I think the Cards are loving this. It's like they finally figured out how to use the media's lack of respect for them as an organization to their advantage. New day, new QB, nobody knows what they intend to do. Coach said himself when Bulger's name surfaced, "feel free to speculate." The reality is you got no less then 3 speculators reporting that Kolb was/is the target prior to the Cards selection @ 5 in the draft. And No, do not assume it's Peterson for Kolb or even DRC. That's laughable. With 7 starts, 319 pass attempts and 11 career TDs to 14 picks, Kolb a former 2nd round pick is probably worth a 2nd and a conditional in 2012. People are using the Cards to create markets for Orton or Palmer that currently do not exist. I'm not saying Kolb is the best move, although Adam Schein at Fox Sports is, I'm just saying maybe all this speculation is playing into their hands. I for one, hope so.

"I have to disagree. He did throw for 3,600 yards, 20 TD’s and only 9 pics, and didn’t play all the games. He averaged 7.3 yards per attempt which ranked 7th in AFC and he averaged 12.5 yards per completion which was higher than Tom Brady! Orton can get it downfield. He just doesn’t get credit."

Three words: Yards. After. Catch.

Listen, I like the guy. Always have. Give him a running game and a strong defense, like he had with the Bears, and he'll be more than adequate.

But it's tradeoff with him. He's not going to lose you any games, but he won't win any for you either. He can't put anything on a deep ball with any type of regularity and usually winds up missing the mark when trying to do so.

I don't see how anyone can figure that adding a QB like Kolb or Orton would give AZ the division? They even struggled the two years they won it with Warner. They weren't overall favorites to win the division then either. They weren't a dominant team. They were a team that got by with a few upset victories. Warner is a future hall of famer. The thought that an average QB in Orton, and an unproven QB in Kolb..... who will probably be average at best will just coast them to a division title is insane. I'm a niners fan, but there's an entire new system going in place, and the possibility of a long lockout. I give the rams the best shot to win regardless of AZ's or Seattle's new QB. I won't rule out drastic improvement from Alex Smith under Harbaugh, but in all seriousness is there enough time to get the sytem in place? Much of the 49ers problem last year was their 2 play offense. Gore up the middle, or pass to Gore in the flat. The first year for a coach is always tough though and there's added circumstances. I will say this though, depending on who AZ and Seattle turn to for long term QB's...... in 2 years the nfc west isn't going to be everyone's bitch division to laugh at. That is one thing to count on just like in the late 90's and start of this decade.

It seems to me that Orton to AZ for next year's second round pick is the best deal for AZ. He is a worthy upgrade for now and less expensive than a less proven Kolb. From the Bronco's perspective AZ's two should become a top 10 in the round. If Tebow sucks they will have a poor record and plenty of Ammo to get Luck.

Hey Purdueman,

I agree with most of what you said, except that I don't think McNabb to the Vikes makes sense. McNabb was at his best in the west coast offense at Philly and struggled to pick up the Shanahan offense. Remember when they benched him because they had no confidence in his two minute drill ability? From reading PFT the comments seemed the be that McNabb didn't work hard enough to pick up the new offense and master it. The Vikes used the wc offense the last several years, but from what I've heard, Musgrave is going with something else (I'm not sure what). Also, Chilly passed on McNabb, and Chilly knows him well. I think Frazier would be reluctant to pick up a guy connected to Chilly at this point.

I wish the Vikes would have used their #2 for Orton and the #1 for another position. That would have made the Bears games really fun. But there is no way Orton is going to the Vikes now. Bulger or Palmer maybe. I do think Orton in AZ would the best fit for the Cards. Orton is underrated and #2 for him seems like a steal compared to some of the unproven QB's teams took with their #1 pick. Orton put up some great numbers while running for his life most of the time.

BTW, thanks for the sane posts not flaming everyone in sight.

arzcardinals says:
May 6, 2011 12:37 PM
Darkside – you are DEAD ON!

I follow the Cardinals daily and have season tickets (18 years now) and you are correct.

The Cardinals plan is

1) Offer 2012 first round pick to Philly for Kolb – no players, no other picks…if they say ‘no’ or we want more….on to plan 2

2) Get trade offers out for Orton – probably next years 2nd round pick

3) They will sign Bulger and have an open competition.

4) If trade with Denver doesn’t work offer trade for Palmer…if too steep

5) Call up the Redskins and get McNabb for a 6th round pick….that can be moved to a 4th if he meets incentives.
**********************************
I don't get why "reply" doesn't work on certain threads, so I had to cut and paste the above in.

arzcardinals... very well thought out and solid post. Here's what I'd like to add to it...

I agree that no more than a #1 pick should be surrendered in a trade for Kolb, but since Kolb next season still carries a very friendly cap number, I look for Philly to demand more for Kolb (at least a #1 and a #3). It's a sellers market, so I think that they can get it too.

When Denver floated the idea of trading Orton right after the end of last season they were said to be asking for a #2 pick and I think that's about right too. Trouble is, Elway I think is scared to death to turn the team over so quickly to the very inexperienced Tim Tebow (even if he does bring Jesus with him).

I agree with the poster who said that Mike Brown in Cincinnati would rather let Carson Palmer rot than trade him, so I don't think that's an option for any club seeking a veteran QB.

I disagree with you about the Cardinals signing Bulger AND trading for a veteran starter, simply because I'm sure Bulger wants to be a starter (and certainly not compete with another veteran who's brought in at the expense of a high draft pick and by default would then become the "air" apparent).

I think if Washington moves Mc Nabb it will be to the Vikings, where they'll get more back in trade than what you have proposed. That would leave Matt Hasselback as a logical veteran to try and sign as a #2 QB.

There are still a couple of "wild cards" out there that will be in play once the lockout ends too. Where will Vince Young wind up? Tennessee obviously wants to move him, but right now doesn't have enough depth at QB to be in a hurry to do so.

Will Washington roll the dice by resigning Rex Grossman? If not, Grossman's in play too (not that I see him as a #1 QB, but he could be as an interim solution for teams that have drafted QB's this year and want to buy time to develop them).

FA Matt Lineart (obviously not an option for the Cardinals), is also in play seeking a starting opportunity, but with Hasselback being a FA as well I think that if Seattle can't convince Cincinnati to trade Palmer to them, then that's where Matty is going to wind up going.

Bottom line? I honestly can't remember any time in following the NFL for almost 50 years now when there's been such a big separation between teams who have starting QB's that they are sold on and those that don't.

Darkside - you are DEAD ON!

I follow the Cardinals daily and have season tickets (18 years now) and you are correct.

The Cardinals plan is

1) Offer 2012 first round pick to Philly for Kolb - no players, no other picks...if they say 'no' or we want more....on to plan 2

2) Get trade offers out for Orton - probably next years 2nd round pick

3) They will sign Bulger and have an open competition.

4) If trade with Denver doesn't work offer trade for Palmer...if too steep

5) Call up the Redskins and get McNabb for a 6th round pick....that can be moved to a 4th if he meets incentives.

One things for sure and that's that Kyle Orton wants NO PART of wet-nursing glamor-boy Tebow, and I can't blame him one bit for that.

Elway is astute enough though to realize that turning over the keys to the franchise at this point to a very green Tebow (who has yet to even shed his training wheels), could in the long run hurt his development. He also realizes that Orton doesn't want any part of changing Tebow's diapers either, so he's truly between a rock and a hard place.

Keep Orton? You've got a disgruntled QB on your hands. Trade Orton? You're rolling the dice big time that the boy wonder can suddenly and quickly grow up. Glad I'm not a Bronco's fan!

So because it hasn't happened yet, that means is can't ever happen? That's some top shelf analysis by you there, big guy.

I won't run through the list of QB's less talented than Orton who have won Super Bowl's, others have already done that.

I really don't think there is any question that of the "available" QB's, Orton and maybe Palmer are clearly the most ready to step in as a #1.

I still am sticking with Kolb to AZ would be the best option.

This bothers me. I thought he would be the ideal candidate for the Panthers, but in reality, he's the perfect fit for John Fox. The fact that there's a chance he's available now really pisses me off. He would be a great addition and maybe somebody we'll pursue. B/c Denver, as long as Fox is there, your boy Tebow will be collecting dust on the sideline.

“Kyle Orton is a good QB in a structured offense, that calls for no improvisation, no “it” factor, and a classic neckbeard.”

And one that requires no accuracy or arm strength for passes longer than 20 yards.

I have to disagree. He did throw for 3,600 yards, 20 TD's and only 9 pics, and didn't play all the games. He averaged 7.3 yards per attempt which ranked 7th in AFC and he averaged 12.5 yards per completion which was higher than Tom Brady! Orton can get it downfield. He just doesn't get credit.

The problems with the Broncos the past couple years certainly haven't been Orton's fault. He's actually been one of the lone bright spots. He helped turn friggin' Brandon Lloyd into the NFL's leading receiver last year. The Broncos sucked because they had absolutely no running game, the worst defense in the NFL, and a terrible head coach. So Orton would be a great pick-up for a team looking for a quarterback. Kolb would probably be a better choice long-term, but Orton is a way better quarterback than Bulger (who hasn't had a QB rating higher than 71 since 2006) or Hasselbeck (who hasn't had a QB rating higher than 75 since 2007) at this point.
