Hines Ward cuffed at gunpoint in stolen-car misunderstanding

Hines ward, Kym Johnson AP

Steelers receiver Hines Ward, who has spent the offseason as one of the contestants on Dancing with the Stars, had to do a different type of tapdancing early Thursday.

According to TMZ, Ward, who was the passenger in a car driven by an unnamed female, was handcuffed at gunpoint after police checked the license plates and realized the vehicle had been reported as stolen.

As it turns out, the driver had previously reported the car as stolen after an incident with a valet.  She didn’t let police know she’d gotten the vehicle back.

Per the report, the police verified the story and allowed them to leave from the scene of the stop.

I hope you people know what “misunderstanding” means. Otherwise this could turn into another 100-post Steelers bashing thread for absolutely no reason.

According to CJ this must have been racially motivated. The fact that the police did their job is irrelevant when it concerns wealthy black/asian dudes.

  7. ponci21 says: May 5, 2011 9:52 AM

This is not a story. The man did nothing wrong. The female messed up, but also didn’t do anything illegal. A non-story like this can only be misunderstood and lead to damaging a good man’s reputation. Nothing good can come of it. It just shouldn’t be here.

  36. bison4me says: May 5, 2011 10:43 AM

Ok, Ward did nothing wrong, and the police officer did nothing wrong. If anybody screwed up it was the owner of the car forgetting to tell police that she had found her car. It doesn’t seem as though Ward is complaining about what happened and there’s no report of police brutality or that the officer was over stepping his authority, so why is this a story?

  37. Deb says: May 5, 2011 10:46 AM

Part of Hines just wanted to steal the car and run staight it over to the chop shop. But another other part of him couldn’t resist causing a multi vehicle pileup by stopping in the middle of the freeway and turning the wrong signal light on.

  41. jo3jo says: May 5, 2011 10:57 AM

Although he was not booked and was released, technically I think PFT has to count this for purposes of resetting the “Days without an arrest” ticker. The guy was put in handcuffs so for that moment he was, in fact, under arrest.

I think handcuffs and gun point are pretty standard for a stolen car. The question is, what made them run the plates?

    ————————–

Police run probably 500 license plates in the course of an average shift — some cars even have scanning equipment so they don’t have to type the plate numbers into the computer manually. They’re checking to see if the car is properly insured, if the owner has any outstanding warrants or is prohibited from driving, or needs to be served documents of any sort, as well as ensuring the vehicle isn’t reported stolen.

The handcuffs and gunpoint are in no way standard for a driver who has stopped in response to the siren and is otherwise being co-operative. They might handcuff the driver while checking out the story but not otherwise.

For the passenger to be handcuffed, at gunpoint, if he was co-operative, really suggests profiling as the explanation.

First of all….it’s DWB (driving while black) and if you think they were pulled over because of his skin color, you’re as jaded as they come. The plates showed the car as stolen. I am so sick of people crying racism for every negative thing that happens to people of the same race. Are certain people in this world guilty of still being racist? Sure, but I’m tired of the race card being used as an excuse.

  63. tk1966 says: May 5, 2011 12:39 PM

If the story had been complete (as it is on other sites), it would have reported how the police reported that Mr. Ward was polite and nonconfrontational and after everything was clarified was allowed to leave without incident, and that Mr. Ward reported that there was no harm done and the police were just doing their job. Hmmm… imagine that. Police doing their job, accused doesn’t get beligerent, situation cleared up, no harm done. Let that be a lesson to those who get indignant when questioned about something. (And a testament to what a class act Mr. Ward is, despite the assertions of Raven and Bengals fans)

Alarming how this site allows blatantly biased comments against Black athletes. How comments that too often belittle the history of heinous deadly racism that has shaped our history and our present are allowed to be thrown around as kindllng by those with a willful ignorance of our history. Yet the comments that point out that these dangerous ignorant examples have, in our past, been a genesis for a cyclical repeating of history in some form; these are the comments that get censored.

nice use of some big words to try to make yourself sound intelligent. There are a lot of modern examples of racism in our society, especially of police harassing black men. but this isn’t one of them. He was in a car that was reported stolen. that’s it that’s the bottom line. it wasn’t because he was black, it’s because the car was reported STOLEN! The police didn’t do anything out of line here. stop trying to find every little excuse to cry racism. there are some things that are definitely examples of racism, this isn’t it. But when you cry racism at every opportunity eventually people stop listening to you.

The BIG story here is that so many clueless ppl feel that cops are racist because they stopped a reported stolen car and pulled their guns out……..I have news for you people– THATS THEIR JOB!! If a car is reported stolen the cops stop it regardless of the color of its occupants. They pull their guns out because they want to go home at the end of their shift. Stolen cars are often used by gang members to do drive-by’s and other violent crimes. Cops did nothing wrong and Hines did nothing wrong yet dozens of people have nothing better to do than sit on their computer and cast judgement on other ppl for absolutely no reason!!

But let’s face it, Pittsburgbh fans wouldn’t care if he had stolen the car, kidnapped a baby, smoked crack, shot a cop and raped 10 women and 3 men…

Certain posters would have nothing better to do than write 5,000 words on why “technically” he wasn’t guilty.
