Panthers punter is not amused by jersey number talk

Baltimore Ravens v Carolina Panthers Getty Images

Jimmy Clausen got some attention a few weeks back when he said (with a smile) that he wasn’t going to easily give up his number (or job) to Cam Newton.

Panthers punter and NFLPA* rep Jason Baker, who has heard the issue brought up a few times locally, is tired of the topic.

“I certainly hope that the guy who takes the snaps this fall at quarterback is more interested in the playbook and running an offense than he is the shirt that he wears over his pads,” Baker told the Charlotte Observer.  “I’d like to win some games this fall.  It’s more fun that way.”

Awesome.  Baker could potentially get embroiled in this vital controversy because he wears No. 7. That’s the jersey Clausen reportedly wanted when he came to the team last year, but Baker wouldn’t give it up.

“I have no intent to change jerseys and haven’t been approached to do so,” Baker said.

We feel Baker’s pain.  Everyone is just a little crankier in a lockout.

Only time I’ve ever agreed with a punter.

I think punters should drink more, they’re more fun that way.

  3. jaypace says: May 19, 2011 6:51 PM

    You’re a fukin punter

I really can’t take much more of this top notch reporting.

    Friggin Punters………

  6. kneepadz says: May 19, 2011 6:58 PM

What a hypocrite. He says that he wants to win games and that the jersey number doesnt matter yet he doesnt want to give up his number. Just another reason why the panthers wont win more than 2 games this year. You can quote me on that

  7. benh999 says: May 19, 2011 6:58 PM

I didn’t even realize punters got permanent numbers. I always figured they grabbed a spare jersey from a cardboard box when suiting up for a game.

    Dear Cam Newton,
I’m a panthers fan, have been since 1995. I’ve lived through Frank Reich, Kerry Collins, Steve Buerlien, Chris Weinke, Rodney Peete, Jake Delhomme, Vinny Testeverde, Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen and now you…none of us Panther fans give a crap about what number you wear. And no, not because you’re the only African American qb on that list (so shutup Warren Moon). Learn your playbook from Dorsey and Weinke, learn how to be a pro and make throws from Favre, other than that don’t worry about a stupid number that doesn’t mean anything…wear 12 and shutup about it. The less I have to hear about anything from OUR PUNTER, the better.

  9. deadskinsforlife says: May 19, 2011 7:08 PM

The only punter that is cool is the guy in New England with a doctorate in biochemistry or whatever who’s name is Zoltan. Classic name.

All other punters, including this guy who takes life way to seriously, suck.

That being said, I wish someone had told me I could be making $1 mil a year kicking a ball in the air and pretending to try to tackle guys.

  10. broncobourque says: May 19, 2011 7:14 PM

If he thinks guys should worry about more important things than “the shirt they wear over their pads” then why would he be so against giving up the number? I’m not saying he should feel he has to give up the number but he can’t criticize Newton and Clauson for caring about their number while at the same time caring about it too much himself to give up his.

  11. prmpft says: May 19, 2011 7:16 PM

…and can afford to be cranky(?) if they are EXPENDABLE for something as small as “the shirt that he wears over his pads”?!

  12. brownsfn says: May 19, 2011 7:19 PM

Wow i have a new favorite player…since when did someone in the NFL have a rational thought??? WoW…

  13. duanethomas says: May 19, 2011 7:23 PM

Cut the punter. Clausen gets # 7 and Cam gets # 2. Problem solved.

  14. sieveslockeroom says: May 19, 2011 7:23 PM

So if it’s not a big deal, then why doesn’t the dang punter give up his number??

  15. eselv73 says: May 19, 2011 7:26 PM

Baker, just give Clausen #7 and everyone wins. JUST GO BACK TO #6, he used to wear it.
So he’s kind of being a douche (although why hasn’t Clausen approached him? – he wants to get paid by Cam).

I’m sure Cam is workin with his playbook a bit more. (Please…)

  16. lgbarn says: May 19, 2011 7:32 PM

Baker should just shut up. He a punter for heavens sake. The Panthers should just release Clausen and Baker and let Cam have whatever number he wants. Its not like the jersey number or players involved will help them win anyway.

  17. wherezwaldo says: May 19, 2011 7:55 PM

i believe the punter for the Chargers helped his team beat the Colts in the playoffs a few years back. :/

  18. blackbelt4d says: May 19, 2011 8:29 PM

    @madenatewell

Clearly you didn’t live through Rodney Peete if Cam Netwon is the only african american quarterback on that list.

  19. mike83ri says: May 19, 2011 8:44 PM

“I’d like to PLAY some games this fall. It’s more fun that way”

    Fixed.

  20. harleyrider1973 says: May 19, 2011 9:00 PM

Why should baker give up his number. It a team sport an every player is important right? Newton’s the new guy he should pick from what ever number are available.

Keep making predictions like that and you’ll be wearing knee pads. Bookies take no mercy and rug burn is a bit@h. You are a lo$er sir.

he’s a punter. he should stfu and the Panthers should cut him asap.

Your letter to Cam sounds like a typical fool who believes everything he/she reads on this site as FACTUAL

FYI, please realize when you’re being suck in by the media. CAM NEVER ASKED FOR NO DAMN #2..IF YOU WERE A REAL PANTHER’S FAN YOU WOULD HAVE WATCHED HIS INTERVIEW WHERE THE DUMB SPORTS WRITER ASKED HIM IF HE WAS GOING TO KEEP #2 LIKE HE DID AT AUBURN. HIS QUOTE WAS…”WE’LL SEE.”

He was also asked at the last minute to participate in a charity game on the Saturday after he was drafted to help out a team-mate. And keeping with the ESPN like mentality that is being passed off as mature journalism, instead of the focus being on Cam hang with his Panther’s teammate, it became more about a dumb number. All that because Cam was never given a number and someone simply put his Auburn # on the back of the his tee-shirt and he and Clausen showed up at the game with the same # 2.

See a real Panther fan would have figured that one out. Not someone like myself who don’t even give two whoots about the Panthers but it’s clear you’re who these sports folks enjoy brainwashing.

By the way, if you’re going to be mad at anyone, be mad at Jimmmy Clausen because he gave the media ammunition by responding to their assinine question about a damn number. He should known by no that these fools are BORED with themselves and are looking for anything to spin into a damn story and evenmore pit him against Cam.

And please your mentioning if Warren Moon was not necessary. Like your ass, he’s entitled to his opinion. But unlike you, he isn’t simply repeating whatever the media is spoonfeeding him.

  24. rockman1966 says: May 19, 2011 9:34 PM

Madenatewell, it must be humiliating to be called-out for saying Rodney Peete was not African-American. YOu are an idiot.

  25. tfbuckfutter says: May 19, 2011 9:39 PM

”I’d like to win some games this fall. It’s more fun that way.”

-The guy whose position unviversally has never tangibly contributed to a win in any way, but has probably contributed heavily to a loss or two.

  26. burntorangehorn says: May 19, 2011 9:43 PM

Let Cam Newton deal with it. Make Jimmy Clausen deal with it. Make them be adults and choose new numbers. If they can’t get past that, then they’re superstitious nitwits.

  27. hobartbaker says: May 19, 2011 10:29 PM

It is the Large Slimy Newt who is crapping in the fountain. Clausen and Baker have their numbers. Deal with it IMaGe, or buy #7 from the punter. Spending all that time in front of the mirror it will look like a #2 to THE ONLY PERSON WHO MATTERS.

  28. beatnik25 says: May 19, 2011 11:30 PM

    @tfbuckfutter

Baker has been one of the most consistent special team players in the league. Without him the Panthers defense probably would have stunk more this past season.

Its articles like this that prove there needs to be football. May God help us all.

  30. spungy says: May 20, 2011 7:57 AM

I think he should keep his number. The Panthers punter is probably on the field more than the quarterback anyway.

  31. bucsballer says: May 20, 2011 9:07 AM

Pretty sure peete was black my friend.

  32. winkeroni says: May 20, 2011 9:14 AM

If they would have kept Hunter Cantwell and cut Jimmy Clausen this would be a non issue.

  33. breeshasabush says: May 20, 2011 9:22 AM

    @whatswiththehate

every time u keep referring to yourself as a “real panther fan” I laugh a little bit harder. If I were a REAL PANTHER FAN, I BANG MY HEAD AGAINST THE WALL… Gus Ferrotte style!!

  34. fartography says: May 20, 2011 9:41 AM

What did Peyton Manning have to say about it?

  35. brock29609 says: May 20, 2011 9:57 AM

Simple solution. Make punters wear a big “P” and kickers a “K”.

Not sure why the league doesn’t allow 0, 00, 01, 02… and all the other double digits not worn.

  36. CKL says: May 20, 2011 1:07 PM

This story makes me smile for a lot of reasons.
In the Panthers QB derby I am rooting for Matt Moore (providing they re sign him which they likely won’t) who probably doesn’t give two pins what his # is.
The other two seem to be entitled, phonies.
