Hines Ward cuffed at gunpoint in stolen-car misunderstanding

AP

Steelers receiver Hines Ward, who has spent the offseason as one of the contestants on Dancing with the Stars, had to do a different type of tapdancing early Thursday.

According to TMZ, Ward, who was the passenger in a car driven by an unnamed female, was handcuffed at gunpoint after police checked the license plates and realized the vehicle had been reported as stolen.

As it turns out, the driver had previously reported the car as stolen after an incident with a valet.  She didn’t let police know she’d gotten the vehicle back.

Per the report, the police verified the story and allowed them to leave from the scene of the stop.

  1. Wonder if he still had that big S-eating grin on his face he is known for when the cuffs were on.

  2. Oh god here we go…

I hope you people know what “misunderstanding” means. Otherwise this could turn into another 100-post Steelers bashing thread for absolutely no reason.

  3. According to CJ this must have been racially motivated. The fact that the police did their job is irrelevant when it concerns wealthy black/asian dudes.

  4. This is not a story. The man did nothing wrong. The female messed up, but also didn’t do anything illegal. A non-story like this can only be misunderstood and lead to damaging a good man’s reputation. Nothing good can come of it. It just shouldn’t be here.

  5. “Per the report, the police verified the story and allowed them to leave from the scene of the stop.”

And they didn’t soot him in the face, but did they let him keep the handcuffs?

  6. Bottom line, if you’re an nfl star, surround yourself with smarter friends. How can you forget you filed a police report?

  7. Can you describe the carjacker?
“Well, officer he was a bald, half-black-half-Korean male, about 6’1″ and in phenomenal physical shape, and oh yeah, he was wearing two HUGE rings.”

  8. Damn! Sounds like the Pittsburgh PD. Just hope for Hiney’s sake his wife doesn’t read this story! OUCH!

Steelers all night better yet Fo Life!

  9. This happened the other day to someone who was on his way to buy my car. The cops pulled him over and because he couldn’t find the car registration, the police thought his car was stolen and wouldn’t let him leave for forty minutes. I hate cops.

  10. We really shouldn’t believe this! What kind of person celebrates theft? It’s amazing how people can BELIEVE a woman they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side….

  12. Mendenhall wants us to hear the valet’s side of the story before we pass judgement. Please be respectful.

  13. Slumming in a Honda Civic in LA!! A Honda Civic!! Keeping it on the real down low Hines? Did anyone reach out to Mrs Hines Ward to see what her opinion on this is & if she knows the woman Hines was riding around w/ @ 2 am?

  14. You guys are right…let’s hear the other side of the story. The cop may have cuffed him at gunpoint because he’s an arrogant prick.

I feel bad for the struggles of the young, rich and black.
    [/sarcasm]

    I second that notion.

  16. ‘Nothing good can come of it.’

Actually it stands as a public service announcement that if you call your car in stolen and you get it back you might want to call the police back.

  17. For better or worse, all the most commented stories will be about Steelers soon.

  18. He should be thankful that he isnt entering the NFL draft – or else McShay and the boys would label him as having CHARACTER ISSUES!

“LOL couldn’t have happened to a better person”

What? Being released by the police?
I suppose that’s better than copping a plea deal that lets you buy off the silence of your murder victims’ families…

  20. At some point, Pft commentators simply fuel the fire…….we all know that, but within the last year, we have have Ben running amok with his junk exposed, Rashard whatever his name is, acting as if he is some sort of political savant via twitter, and now, hines “cameras love me and i can’t shut up Ward”, and you expect fans of other teams to say, oh thats right the Rooneys own them, they are all class, you are all just haters, when if an opposing rival did it, you’d be all over them…..

  21. Ok, Ward did nothing wrong, and the police officer did nothing wrong. If anybody screwed up it was the owner of the car forgetting to tell police that she had found her car. It doesn’t seem as though Ward is complaining about what happened and there’s no report of police brutality or that the officer was over stepping his authority, so why is this a story?

  22. You left off this part from TMZ’s account: “Law enforcement sources tell us Hines was VERY cooperative and understanding about the situation.”

    You lil pot-stirrer, you 😉

  23. Looks like the driver was a victim of DWBAB. Driving while being a bimbo. I mean forgetting to turn off the coffee pot? Fine. But forgetting to tell the cops to close your police report? Not so much.

    Aren’t they always?

  25. Part of Hines just wanted to steal the car and run staight it over to the chop shop. But another other part of him couldn’t resist causing a multi vehicle pileup by stopping in the middle of the freeway and turning the wrong signal light on.

  26. Although he was not booked and was released, technically I think PFT has to count this for purposes of resetting the “Days without an arrest” ticker. The guy was put in handcuffs so for that moment he was, in fact, under arrest.

    —————————-

The cops were doing their job. I hate idiots who can’t find their registration (and idiots who blame the wrong people).

  28. What I find most funny about this story is that the real TMZ got to the story before the wanna-be TMZ, (PFT), did.. You got to step up your game Mike. TMZ is encrouching on your turf.

  29. This happened the other day to someone who was on his way to buy my car. The cops pulled him over and because he couldn’t find the car registration, the police thought his car was stolen and wouldn’t let him leave for forty minutes. I hate cops.

    =========================

Yeah, I’d love to see how long you’d last without police protecting your ass.

    Idiot.

  30. If this was a misunderstanding why the handcuffs?

Pull guns and ask questions later. To serve and protect………RIGHT!!!!!!!!

    ======================

You’re right. When they’re pulling someone over in a stolen car, they shouldn’t treat them as criminals. They should just let them be on their way.

    Right.

  31. 1:30 a.m!!!! Hines, you should have been in bed–you have a dancing competition to win.

Hines and his wife broke up a couple of years ago. But it’s nice that you’re so concerned. Being such a straight-up guy, I’m sure you have only her welfare and that of their son in mind.

  33. this would be hilarious if fascism werent so unfunny…im surprised they didnt just shoot him, he is lucky he wasnt in las vegas or he would be a corpse…

  34. I seriously doubt that it was Hines Ward involved in this incident…we all know the real Hines Ward would’ve punched the cop or kicked him in the nuts when he wasn’t looking!

  35. Big Ben sits in his home watching Girls Gone Wild and staying out of the headlines. Too bad Rashard and Hines keep the Steelers in the crap media.

  36. I think handcuffs and gun point are pretty standard for a stolen car. The question is, what made them run the plates?

    ————————–

Police run probably 500 license plates in the course of an average shift — some cars even have scanning equipment so they don’t have to type the plate numbers into the computer manually. They’re checking to see if the car is properly insured, if the owner has any outstanding warrants or is prohibited from driving, or needs to be served documents of any sort, as well as ensuring the vehicle isn’t reported stolen.

The handcuffs and gunpoint are in no way standard for a driver who has stopped in response to the siren and is otherwise being co-operative. They might handcuff the driver while checking out the story but not otherwise.

For the passenger to be handcuffed, at gunpoint, if he was co-operative, really suggests profiling as the explanation.

    ****************************************

Umm, if I am ordered out of a car with two guns trained upon my forehead, I think I would be cooperative and understanding as well. Hell, I would probably offer to wash their car.

  38. The bigger story here is that Hines Ward was in the car with a female. Big Ben won’t be pleased.

  39. First of all….it’s DWB (driving while black) and if you think they were pulled over because of his skin color, you’re as jaded as they come. The plates showed the car as stolen. I am so sick of people crying racism for every negative thing that happens to people of the same race. Are certain people in this world guilty of still being racist? Sure, but I’m tired of the race card being used as an excuse.

  40. If the story had been complete (as it is on other sites), it would have reported how the police reported that Mr. Ward was polite and nonconfrontational and after everything was clarified was allowed to leave without incident, and that Mr. Ward reported that there was no harm done and the police were just doing their job. Hmmm… imagine that. Police doing their job, accused doesn’t get beligerent, situation cleared up, no harm done. Let that be a lesson to those who get indignant when questioned about something. (And a testament to what a class act Mr. Ward is, despite the assertions of Raven and Bengals fans)

  41. Alarming how this site allows blatantly biased comments against Black athletes. How comments that too often belittle the history of heinous deadly racism that has shaped our history and our present are allowed to be thrown around as kindllng by those with a willful ignorance of our history. Yet the comments that point out that these dangerous ignorant examples have, in our past, been a genesis for a cyclical repeating of history in some form; these are the comments that get censored.

  43. @espnfeedback

nice use of some big words to try to make yourself sound intelligent. There are a lot of modern examples of racism in our society, especially of police harassing black men. but this isn’t one of them. He was in a car that was reported stolen. that’s it that’s the bottom line. it wasn’t because he was black, it’s because the car was reported STOLEN! The police didn’t do anything out of line here. stop trying to find every little excuse to cry racism. there are some things that are definitely examples of racism, this isn’t it. But when you cry racism at every opportunity eventually people stop listening to you.

  44. Handcuffs & gunpoint are NOTHING compared to what his wife will do when she finds this out.

Ole Hiney is about to get his hiney tanned..and his bank account cut in half…Just ask Tiki Barber.

Is it me…or are Steelers dominating offseason headlines again???

Ward needs to call Ben…and find God.

We do need more stories about Ben saving himself for his wedding night..That one brought tears to my eyes. Such sentiment & love shown for each other…Though is great they think rape doesn’t count.

  45. Before genericravensfan@PFT gets excited, no, he will not be released from the Steelers or placed in prison. He’s an old man, has two shot knees, and nowhere near the receiver he used to be, but he’s still your Daddy.

Pssst. Hines has been divorced for a couple years now. FYI. Bet you wish you had a DELETE button huh?

  47. Already 70 comments about a car that wasn’t stolen and a player that wasn’t arrested (who doesn’t have a wife at home to care who he’s driving around with).

    Obsessed much?

    GO STEELERS!!! 😆

  48. The BIG story here is that so many clueless ppl feel that cops are racist because they stopped a reported stolen car and pulled their guns out……..I have news for you people– THATS THEIR JOB!! If a car is reported stolen the cops stop it regardless of the color of its occupants. They pull their guns out because they want to go home at the end of their shift. Stolen cars are often used by gang members to do drive-by’s and other violent crimes. Cops did nothing wrong and Hines did nothing wrong yet dozens of people have nothing better to do than sit on their computer and cast judgement on other ppl for absolutely no reason!!

  49. Hines is not married. People should take a few seconds to do some research before making comments that are incorrect.

I guess this satisfies the “at least one Steeler story a day” rule here. Poor choice though IMHO. Like many have already said, it is a non-story.

    GO STEELERS!!

  50. What kind of an ahole reports their car stolen because a busy valet can’t produce it fast enough?

But let’s face it, Pittsburgbh fans wouldn’t care if he had stolen the car, kidnapped a baby, smoked crack, shot a cop and raped 10 women and 3 men…

Certain posters would have nothing better to do than write 5,000 words on why “technically” he wasn’t guilty.
