Report: Carroll talks to Leinart about joining Seahawks

Matt Leinart AP

When Matt Leinart was available as a free agent last September, his former coach Pete Carroll didn’t show any interest in signing him in Seattle.   That could change this offseason.

Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News, who breaks plenty of USC-related stories, hears that Carroll and Leinart have spoken about Leinart joining the Seahawks next season.

With Matt Hasselbeck a free agent and no incoming rookie quarterback, the Seahawks have a bigger need at the position than they did last year.  Still, the fact Carroll didn’t want Leinart a year ago as a third quarterback says a lot.

If the Seahawks wanted to bring him in this year — a big if — we suspect nothing would be guaranteed for Carroll’s former prize pupil.  Not even a roster spot.

I hear they have really cool beer bongs in Seattle.

Matt Leinart…….The NFL’s version of Paris Hilton…Give me more attention, don’t you know I’m great….

The Seahawks need to sign Leinart and JD Booty from the Texans, trade for Carson Palmer from the Bengals, and hope Matt Cassel gets outplayed by Ricky Stanzi. Who knows, maybe Sanchez will stop being over-rated and get replaced too?

    Make up your minds?

And we’ll get Bush from the Saints! Yeah, yeah, that’s it!

  7. Slackmo says: May 12, 2011 10:31 AM

Can the re-return of Lendale White be far behind? Reggie Bush will be available soon too!

  8. ftblfan9 says: May 12, 2011 10:32 AM

Maybe Leinart has grown up. If you are a Minnesota fan would you rather have Christian Ponder or Nick Fairley and Matt Leinart.

I’ll take my chances with Fairley and Leinart.

  9. gotitan says: May 12, 2011 10:38 AM

Isn’t there a rule against coaches speaking to players during the lockout? Isn’t there rules against coaches speaking to players under contract? Oh, wait, it just Pete, he plays by his own set of rules.

  10. changsteinelgamal says: May 12, 2011 10:41 AM

Isn’t it at least possible that Carroll doesn’t want to look like Spurrier II, bringing in all of his old college players right away, acting like he knows better than the rest of the NFL?
By giving it a year (at least) he’s much more able to make the case that he’s bringing in Leinart because he’s the right fit at the right time, not for “watch me get more out of him than anyone else has” reasons.

This post null and void if he brings in Bush too.

  11. winkeroni says: May 12, 2011 10:45 AM

Maybe they drafted James Carpenter to play RT so that they can protect Leinart’s blindside. Maybe Leinart has a ton of hidden value that only the Seahawks are able to recognize just like Charlie Whitehurst.

    Interesting, to say the least.

With any luck, Linart could become this year’s version of the Mike Williams rags-to-riches reclamation project.

Scott Wolf is the worst and least accurate reporter who covers USC. I can’t believe PFT ran with a story from Wolf. Classic!!

  18. fatguystrangler says: May 12, 2011 11:13 AM

With a no frills, no guarantee deal, Mike Williams worked out pretty well.
If given the same opportunity, maybe he can jumpstart his NFL career, too?
Options would be nearly non-existannt, otherwise.

  19. kingdm8 says: May 12, 2011 11:19 AM

Personally, I think this would be a good move for the Seahawks. While Leinart is often the subject of ridicule, he did show a lot of promise before getting injured and Warner took over the show. I know many Cardinals fans were more than a little upset that Whiz decided to jettison Leinart and stick us with Derek Anderson. I still believe Leinart could be a good QB in the right system.

  20. tomwill21 says: May 12, 2011 11:20 AM

When you’re going into the season with Charlie Whitehurst, Even Leinart looks like a good option…

  21. fthrvic says: May 12, 2011 11:21 AM

For the love of all that is Holy, please let this happen! Coach Double Rainbow and Matty Hollywood Leinart together again? I’d bet that even ESPN couldn’t ignore some of the matchups the Seahawks would present!

  22. yooperlionfan says: May 12, 2011 11:33 AM

so, why is it i read a different story everyday about some team is interested in this guy, or this team really wants that guy, and nobody seems to care at all. someone please tell me how this is in any way different than what the lions were found guilty of tampering for. i guess it’s ok because it’s just the lions, right. jeez.

As a Minnesota fan, let me say that I’m very glad you do not work in the Vikings front office. Leinart has proven himself to be a failure in the NFL and Fairley plays the same position as Kevin Williams. The Vikings think Ponder can be their QB for the next 10 years and obviously had no interest in Leinart. Otherwise, they would have picked him up last year.

  25. oreo51 says: May 12, 2011 11:41 AM

Seriously, last year the Hawks were pretty set at QB after trading for Whitehurst. This year it is wide open with only Whitehurst under contract. Leinart could compete for a job and stands a good chance of making the roster. Last year, not so much. Yes, Carpenter will do a much better job of protecting than Locklear.

I doubt he could beat out Seneca Wallace with the Browns. Let alone Jake Delhomme.

  28. joegibbsisking says: May 12, 2011 12:09 PM

Watch Carroll pick up Leinart, somehow wind up with Reggie Bush and LenDale White in 2011. He will win a Super Bowl, then ill have a heart attack.

  29. hanktheking says: May 12, 2011 12:14 PM

Aren’t coaches and players “not supposed to be talking”?

  30. krow101 says: May 12, 2011 12:20 PM

Leinhart should go back to school. We all know of Carroll’s commitment to institutions of higher education.

  31. pacificamjr says: May 12, 2011 12:24 PM

the palmer sisters and leinart should all go to the same squad. itd be an awesome USC circle jerk!

  32. lgbarn says: May 12, 2011 12:36 PM

While he’s trying to get the USC gang back together, maybe he can get sanctions against the Seahawks for talking to players during a lockout…just like old times I tell ya

Pretty sure it won’t take Roger Goodell 5 years to come down with a penalty like the NCAA against USC.

  33. danderoo says: May 12, 2011 1:06 PM

I hear that Frostee Rucker and the Ting Twins might be available for Seattle roster spots. Pete will build up USC-North to become a dominant NCAA powerhouse again. One problem, games are played in the NFL this time around.

  34. thefiesty1 says: May 12, 2011 1:34 PM

I’ve said this before, he is perfect for Seattle and they can get him on the cheap. He’s Carroll’s boy. It’s a perfect fit.

  35. freedomispopular says: May 12, 2011 1:37 PM

Yes, coaches and players aren’t supposed to be talking. And it’s been established that most of them probably are. So get over it.

  36. tformation says: May 12, 2011 1:50 PM

Not sure Leinie could even secure a roster spot in Seattle. I seriously doubt he could beat out Whitehurst… let alone Hasslebeck, T-Jack, VY or any of the other potential free agent QBs rumored to go to Seattle.

And I imagine Leinie’s post-college party attitude is even more annoying to Caroll than his party attitude when he was in college.

Caroll let this kid loose ages ago… you have to go back to the “they were who they thought they were” game to see potential from Leinie’s game film…

Excuse me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t he third on the Texans depth chart behind Schaub and Orlovsky, the guy that ran out of the back of the endzone?

  39. rajbais says: May 12, 2011 2:43 PM

Is Pete Carroll trying to reunite Mike Williams and Matt Leinart in order to “capture a championship” again?

Well, they’ll also need Reggie Bush, Lendale White, Winston Justice, Dominique Byrd, Steve Smith, and an anti-BCS Associated Press.

For those who forgot, LSU was the BCS national champion and USC was the AP-National champion; hence they were co-champions.

Anyways, Leinart isn’t even doing MMA workouts with Jay Glazer and that failed to help him in 2008. How will he take a snap as a starter again?

Leinart just doesn’t work hard enough and that’ll keep biting him in the rear!!!

  40. jagerbolt says: May 12, 2011 3:14 PM

Live in AZ, watched Leinart play plenty. He was ok. Nothing very impressive. The biggest issue being lack of leadership. When Warner took over it was like a completely different offense.

Maybe Pete Carroll can put him in a system that works better for him. Who knows.

  41. mogogo1 says: May 12, 2011 3:26 PM

I’d love to know exactly what went down in Arizona when Leinart got dumped during the preseason despite having decent stats. You don’t turn the team over to a combo of Derek Anderson and John Skelton unless something major hit the fan.

haaa love it… The Seahawks should sign JOSH Booty and their troubles would be over….. wait they did didnt they? Had he not decided to play baseball before coming to LSU at the age of 26 he couldve been GREAT! Check out his HS stats… he was supposed to be Montana with a bigger arm but chose Baseball. JD Booty was pretty impressive in HS (Evangel), watched him destroy my team in the semi finals but he was nothing compared to Josh.

Dear Pete, When you are done in Seattle at the end of the year would you consider coaching UMASS. They are entering the big league this year and playing in Foxboro. Just like old times except less hours.
