One of the reasons I love sports is that
–compared to much of the real world–
they are a meritocracy. Our team wants
the BEST tight end, whether he’s white or black.
A racist club would soon not be competitive.

In 2003, Limbaugh brought HIS racist world
view to TV, framing McNabb’s slump as a
race issue. To NFL fans it had NOTHING to do
with race, and Limbaugh’s race views were shown to be out of touch, and the obese draft-dodger was shown the door.

I’m sad to see that so many in here are defending the racial angle that Limbaugh fabricated and
introduced to the McNabb issue.

But Limbaugh’s 2003 comments were really intended to be an attack on the media and not McNabb – and at the time Limbaugh made those comments, a pretty good case could be made for McNabb’s being overrated, as up to that point McNabb had never completed 60% of his passes in a season, had never averaged 7 yards per attempt in a season, and the Eagles had never ranked in the top half of the NFL in average passing yards per game with McNabb as their starting quarterback.

Then again, what was wrong with the media “wanting a black quarterback to succeed”? Was there anything wrong with wanting the Jamaican bobsled team to succeed in the 1992 Winter Olympics?

The point being that that which is unusual and bizarre tends to fascinate people – at least people with a modicum of intelligence and creativity; and since only one African-American QB has ever won a Super Bowl – and that was during a strike-shortened season, during which the QB in question had been benched, not once but twice – there was, and still is, a novelty factor present here.

By implying…I mean LYING that he is a slave, Adrian Peterson was insinuating that his white bosses were racist. While this does not make him necessarily a racist, is he not race baiting with those disingenuous, inflammatory remarks?

It’ll be a great day when race is not mentioned with regards to ANY accomplishment. When the Bears played the Colts in the SB a few years ago, was it not the MEDIA that made a big deal about Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy coaching the SB? Why did they make a big deal about it? Because they were black. I could have cared less. They’re two really good coaches who happened to be black. And anyone who says it IS a big deal is still hung up on race, which is why we never get past it.

This is what Rush initially was saying in 2003. The MEDIA made a big deal out of McNabb and maybe overrated him a little because he was black. I don’t know about the whole “because they want to see black QB succeed” quote, but McNabb was and still is overrated.

Oh, and Bernard Hopkins is a tool.

What IS this? As an Eagles fan, I couldn’t have cared less if McNabb was black, white, purple or just tanned. He was green, and I loved him when he pulled off miracles and despaired when he screwed up and threw up. He was exciting to watch, a class act under fire, and gave us what he had. Which wasn’t enough, in the end. But it didn’t have anything to do with his race or what neighborhood he grew up in. He was an Eagle, and a good one, and now he’s not. Let it go!

I cant believe im going to defend Rush Limbaugh but I was watching the show that day. He bashed the media because at the time the media was in fact giving a lot of hype to black QBs. If he has used Kordell Stewardt instead of McNabb Im not sure this would be an issue. Remember Kordell?? He was an aweful QB with one college highlight. The media was all over him because he was “Slash” and they were really trying to push him as a great new up and coming QB when in fact we all know he sucked!! The media was hyping him because he was black Thats just fact!! McNabb at the time was having an off year but until that year he was a good QB. Rush should have used Kordell no McNabb as his example………..I must shower now because I defended Rush!!

I will admit, Mcnabb was seriously overrated. Back during the eagles super bowl run, he was solid and put up nice numbers, but the media acted like he was the best qb ever. Really, their run was due just as much to Andy Reid and the eagles defense as it was to Mcnabb, and Tom Brady clearly showed he was the superior quarterback in the super bowl. It has nothing to do with being black, there have been good black qbs like Warren moon and Steve McNair. Now the media has another black eagles qb to overhype, so everything is all better again, right?

If such equality were a fact racists like Adrian Peterson and Jalen Rose wouldn’t be allowed in sports.
