As Nick Fairley fell, Broncos tried to get him

It’s been eight days since the first round of the 2011 draft. But since the lockout is still rolling and not much else is happening (we owe Rashard Mendenhall a fruit basket for his help in generating traffic this week), let’s look back to something that may have happened last Thursday night.

According to Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post, the Broncos wanted to get back into round one in the hopes of landing defensive tackle Nick Fairley, who slid out of the top 10.

The Broncos backed off because it would have cost too much to move back into the upper half of round one.

Once Fairley went to the Lions at No. 13, after Detroit failed to move up to No. 5 to get cornerback Patrick Peterson, the Broncos began to eyeball Corey Liuget. Five picks later, however, the Chargers claimed him, and Denver’s dreams of scoring a second first-round pick ended.
