Matthew Stafford may plan to play “16 games or more” but history indicates that’s not especially likely.

That’s why Shaun Hill is so valuable to the Lions as a backup quarterback, and his recent back surgery is of some concern. The good news: Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that Hill was already taking part in limited workouts with his teammates on Tuesday, only six days after back surgery.

Hill says he’ll be “game-ready” in 4-6 weeks and only wishes he got the surgery done earlier. Hill battled through a broken forearm and broken finger to start 10 games last year, with 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

We’d argue that Hill is one of the better backups in the league. Combine him with Stafford and Detroit’s quarterback position is in very good shape.

When was the last time you could say that?
