Anthony Smith, a former Raiders defensive end who was the 11th overall pick in the 1990 NFL draft and who had 57.5 sacks in his career, pleaded not guilty to murder today.

Smith was charged two months ago in connection with the 2008 beating and shooting death of a man in Los Angeles County. Two other men have also been charged in the killing.

After missing his entire rookie season, Smith had a major impact on the Raiders from 1991 to 1993, with more than 10 sacks all three years. Overall he played in 98 games in his NFL career, all with the Raiders.

The 43-year-old Smith was ordered held on $1 million bail.
