Let's hope Steve chooses to stay an retire in Carolina. He, should give Cam a good experienced NFL receiver to break in with. It will be interesting, and exciting to see Cam Newton to continue his growth into the NFL. It will not be easy. But, he should have a very good career there. He is after all a great athelete. He isn't going to surprise anyone; just show everyone that is the real deal. After, all the heat this young man has had to endure. I believe, he will go way beyond expectations. I'd personally, like to see Vincent Jackson go to the Rams. Stay, with your team Mr. Smith.

rc33 says: May 11, 2011 10:45 AM

He’s already hinted Oakland wouldn’t be a great spot for him? Who’s gonna throw him the ball and more importantly, would fill-in-the-blank schmuck QB get him the ball enough to make him happy?

Coming off no 1st round pick and a mediocre draft, losing their best defensive player(Asamugha) and having a very unstable QB situation?
Yeah, sounds like an ideal scneario for Smith.
-----
The QB situation is stable now that Cable is gone. Campbell isn't great, but Smith could wear boxing gloves and and run routes backwards and still be Oakland's best wide receiver. The Raiders have some decent skill players inside, and Davis likes to write large checks to old receivers. It might not be an ideal scenario, but for Smith it's worth considering.

Lol @ RC33! your analysis off the Raiders couldnt be further off! I agree they dont need another small speedy reciever. He wouldnt fit in. "Who's gonna throw him the ball"? His name is Jason Campbell. The qb situation in oakland is no where near "unstable." Jason is not a franchise qb and I'll admit that. But there is no doubt he is the starter. For the first time in recent history there is no drama in oakland at qb. The draft was not mediocre! They drafted almost everyone they targeted. Look at last years draft results. And until Asamugha signs some where else they havent lost him yet. Please do a little homework on a team before you bash!

@bigbeefyd

@catman – “…a good team”? Really? As a Bronco fan, the only consolation we could take was that we weren’t’ the worst team in the league…Carolina was.
________________________

That's pretty funny considering the fact that your broncos went 4-12 and now have the coach that ruined the panthers. Good luck with that.

Smith will look GREAT in Silver & Black, plus his family will love him returning to his home state to play…..

Yeah, and knowing Al Davis he'll make him the highest paid receiver in NFL history in the process. LOL

I know it's hard for people to understand teams that aren't their favorite. People just have a better understanding of their favorite team, for obvious reasons.

And you know what all you non Carolina fans don't realize? That Carolina won't be THAT bad this year. I'm not about to come out and say they're going to win the division, but the talent on the roster is definitely better than 2-14.

Last year they were ravaged with injuries, with something like 12 starters ending the year on the DL. They had 5 different guys throw the ball. They had a lame duck as a head coach, and just TRY to tell me that that doesn't affect a team's mentality when your own coach doesn't give a crap.

This new coaching staff, I can already tell, is WORLDS better. They seem prepared to take this roster and run with it, and bring an aggression to Carolina we haven't seen in the last few years of Fox's tenure.

Their defense is solid and just got much better through the DL. The only reason they weren't ranked higher is because they had to play with an offense that kept them out on the field nearly the entire game. You get worn down playing like that. But look at this: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef
not too shabby.

They have one of the best running back tandems in the league to help take pressure off Cam, and an OL with several Pro Bowler talents, when healthy. Yes, WR is a weak spot, but they are so young at the position and showed a lot of potential considering the suckfest at QB last year.

So yes, catman72 is right. This very easily could be a good team, but I perfectly understand why a lot of you wouldn't know that.

I fail to understand why anyone would think that if Steve Smith ended up in San Diego, that VJ would be still on the team.

If Steve Smith ends up with the Chargers, I think it is a fairly safe bet that Vincent Jackson will be on another team.

The Chargers are not a cheap team. They play in an old multi-sport stadium which most likely does not generate the type of revenues that the new NFL stadiums with luxury boxes and seat licenses bring in.

In most situations involving multi-sport stadiums, there are some terrible sight lines for viewing football games.

He's a close friend of the Family and he wants to reunite with LA native Hue Jackson...

If not S. Smith, Ocho Cinco will be in Silver & Black before the season starts..

He know's the Chargers don't take Care of thier players.. Just ask V. Jackson so that's not a place for Steves style... The Chargers know that, but they still don't want Steve to go too the Raiders..

Not after seeing them get sweep w/all those players named above.

He's already hinted Oakland wouldn't be a great spot for him? Who's gonna throw him the ball and more importantly, would fill-in-the-blank schmuck QB get him the ball enough to make him happy?

Coming off no 1st round pick and a mediocre draft, losing their best defensive player(Asamugha) and having a very unstable QB situation?
Yeah, sounds like an ideal scneario for Smith.

Catman said: Last year, Carolina was a good team with a few key injuries and no QB. If Cam can play and we can stay healthy, Carolina will be dangerous.

Talk about a HOMER! Carolina was in no way shape or form a good team, injuries or not. No QB on the roster. 1 WR on the roster. No pass-catching threat TE on the roster. Horrific game-planning, play-calling and coaching. Mediocre D. Mediocre O-Line. Ok, which part of that spells "good team" exactly? John Fox did more to sink that franchise than just about anyone short of Matt Millen in Detroit. Smith will have his moments no matter where he goes, but watching the drops last year indicate he's no longer elite. However, there's enough there to help just about any team NOT named the Carolina Panthers.

I know the Chargers rumor was floated, but why would those tightwads splurge for Smith when they are already set at WR?

More needy teams in contention are the Pats, Colts, Bears, and maybe even Ravens or Jets.
