DeMarcus Ware gets paid, despite lockout

Kevin Kolb, DeMarcus Ware AP

At least one player is making some good money during the lockout.

Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com reports that DeMarcus Ware received $6.8 million from the Cowboys in mid-March, after the lockout started.   Ware received the money because it was a deferred payment from his signing bonus and 2010 salary.

Watkins notes that Ware’s situation isn’t unique.  He cites the following players as those likely to receive payments during the lockout: Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork, 49ers tackle Joe Staley, and Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry.

Miles Austin is due more than $7 million in deferred money, but it isn’t due until the 2011 season was scheduled to start.

We tried to think of a way to spice up this story to have a larger point, but it’s just not happening.  Maybe Florio can come up with something when he awakes from his catnap.

Greg-I know as the number 2 guy, its your role to have to keep content coming on the site. However, as you guys have noted, your viewership is down during the lockout. While you’d like to think it was due to lack of free agency and player movement, part of it (a lot) has to do with your crappy articles. Step ya game up son, do stories on the new coordinators and schemes their brining to teams or something actually not wack. thanks

Don’t worry. Someone will misinterpret it and take care of that for you.

Here’s a larger point for you. The league has made several references to players who have publicly claimed they are enjoying their time off during the lockout. I also wouldn’t be surprised to hear similar comments from the league about how some players are still getting paid large amounts of money even with no football.
The league is doing this as a way to show that these big name players aren’t effected by the lockout. But it isn’t about the DeMarcus Wares and Peyton Mannings of the NFL who are the hardest hit. It’s the players who round out the bottom of the NFL rosters who are missing their paydays. It’s the players who are stuck in contracts with teams where they’re paid significantly less than they would get in an open market.
This is where I think the NFLPA* messed up the law suit. Can you really claim irreparable harm when your named plaintiffs include Tom Brady, Peyton Manning & Drew Brees? Those guys are already set for life. How about put some smaller names as the plaintiffs. Josh Cribbs, Brad Smith, Darren Sproles…names like that.
And the people who are suffering the most are the fans. It’s hard to sympathize with either side here, and the idea of losing all or part of a season due to their egos is nauseating.

There it is again! The pic of Kevin Kolb chasing ware with the ball. Is this how you save server space? All articles on the Eagles/Cowboys/Ware/Kolb use this pic?

I wish I could get a high paying job with the NFL knowing I don’t have to work hard for it like Bush
