starks had a couple good games, and thats it. I'll admit he has quite a bit of promise, but to crown him now is a little premature.

I just hope the coaches give the best player the job---regardless of age or salary. Luckily we have MM and TT at the helm who have a pretty good track record of evaluating talent.

Let's break it down:
___________________________________

James Starks - much stronger on contact. Can break tackles, and with our offense focused on passing mainly, we need a back like him that gets whatever yardage he can, and always falls forward.

Pluses: Hands, blitz pickup, ruggedness, vision, ball-security.

Minuses: Needs to protect his body better (with some carefully-placed bulk), or he won't hold up, even though he is still very young.
___________________________________

Ryan Grant - While he doesn't have a terrible amount of mileage on his tires, he has been oft-injured. The clincher is that he seems virtually incapable of breaking leg tackles, and always seems to get tripped up in traffic.

Pluses: straight-line speed, burst, ball-security.

Minuses: Lacks wiggle, and has hands of stone. Major ankle injury (and subsequent surgery) last year is a concern for a soon-to-be 29-year-old RB.
___________________________________

The choice is clear...

Green will be nothing more than a third down back, ST returner. He is a incredible receiver for a big guy and his yards at Hawaii are mirage due to June Jones run and shoot offense. Teach him how to proper pick up the blitz and he will do more damage in the passing game than the running game.

This is Grant's job to lose. He's the only RB on this team earning a veteran's salary. Starks is signed 4 years $1.89 million through 2013, and Jackon just ended a 4 year $2.805 million deal. It makes sense to let Grant play this season out as the featured back, with an injury-prone Starks filling in the blanks. Jackson is the odd-man out here moving foward.

As a die hard Packer fan I can say that Ryan Grant sucks. Starks broke tackles and brought explosiveness that Grant never did. That all being said, Green will be the starter by week 4. Green is the most “talented” back on the roster and he will be great for us.
-----------------------------------------

Uhhh.... No offense, but I seriously doubt Green will beat out Grant or Starks. Don't get me wrong, he has good abilities, but what you can expect from him is a short-yardage back and possibly a 3rd-down back. Which is kind of a sick combination..... If he shows good ability with blitz pick-up, it would be awfully hard to adequately deploy a D for 3rd-short with him in the backfield. But he really hasn't displayed the vision or instincts to run outside the tackles, making him less than ideal for every-down work.

Personally, I like Grant, especially since that little episode with the car company before the Brewers game. I hope he gets his job back, at least for a season or two. However, if he does, and Green fills the short-yardage role, it would be a real bummer to see Kuhn squeezed out.

It really pisses me off to see the Packers having these "problems".....

I seem to recall that Starks was one of the key reasons the Packers went all the way last season. If Grant returns to pre-injury form, those two will make a great duo in the backfield. Green Bay doesn't need an AP in the backfield, they just need a decent running game to keep opposing defenses honest in order to open up their receivers. With both Grant and Finley being thrown back into the mix, the Packers are going to have a very potent offense hitting the field in September.

Rosenthal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brandon Jackson said that this was his last ride in Green Bay!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is he re-signing????

Your colleague MDS said this on Jan. 14, 2011.

"'I enjoyed my opportunities here,' Jackson told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. 'And I really don't know what's going to happen. But if it's here, hey, I'm glad to be here. If it's somewhere else, then I'll take it somewhere else.'

Jackson becomes a free agent this offseason, and he says the Packers have said nothing to him about a new contract."

Rosenthal, learn how to do your homework because your job is easy because your crap is all relied on Google!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Omg Grant had a few 1200 yard seasons? really? wow, that means he averaged 75 yards a game? Oh wow, that is so much. What a hall of famer all pro. How dare I say he is not very good. Your right, he is so good that we can rest our franchise on him and not draft a high potential rb in the 3rd round. Oh wait, we did draft a high potential rb in the 3rd round? So does that mean that a 75 yard a game average rb with no moves or power and a fumbling problem might not be our long term solution? Wow, hmmm, yea Im way off base here. Look Grant is serviceable, he does not suck per se, but give me a break. He is not a top 20 rb in this league and if you think so you are lying to yourself. Green has power and moves that Grant can only dream of. If you disagree then fine, that is your right, but to act like I dont know football because I dont think Ryan Grant should be our starter than you are obviously not seeing things clearly. Thinking Ryan Grant can be upstaged by Green is completely realistic.

I don't want to debate whether Grant is better than Starks, the bottom line is both are perfect fits for the Packers zone-stretch scheme, the one clear advantage for Starks is he is a lot younger than Grant.

One thing is for sure, the Pack will have a strong stable of RB's next year with Grant, Starks, Green, and hopefully John Kuhn...

Glad to see him come back He is the surest RB on the roster, three 1200 yard season in a row before the injury. It does not seem to be the type of injury that will derail his career.

Starks showed some promise, but he did not do enough to even be considered the 1st string RB yet. What flashes he did show look like he may have the potential to be better then Grant but too few games to judge him effectively.

My concern is what this means about Kuhn. He was a fan favorite guy who played RB when he was really more of a FB. His versatility is what let him make the team, if they decide to keep Jackson along with the 3rd round pick, Starks, and Grant they might opt for a more pure fullback which would kind of suck. (I like Kuhn)

His versatility is what let him make the team, if they decide to keep Jackson along with the 3rd round pick, Starks, and Grant they might opt for a more pure fullback which would kind of suck. (I like Kuhn)

As a die hard Packer fan I can say that Ryan Grant sucks. Starks broke tackles and brought explosiveness that Grant never did. That all being said, Green will be the starter by week 4. Green is the most “talented” back on the roster and he will be great for us.

-----------------

Keep your lack of football knowledge to yourself, you're embarrassing the rest of Packerdom.

First, Grant is a one cut runner. Always has been, always will be. 1200 yards churned out the hard way is nothing to sneeze at. Grant was originally brought in when the Packers tried to implement the ZBS. He's a workhorse.

Starks has some more shake to him and really showed up for a kid that didn't play at all in the first half of the season.

Green will be nothing more than a third down back, ST returner. He is a incredible receiver for a big guy and his yards at Hawaii are mirage due to June Jones run and shoot offense. Teach him how to proper pick up the blitz and he will do more damage in the passing game than the running game.

I wish we had more sucky 1200 yard per season rushers like Grant.

To say Grant sucks is just not reality. Sucky players don’t put up back to back 1200 yrd seasons, especially on a team that is pass happy with an oline built for pass blocking.

How can you watch Grant and Starks run and conclude that Grant has more power than Starks? Grant does not break tackles very often and usually goes down on first contact, whereas Starks hardly ever goes down from the first hit and does break tackles.

I love my fellow Packer Fans but those two comments are not based on the facts. Sorry.

______________

You're right---my claim of Grant's better power was not evidence backing, per se; I was merely going off of what I remember seeing, which is relatively subjective.

Both backs seem to be the type who always fall forward---getting those extra 1 or 2 yards at the end of a run. I just remember Starks going down on some breakaways that were very similar to ones that Grant has taken to the house. Then again the sample size on Stark's runs is too small to really make a valid conclusion as to who is more powerful thus far.

Grant is a good back, but not a great back. He probaly is the best back they currently have. Yes Starks, carried the running attack during the playoffs. But he never really started a full season. That said, even Brandon Jackson had his chance, and packer fans found out he is not starting matieral. I fully believe Grant will start, and Green and Starks will be the backups with Kuhn as the fullback. No need for Brandon Jackson, or Quinn Johnson, and even Korey Hall. The running game will be fine. As for Nance he will be on the practice squad. Packers offense will demolish the the vikings, defense, and the packers defense will kill the vikings offense! Especially with minnesota most likely going with a rookie nobody as a qb.

GB – 3 peat. If they don’t , it’ll be from lack of desire and not talent. This team is loaded so the pressure to perform will increase dramatically from here.

This is really an ignorant thing to say. You don't know what each year will bring and what young team will break out. They will contend for the next 5 but to say if they don't win 3 in a row, something that hasn't been done since the Packers of the 60s, it will only be due to a lack of desire is just plain dumb.

Grant is a better back than Starks, hands down. More burst, more power. After watching starks I commonly thought of him as a poor man's Grant, with similar style but a little less speed and power. Starks should be kept as an insurance in case Grant goes down again, but having them split carries is really hurting the team as Grant should get the bulk of the carries if we want to maximize our running game.

That being said---a Grant + Starks 1-2 punch is still light years ahead of where we were when they were both off the active roster last year. Jackson + Kuhn just doesn't get the job done.
