Vikings announcement coming today on stadium

Vikings Stadium Football AP

During our weekly Tuesday morning visit with Paul Allen of KFAN, the host mentioned the possibility that the Vikings will be announcing later today a deal with folks in Ramsey County to host the team’s new stadium.

Governor Mark Dayton said that owner Zygi Wilf has confirmed that an announcement of some sort is coming today from the team.

And if the decision is made to put the stadium in Ramsey County, someone will have to come up with an estimated maximum of $240 million for road improvements around the new venue.

Either way, we should know a lot more about the situation later today.

Just build the stadium so these “LA Vikings” idiots can stop trying to show how clever they are.

  4. shackdelrio says: May 10, 2011 1:50 PM

And unlike the stadium they have been trying to build in LA for 30 years, this one may actually be completed in our lifetime.

  5. carlgerbschmidt says: May 10, 2011 1:52 PM

What’s the announcement about? Where they are going to display their Super Bowl trophies. Or wait, that’s right….

I suggest the taxpayers bend over once again… and supply another ‘wealth transfer’ from the poor and middle class… to the ultra-rich.

This is America. A cushioned, too-big-to-fail socialism for the upper class… Darwinian capitalism for the rest of us.

Zygi Wilf will extend his hand… be ready to lick it.

I just hope Target doesn’t get the naming rights to it. Target Center, Target Field, etc. Screw Target… Here’s to hoping there is no corporate sponser and it’s named Valhalla Field.

Something about the phrase “estimated maximum” makes me think of another phrase – “sensationalist journalism”…

LMAO, like a new stadium is going to make a difference for these bums. At least build it without a roof, football is meant to be played OUTSIDE! Any team that has or builds a dome should be banished from hosting playoff games.

  11. clintonportisheadd says: May 10, 2011 2:07 PM

The announcement was already leaked earlier by the A/P..

Minn(A/P) Despite a budget deficit that will reach 6.2 billion dollars next year, Gov. Mark Drayton has announced a tentative deal that will allow the Vikings to get a government handout of $245 million dollars.

“I know we have bad roads, overcrowded schools, and other significant infrastructure needs but hey-it’s football!”. While lawmakers were afraid small government fiscal conservative Tea Party types would object to such a bailout it never materialized. Patriot Liberty Tea Party Head Wingnut Ollie Hanson said when it was a choice between pro football and their principles his members decided it was ok to be viewed as hypocrites. “I know it looks bad” said Hanson. “But Obama is going to get re-elected and I am tired of wearing this wig and tricorn hat anyway. Go Vikes!”

A source close to Ziggy Wilf would not comment on the record but said that everyone was all smiles at Vikings headquarters and the word “suckers” was being heard around the building.

No surprises there. Of course your stadium will be better. Your woman aren’t fat, your kids are the smartest, nobody is toothless, everybody eats healthy, etc., etc., etc. The collective superiority complex of people from Minneapolis never ceases to amaze me…in the face of all evidence to the contrary. 28. aquanorange says: May 10, 2011 2:40 PM

Wishing for an open-air stadium, though I know it’s not likely. As a kid the Vikes were my “NFC team”, and I loved Tark, Foreman, the Purple People Eaters, and the home field advantage they had, with the Norseman pacing the sidelines alongside the piles of snow. I recall some pretty good Rams teams shivering and wishing for the plane ride back to Cali early in the second half. That all stopped when they began to play in that hideous cave. Serious home field advantage if they decide to play outdoors, but football usually takes a backseat to business.

whoaaa now pervy, and everyone else who is reading this as a done deal. As I’ve said before, this is a baby step in the “right” direction for pro-stadium types. In reality, this agreement between the team and the Partner should’ve been worked out months ago. Now that they apparently have that in place, it still needs to overcome the following obstacles:

–Despite being partnered up with Ramsey county, a referendum could be forced in order to spend county money. that would likely be the end of their partnership.

–still has to pass in a legislative session that’s essentially two weeks from being over.

    – Gov. Dayton just now released a statement clarifying the state’s contribution. $300M, maximum, period, including roads. If there’s $175M – $240M of road work that needs to be done, that would be SUBTRACTED from that $300M, leaving the Vikes and Ramsey County each stuck with a much larger than palatable share. (potentially almost a 50/50 split if the roadwork is really going to cost $240M)

the fact of the matter is that the Vikes and MN and Minneapolis and both counties have been woefully tardy in their efforts, now they’re trying to scrap it together and it’s just not going to happen as easily as you’d like. sorry, but that’s the reality of it.

Q: You know why Iowa doesn’t have an NFL team?

A: Because then Minnesota would want one too.

One would think that the Queens fans would learn a little humility seeing who the current reigning Super Bowl Champions are. What is it now, 13 Championships to zero? 4 SB’s to 0? Man, that would sting.

At least you have the Gophers. Or the Timberwolves. Or the Wild. Or the Twins. What’s that? All of those teams are bottom feeders currently?

    Like I said, stings.

No one in L.A. wants the Vikings! Why bring in a bunch of losers? The biggest problem with the Vikings coming to L.A. is that most of the current stupid Viking fans would still stink up most message boards.

Right, yet Viking fans love their team and do not care what others do. Packer fans only care what is going on in Minnesota no matter how many titles they get. Pathetic, wouldn’t you say? I certainly would.

What the hell does any of this have to do with the topic at hand? Fans of the team they prefer to follow are getting excited because they are more than likely going to get to keep their team instead of losing them Lakers style. What is the point of taking wind out of those sails? Any fan of FOOTBALL as a whole should be cheering Vikings fans on in getting this deal done. Clearly you are no such type of person and care only about your little world and not that of the sport as a whole.

There is a movement to change the name and colors to something real.

I don’t know why states/cities don’t try the Green Bay model when a team goes up for sale. State of Minnesota when have been better off to buy the team a few years back from Red McCombs.
Issue non voting shares of the team and/or sell bonds to raise funds.
The NFL team turns a profit so there is no revenue deficit. Taxpayers are not part of “shake down” when the next owner comes along and demands a hand out (Tom Benson of New Orleans) or demands a new stadium a few years after the last one was built (Arthur Blank of Falcons)

Most importantly the team are already a source of civic pride. Now the team will never leave and truly is the cities.

For those of you who would complain socialism- how the Green Bay Packers doing?

Side step what? Our franchise is leaps and bounds better than yours in every facet whatsoever.

The only reason Packer fans comment on Viking threads is because there are no new Packer stories. Our problems are, “Man, how much talent are we going to have to CUT to get down to 53? Are we going to win SB #5 this year? Does the play of the third stringers mean the end of guys like Barnett and Jones?”
