Rex Ryan says Jets won’t play second fiddle to Giants

Rex Ryan AP

During his Thursday visit to PFT Live, part of the effort to promote Play Like You Mean It, Jets coach Rex Ryan addressed the growing sense of rivalry between the two teams that share a stadium in New Jersey.

Ryan says that “people see where the Jets are heading,” and that they’re not happy “playing second fiddle” to the Giants.

Still, Ryan says he’d much rather beat the Patriots than the Giants.

He’ll get two cracks at both teams this year, with the usual home-and-home against the Pats and a preseason and regular-season contest against the Giants.

Let him try and beat the Dolphins, which he is 1-3 against since taking the head coaching job, before he worries about beating Super Bowl winning teams!

  3. dryheaveone says: May 5, 2011 5:38 PM

In other news Ryan also said the Jets are the best team in the history of football and The Lombardi Trophy should be renamed the, “Ryan Trophy”……The media immediately wet their collective pants and ran to their editors with the big story

…but remarks that the second toe is very sexy and should never be longer than the great toe but just longer than the third…but back to the Giants…

  9. jets2481 says: May 5, 2011 6:01 PM

would you rather have rex say “the giants are better then us, and always will be?” no. hes the jets head coach, so he has to believe his team is better then others. hes saying what he has to say to motivate his team. and hell get the chance to prove it this year, if he hasnt already the last two years with the jets having vastly more success then the giants. also, it was great that tuck said he didnt have a ring when he beat the giants to get his own (although its not as a head coach, its still a ring)

  10. waldoampere says: May 5, 2011 6:03 PM

The Giants are much older than the Jets and have more fans (it’s about 60-40 Giants in the tri-state area). That being said, Giants fans have hated the Jets for years for no good reason other than they wanted to be the only show in town. It’s a big city and big area with more than enough room for both teams. The Giants fans disdain for the Jets and their fans is, quite frankly, childish.

  11. schmitty2 says: May 5, 2011 6:03 PM

The only given on the Jets is every year Ryan runs his bigmouth and every AFC Championship game the camaras pan to Fireman Ed crying in the stands

  12. ttommytom says: May 5, 2011 6:04 PM

Everyone in the greater NY area knows that a Jet fan is someone who couldn’t get Giants’ tickets.

Rex can’t change that reality with his mouth. Talk is cheap.

    PS

The only thing classy about the Jets is the future HOF’r Curtis Martin.

  13. arnoldziffel says: May 5, 2011 6:08 PM

Rex wants to be the Big Toe.

  14. raijinnokumo says: May 5, 2011 6:09 PM

As a Giants fan I couldn’t care less what this clown has to say. Always flapping his gums about somebody or something.

  15. p4ever says: May 5, 2011 6:10 PM

Mike you go so hard on Ochocinco for self promoting but you become a softie for Rex. Can you explain this double standard to us?

  16. peanutbutter&jelly says: May 5, 2011 6:14 PM

there he goes again, i’ll buy him a silk screen shirt & matching hat that says superbowl champion n.y. jets if he would just stfu

  17. kd75 says: May 5, 2011 6:18 PM

I like REx’s bravado, but 1925 is longer than 1960. Sorry Rex, NYC will always be blue. Green is ugly.

  18. kd75 says: May 5, 2011 6:20 PM

    It ain’t easy being Green…

  19. berniemadoffsides says: May 5, 2011 6:31 PM

Look, I like Rex Ryan, but we have 3 Super Bowls and they have 1 from 40+ years ago. Our last one is arguably the best ever, top 3 definitely.

Jets D is terrifyingly good, offense is average. Our offense is always solid, so is our defense.

We’re more concerned with beating the Eagles, Boys and Skins than a once-every-four-year opponent, but thanks for the bulletin board material.

  20. promin1 says: May 5, 2011 6:42 PM

@jets2481, what we would like to see is Ryan just shut the F up and coach his team. He doesn’t need to come out and say that he won’t play second fiddle to the Giants. He can think it, he can tell his players that, but to say it in the media is just ridiculous, childish, and self serving. He is a class A jerkoff and everyone knows it except Jets fans who just love the attention after having none for 4 decades. Congrats. Your team is a circus side show. Maybe someday they can get attention for actually winning something instead of running their mouths and coming up short two years in a row.

    ——————-
First, Giants fans outnumber Jets fans by much more than 60-40. Proof positive…you still had to beg “fans” to buy PSLs even though you gave the whole upper tier away for FREE.

Second, and more importantly, us Giants’ fans hardly give your team any thought. You’re in a different conference and for the large majority of your team’s existence, have roundly suuuuccked. If you ask most Giants’ fans, we would have actually rooted FOR your team the last few years if your fans weren’t such sh-thedz. We figured if you finally won a SB, you wouldn’t be such jagoffs.

  22. jackfnburton says: May 5, 2011 6:47 PM

Talk is cheap Rex. You’ve got 60 minutes to prove it on the field. Nothing else matters. It’s not what you say, it’s how you play.

    Jets2481 –

You need to relax. First, if the Colts didn’t forfeit two years ago, you’d have been watching the playoffs with us. Second, you went 11-5 last year and we went 10-6. Only in a Jets’ fans’ perverted mind would one more win qualify as “vastly more success”.

Third – do you really think two whole years has made us envious of your existence. Oh child.

  24. ampats says: May 5, 2011 6:52 PM

Only problem with statement is that the Jets ARE SECOND FIDDLE TO GIANTS and ALWAYS WILL BE!!

The Jets and their fans are the Red Headed Stepchildren of NY/NJ Football teams and any Jets fans who think otherwise are probably under the age of 30.

    NYJ82 this is 4 you !

Happy 42nd to the Newark Jets team and fans.

I think back to the days in 1969 when Joe Willie was drunk at poolside making predictions and gas was under $1 a gallon.

Memories, thats what most of todays Jets fans don’t have.

Jets/ Mets/Nets all second fiddle teams in the tri-state area.

    ______________
Schmitty – I have a riddle for you. What is gayer than a fan crying over the loss of a football game? Answer: a fan sitting on another fan’s shoulders pressing his junk against the back of that fan’s neck crying in the stands. :)

  26. rapmusicmademedoit says: May 5, 2011 7:14 PM

Rex has the Jets in the AFC Championship two straight years, the Giants didn’t make the playoffs so please stop talking sheet!!!!!!

Rex you the man, the Jet fans love you so who cares what the hates say, yo Rex, we winning the Super Bowl, yeah, you bet, cool!

Bill bil- i cheat, are the Pats winning the Super Bowl, I DUNNO, DO THEY HAVE A SUPER BOWL. GRUMBLE , GRUMBLE , WHERE IS MY SWEATER WITH THE CUT OFF SLEEVE…..

    waldoampere:

Disdain?!?!??! What planet do you live on?

Most Giants fans have been indifferent or supportive of the Jets the last few decades. The worm only started to turn 2 years ago when every Jet fan became super, super arrogant.

  28. valman61 says: May 5, 2011 7:32 PM

To clarify, as a die hard giants fan and season ticket holder I’ve always cheered for the jets. Feeling bad for them and hoping they can one day experience a title like I have. Until rex came running his mouth about were the best our town blah blah foot toe blah. I was happy to share, I was proud we had a good enough market to support 2 popular franchises, especially as a new jersey resident. But now it’s a hate relationship n I want them to fail. It’s a shame because before Rex ran his mouth, I think allot of giants fans cheered for the jets when they weren’t playing the giants. We viewed them as a non rival who was fun to cheer for before or after the giants games. Now they are hated and will be shown whose town this really is. Rex woke the sleeping Giant.

  29. bluefan204 says: May 5, 2011 7:56 PM

Second fiddle. Always have been, always will be.

    The End.

  30. vomitingliberals says: May 5, 2011 7:56 PM

The Yets will always be 2nd fiddle to the Giants until they win more championships, PERIOD. Of course Jabba the Rex will flap his froggy lips about being top frog, but he’d do that even if his team finished 1-15. Heck, even my Dolphins have more Super Bowl rings (2), and Super Bowl appearances than the Yets & the Jills (5). The Pats are the class of the AFC East, unfortunately for me, but it’s true. Rexy better not put more stock into his victory over the Pats in the playoffs last year because that was only a minor setback for the Pats. Their front office is too damn good to fall behind a monkey organization like the New York Yets!

  31. ratbastardshanahandjob says: May 5, 2011 9:36 PM

Actually there isn’t a fiddle to be played. Rex ate it……

The horizontally challenged Rex would rather play with something else besides a fiddle any way. But he keeps looking down and can’t find it…….

  32. cliverush says: May 5, 2011 9:40 PM

I have heard the foot monster mention more about the Giants the last 3 days then I have the actual head coach of the Giants mention anything the last 3 months. Could it be the NY Giants logos he sees all over the training center out in the parking lot of “their stadium”? This guy is a clown, writes a book about winning NOTHING. Torre, Coughlin, Parcells, Girardi, Davey Johnson, Mike Keenan all Ny coaches that wrote books, see a patttern here? They actually won something! He writes a book yet fails to address the fact hes a sexual deviant who makes soft core porn films with his wife? Can you say phony. Whats great is he mocks Justin Tuck about his Ravens SB win over the Giants(where he was a position coach), Rex, Justin Tuck was a junior in high school that year, he was not on the team!

  35. 3yrsnfl says: May 6, 2011 2:51 AM

You all know he is promoting a book, right? Looks like he has drummed up some publicity. Love him or hate him, you’re still talking about him. Just buy the book already! LOL

Ya Rexy, all talk and no trophys should make Jets fans not happy with where the team is heading.

Oh Giants fans. Relax, take a deep breath and continue to wonder how the f*ck your team blew a 21 point lead with 8 minutes to go against the Birds. Pathetic.

You are so right! Nothing is worse than painful losses. Let me take a week off of work, I’ll pull up a chair and you can entertain me with stories of ALL the painful defeats you’re lil’ green men have suffered over the years.

What’s that you say? One week isn’t enough?

  40. wtf__seriously says: May 6, 2011 1:02 PM

I live right in the heart of their markets, and most of the Giants fans I know also root for the Jets. Same for Jets fans with the Giants.

Rex Ryan is promoting his new book, and PFT hones in on what makes the readership post. And it’s looking like a lot of Giants fans got their feathers ruffled over this, listing in great, GREATTT detail every reason why Rex is wrong. Why so defensive, Giants fans?? You’re attacking Rex’s physique and Rex as a person. Looks to the rest of us like these Big Blue fans got hit in a pretty tender spot, huh? They’re throwing it ALL out there in response.

Relax and take a deep breath. And, basically, mission accomplished PFT and Rex Ryan!

  41. 3yrsnfl says: May 6, 2011 10:09 PM
