for idiots–or watching them in films or going to their concerts. I enjoy Celebrity Apprentice even though Trump is an idiot … and an amoral, egotistical buffoon. People are cheering the colors, not the men.

Can we please try to stick to the facts here.

From a guy whos handle is ReidStinks. Your the last person who should be commenting on peoples negativitly when you cant even make a positive user name.

It’s the same as the hood rats who say “you know what I’m saying” every 2 or 3 sentences when they speak.

It’s just another sign of an uneducated bum who can play ball.

“I remember being glued to the TV watching the towers fall and thinking that there had to be something else, some other bomb or device that caused this.. granted the immediate area was devastated but the towers withstood the initial impact and the fire in the upper portion of the building could not possibly effect the lower floors. Well maybe water damage but not total collapse.”

Simple physics and engineering tolerances explain the collapse of the towers. It has been explained ad nauseum by countless engineers with no dog in the fight either way.

Conspiracy theories are for the paranoid and weak minded. Conspiracy is interesting, romantic, thrilling and easy – truth is often boring, dry and hard.

    There was no conspiracy.
    There was no controlled demolition.

I’ve seen all the explanations and have accepted them as fact ONLY because to coordinate other explosive devices would have been near impossible. As for the initial viewing tho..

I’m sure you watched the event unfolding and thought to yourself Both towers are going to collapse into a 50′ pile of rubble!

I’m not much of a MV fan off the field but I gotta say to all the haters out there Vick did his time and he knows a thing or two about being brought to justice. I’d swear PETA lovers are so delusional. What do you think Vick should have been executed too? I love animals and it makes it tough to accept a guy back after what he did, but he served his time; justice has been served. So drop the hate and lets play some football. Hopefully soon.

Hahaha, classic! I get a big chuckle everytime I read this kind of comment. I am certainly not anti Vick, I agree that he was punished, and we need to move on, but get your facts straight. Mike Vick never served one second in prison for killing dogs. He was never charged for killing dogs. He served time in prison for interstate gambling. I will give you that it was interstate gambling for dog fighting, lol, but he never served time for killing dogs. So the argument that he served his time for killing dogs is retarded at best…

Vick has entertained billions throughout his career. And because of his fame, hes been able to do more for animal rights in 2 years than the vast majority of the public could do in a lifetime.

Oh, and SF24, the charges were in a related case. Larger penalties for the gambling. But make no mistake, Vick knew he was in prison for gambling and dog fighting. Al Capone had to know he wasnt being dragged in just for tax evasion.

What has be done? Told kids he would still be doing it if he hadn’t been caught. Vick said a month ago that he would do it all again.

It’s the same silly, senseless banter & hollow words all Vick supporters are famous for.

  133. discosucs2005 says: May 9, 2011 6:48 PM

    “Vick has entertained billions”

Might want to check that math.

“And because of his fame, hes been able to do more for animal rights in 2 years than the vast majority of the public could do in a lifetime.”

People always like to throw that quote. I first heard it on Around the Horn in a sad attempt to justify Vick’s winning of that Courage Award. The logic behind this quote is horribly flawed. It tries to take one narrow result of the situation and turn it into the total consequence. “Vick’s killing dogs, saved dogs in the future, thus it’s ok.” It’s often how war is justified too. “All those people died, but more would have died had we not gone to war.” In an acute sense, that may be true, but that doesn’t make the original actions any less tragic or disgusting.

  134. loytomaki says: May 10, 2011 12:22 AM

Talk about going for the low hanging fruit. Congrats on taking on such controversial issues Mike Vick!

Or should I say congrats to your PR firm instead. Whats next?
“Vick says Japan disaster ‘really sucks’.”
    or
“Vick totally against stoning people to death.”

I hate to be a cynic, but at least he could have pointed to the story and said “Sure I am a dick, but at least I didn’t KILL THOUSANDS!”

I am reminded of Chris Rock’s rant about people wanting to be congratulated for “taking care of their kids” That is what you are supposed to do! Yes Osama deserved death and worse, we already know that! But thanks for your approval Mike Vick, and thanks for taking the time to attach yourself to the story in an effort to continue your image rehab.

If you want to be a better man stand up for someone who needs it, and somewhere where it is less popular. I am pretty sure the country is already anti-mass-murderer.

  135. theoriginalcaptainmarvel says: May 11, 2011 7:56 AM

Deb – Steelers fans are the only ones who overwhelmingly pretend that they’ll hold the player accountable and give him a hard time when the season rolls around.

The rest of the fan bases are more realistic – we’re like mob wives, just produce and we’ll support you.
