Urlacher says Bears, not Packers, are best team in NFC

2011 NFC Championship: Green Bay Packers v Chicago Bears Getty Images

Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher says he plays for the best team in the NFC, and the fact that the Packers beat the Bears in the NFC Championship Game and then won the Super Bowl isn’t going to change his mind.

I think we’re the best team in our conference,” Urlacher said during an appearance at an Albuquerque elementary school. “I know we’re not the Super Bowl champs like the Green Bay Packers. . . . We want to be the best in our conference and to be there, we’ve got to go through Green Bay.”

According to the Albuquerque Journal, Urlacher (who will turn 33 next week) is in great shape and working out regularly, and he says the only thing the lockout has changed for him is that he’s staying away from the Bears’ facilities longer than he has in the past.

“It’s a little longer, that’s all,” Urlacher said. “Longer than I’d like it to be. I’m still working out hard — just not with my teammates. That’s the biggest difference. I’m doing the same program I would be if I were at the facility.”

So just as Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk is doing his workouts on his own while the lockout is on, Urlacher is, too. And we’ll all just have to hope the lockout ends so the Packers and Bears can determine on the field whether Urlacher is right about which team is the best in the NFC.

We’ll see how they feel about that when they face Detroit – Who will win that division this year.

  2. simplesimon1 says: May 17, 2011 10:15 AM

The Bears are going to be fighting with the Lions this year for #2 in the division, let alone the best team in the NFC. After getting robbed by bogus calls in two straight games last year, I can see the Lions putting a major beat down on this team this year. The Bears are not that good.

  5. dramah says: May 17, 2011 10:20 AM

Does it really matter? Rex already informed the world that the Jets would win the Super Bowl so it’s really just a battle for #2. That said…lol Brian. The Packers own you.

  8. txbearmeat says: May 17, 2011 10:22 AM

Well then, Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher is wrong.

Seriously, it’s not very often you don’t lose 1 player to I.R., you play one of the easiest schedules in the NFL, you only truly win 2 tough games all year, and you get to the NFCCG.

The Bears are getting old, they have NO depth, they have a terrible WR corps, a bad OL, a terrible Secondary…. I smell 6-10 and rebuilding in 2011.

  9. calloustongue says: May 17, 2011 10:23 AM

Better check that guy for a concussion.

Maybe he’s about to take his baseline test and had to say something stupid so it wouldn’t look like he was faking it later.

  10. briman141 says: May 17, 2011 10:23 AM

Really Mr. Spermlapper thinks they’re better? How about they get a QB who doesn’t throw 4+ picks a game. What respect. Thanks ‘Lapper, you just made me remember why I hate the Bearly’s.

  11. purpleguy says: May 17, 2011 10:23 AM

I suppose it’s healthy for players to have the attitude that their team is the best, but come on, the Pack beat the Bears in the last game of the regular season, the NFC championship game, and won the Super Bowl. Urlacher must be working out with some peyote down there in New Mexico.

  12. txbearmeat says: May 17, 2011 10:24 AM

GB was always the better team in 2011 – in the first game penalties lost the game. And then all the injuries hit and it took GB about 4 games to figure out how to play with so many new guys.

  16. detlions says: May 17, 2011 10:29 AM

Im excited to see SUH , two hand push Cutlers head thru the turf. If the first game of the season wasn’t a blown call, the bears wouldn’t of even made the play-offs.

  17. briguy68 says: May 17, 2011 10:30 AM

I think Urlacher may have had one too many hits to the head.

As an Eagle fan, I say the Packers are the best team in football, period. If they didn’t have those 3 major injuries in the SB, they would have beat the Steelers with ease.

  18. sj39 says: May 17, 2011 10:30 AM

He needs to realize the Bears need either a very good QB or a much better team. Sure some great teams have won the Super Bowl with mediocre QB’s, Redskins with Doug Williams. Dilfer with the Ravens, Brady with the Patriots but for the most part you need a superior QB to win the big one.

  19. dramah says: May 17, 2011 10:31 AM

In related new, the MN Twins are the best team in baseball!

  20. smoothjimmyapollo says: May 17, 2011 10:32 AM

So let me get this straight. Green Bay beat Chicago twice including in the NFC championship. In Green Bay’s loss, the Packers outplayed the Bears and only an exorbitant amount of penalties by the Packers allowed the Bears to win. Since Aaron Rodgers became the starter, the Bears are 2-5 against the Packers. With no free agency to date and only the draft affecting the rosters, we’re looking at essentially the same teams as last year at the moment. The Packers offense ranked 9th in yards and 10th in points to Chicago’s 30th and 21st rankings. The Packers defense ranked 5th in yards and 2nd in points to Chicago’s 9th and 4th. Green Bay had a better turnover ratio. Chicago had the edge in special teams, but GB shut them down in week 17 and in the playoffs. So if the stats don’t back him up, and if the performance on the field isn’t backing him up, and if Jay Cutler is still their quarterback, how exactly is Urlacher thinking the Bears are a better team?

  21. jw731 says: May 17, 2011 10:32 AM

CNN is reporting that the entire state of Wisconsin has just disappeared from the map, it seems the Packers fans anticipated response to this “shot in the Dark”, by a man who paints his son’s toenails, has cause a nuclear reaction the like we haven’t seen since Hiroshima…More on this story as it progresses……..

  24. boisestatewhodat says: May 17, 2011 10:34 AM

New Orleans has the highest win % of any NFC team over the past 6 seasons…during that time, they’ve gone to the NFCCG twice and the super bowl once…winning of course! Sorry Brian but the Saints and the Packers are the class of the NFC…as a Saints fan (and a fair one at that), I’d say the Packers have the edge right now and they’re the champs…Packers, Saints and Falcons are the top three…in that order!

  25. 305phinphan says: May 17, 2011 10:35 AM

Really? Last time I checked the Bears had an opportunity to make sure that the Pack didn’t even make it to the playoffs in week 17 in Chicago. The Bears lost that game and the Pack got in. Then they meet again in the NFC Championship to see who will be going on to the Superbowl and once again in Chicago the Bears failed to beat them. So how in the world does Brian think that they are better than the Pack?

  26. rockinron2 says: May 17, 2011 10:35 AM

He is half right. The Bears D kept the Packers offense in check for 3 games (something NE, Pitt and ATL couldn’t do). It was the Bears offense that lost those 2 games.

  27. packerhq says: May 17, 2011 10:35 AM

Simple..look down and see that ring on your finger Brian ?
Yup you don’t have one ! LMAO

  28. packerrube13 says: May 17, 2011 10:37 AM

Right…. And what does he have to prove this point? Lost week 17 to GB, lost the NFCCG to GB, and GB won the Superbowl. So really, who is best in the NFC? The Saints and Falcons are better than them, as are the Eagles. Not to mention the Lions might even pass them this year.

    Urlacher is a tool.

  29. ilpackerbacker says: May 17, 2011 10:37 AM

This is hilarious. It was great seeing Brian on the local news the night of the NFC title game, telling everyone he will not root for Green Bay and he hopes they lose the Super Bowl.

Um, nice try, LOL. Go paint your son’s toenails and make him wear Pocahontas Underoos again. What a delusional dumbass. Your window is closed, buddy. Go find another hobby.

  30. 4sacroc says: May 17, 2011 10:37 AM

Urlacher MIGHT have been correct if he hadn’t allowed Aaron Rodgers to touch-tackle him on a possible game-changing INT in title tilt.

    That was SAD.

  31. chadmurdigan says: May 17, 2011 10:40 AM

Believing don’t make it so, Brian. You have Cutler; the Pack has Rogers.

Oops, so much for believing the Bears are the best.

  32. djrando7 says: May 17, 2011 10:43 AM

HMMMMMM………..Let’s see……….Bears have Jay “CRYBABY” Cutler as their QB, and Packers have Aaron Rodgers…..Lions have Matt Stafford…..Vikings have Ponder Me This…..I take the Pack as #1 in NFC North, Lions, Vikes, and tailing up the butt end…..Crybaby and “Needs to hang em up” Urlacher….

  33. danimalk82 says: May 17, 2011 10:43 AM

Urlacher is usually better than this, he’s starting to sound like Rex Ryan.

“Winners do it and losers talk about doing it.” Keep your mouth shut and let your play do the talking and don’t trip over QB arm tackles. With a chance to go to the big game the Packers came in your house and celebrated with the Halas trophy on your field. Talk about being the best in the NFC AFTER you beat the best in the NFC.

LMAO at the comments. Any player who does not have that outlook every game is one that I do not want on my team. I read it as confidence and a belief in himself and his team mates. How far will any team go if the players on it think they are second rate? High self esteem is necessary to be competitive and successful in any endeaver.

If you answered all of the above then you are correct. The Packers are built to compete for a Super Bowl for the next 5 years which is about 4 more years than Urlacher has left in his career.

  44. cheeseking1 says: May 17, 2011 11:20 AM

    Breaking News:
    *******************************************

The Chicago Bears have announced that Brian Urlacher has been placed on the disabled list indefinetely pending tests for post-concussion syndrome.

Bears medical staff were quoted as saying “Brian may still be suffering lingering effects of having been run over by James Starks and the Packers offensive line in the NFC Championship Game.”

  48. jtam963 says: May 17, 2011 11:31 AM

How is Urlacher over rated? Gimme a break, he has been the 2nd best MLB over the last ten years behind Ray Ray.

Bears had a good season with a makeshift O Line. Give them the pats or colts O line we would have won the championship. We will be better this year, watch and see. Bears controlled GB for a majority of games, just need offense to produce a bit.

  49. tformation says: May 17, 2011 11:32 AM

If you were Urlacher, would you rather have pissed at you? Bears fans or Packer fans?

Of course he’s going to say his team is the best in the division. Who wouldn’t? Ask this question to Adrian Peterson and he’ll say the Vikings. Ask it to the Suh, and he’ll say the Lions?

Man, this is a slow news day.

Like I said, I can’t wait for reader responses. It appears as though most of the commentors didn’t bother to read the whole article and just the title. Did you all miss the part where he said they have to go through the Packers? I remember hearing a lot of these comments last year about the Bears finishing last in the division. But I guess you’re all saying, “this year we mean it”! Ha Ha! Lion’s fans, come talk to me when your team finishes above .500! I know, I know, this is your year, for 3 years running. Bear Down!

  52. shaggytoodle says: May 17, 2011 11:57 AM

When reading the headline I was kinda of thinking Urlacher was a donkey. If you actually read what he said.

“I THINK we’re the best team in our conference,” Urlacher said during an appearance at an Albuquerque elementary school. “I know we’re not the Super Bowl champs like the Green Bay Packers. . . . We WANT TO BE the best in our conference and TO BE there, we’ve GOT TO GO through Green Bay.”

I actually have no problem with those comments. Its not Sexy Rexy crowning themselves he gives GB resepct and said to be the best you gotta beat the best.

Urslacker is delusional. Late in the season the Packers beat the Bears twice in a 4 week period, with the last game being played in Chicago and a trip to the Superbowl on the line. Maybe I’m delusional, but it would seem the Packers are the better team. In fact, the Bears will finish behind Detroit this year and not make the playoffs. Next year at this time Urslacker can then try to make the point that the Bears are actually better than the Lions…..and no one will agree with him then either.

Being a Packers fan, I can admit my obvious bias but I feel the Lions are poised to make a genuine leap over year’s past.
Their defense, at least on paper, is positively scary. Though I am not sold on Stafford they have the best wideout in football and what could amount to a very interesting rushing attack.

As for the rest of the conference, you can’t count out the Saints.
Easily better than the Bears in my opinion. Even though they stubbed their toe in the playoffs last year.

I realise Urlacher is just preachin’ to the choir and it’s nothing to get into a snit about.

Winning the final 2 games of the regular season against the 10-4 Giants, and the 13-2 Bears to get into the playoffs, then Beating the #1,2 and 3 NFC seeds on the road in the playoffs, then the #2 AFC seed in the Super Bowl is Lucky??? If you ask me or anyone else who knows any bit about football, you can say thats one of the greatest Super Bowl runs of all time…

I dont know how much more lucky a team could be than facing a team with in playoffs with a losing record.

Had the Steelers actually showed up for the Superbowl we would have been hoisting #7.
We also had major injuries for SB too but we didn’t play Steelers football….better team won that night.

    ^ what’s steeler football?
beating Mark Sanchez and looking dumbfounded when an Aaron Rodgers/Tom Brady led team puts up 30 + points?

Wow, I’m no packer fan, but this is some hardcore woulda-shoulda-coulda homerism.

Pack won and should have won that game. Take your lumps.

How is Urlacher over rated? Gimme a break, he has been the 2nd best MLB over the last ten years behind Ray Ray.

Bears had a good season with a makeshift O Line. Give them the pats or colts O line we would have won the championship. We will be better this year, watch and see. Bears controlled GB for a majority of games, just need offense to produce a bit.”

Give them a different Line??? OK how about just have the player all switch uniforms, then the Bears would have won too.

The Saints, Falcons,Eagles and Lions are all better than the Bears. Not to mention the Packers.
    Urlacher is waaau overrated.
The World Champion Green Bay Packers….

Oh, since Rex Ryan said he would have beaten the Packers, and now Urlacher, does it mean we have to turn in the LOMBARDI TROPHY.
    Go Pack

It’s great to be confident. However, I think Brian’s somewhat delusional here. Before I go on note I’m a Viking fan so I am unbiased as to who I think is better.

First of all, before you say you are better you have to prove you can beat the other team. That didn’t happen. The Packers (as much as it pains me to say this) are the best team in the NFL right now. 2 years ago I thought the Vikings had the best team in the NFL. After all they beat the Saints up and down the field. However, the bottom line is they didn’t beat them where it counted. The score! Therefore I could not claim they were the better team.

The Packers are very deep and have the capacity to build a dynasty. The Bears, not so much. In my opinion a lot of the Bear wins last year were by luck and let’s not forget about two of their wins last year. Remember? The “should have not wins” against the Lions. Sure, all teams get lucky now and then. However those two wins would have took them out of the playoffs if it weren’t for erroneious calls.

So Brian, as much as I admire you as a football player I think you are a bit delusional to be spewing this sentence.

stupid bears. stupid mother*#*$*#@$ bears. thanks to you, the packers made the playoffs. and thanks to you, the packers won the superbowl. this is all your fault, chicago.

i didn’t think it was possible for urlacher to be dumber than he looks…
