The days without an arrest meter was working its way toward the rare territory of 20 and counting.  Key word:  Was.

Chargers linebacker Antwan Applewhite has been arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to 10news.com in San Diego.

The arrest came early Friday morning, and he was jailed on bond of $2,500.

Applewhite is the first NFL player arrested since April 19, the longest stretch since the lockout started on March 11.

UPDATE:  “It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Antwan Applewhite,” the Chargers said in a statement released Friday afternoon.  “We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”  While the lockout is in force, the Chargers cannot contact Applewhite regarding the situation.

I just don’t get it. I can relate to a carpenter having a few drinks, can’t afford a taxi and takes a chance on driving home. But I don’t understand how these NFL athletes with all the money they make still drive drunk or buzzed. They risk their own and everyone else’s lives, plus a huge fine from the NFL just to save what is chump change to them?? How does that make any sense?

    Technically wasn’t Hines Ward arrested?

Every time the words “San Diego” and “Applewhite” are associated, it brings back memories of the Heaven’s Gate debacle.

Hines Ward was ‘detained’ pending an investigation. Police are allowed to handcuff if they can justify it (threat to run/cause harm) while investigating whether or not the person needs to be arrested.

    shackdelrio,

no- there’s a difference between being handcuffed and being arrested

I think we should take this time to give a round of applause to the players’ union. They managed to straighten up and not have a member arrested for 15 whole days!

Atleast he didn’t use the “do you know who I am” card.

Applewhite should be drinking Apple Juice.

  22. lostsok says: May 7, 2011 12:29 AM

He should have asked the cop, “Do you know who I am!” That worked super well for Legedu Naanee.
