"Ultimately, I mean people want to have their football. A lot of people are starting to get hurt — people are losing jobs right now. It’s time to get it all figured out in my opinion, but nobody asks my opinion.”

I am intrigued by this statement. Yes, David Akers is a kicker, but he is a long-time veteran of the league and, from what I have heard, quite well respected by his peers.

So if David Akers doesn't feel like his opinion is worth anything, it makes you wonder what voice other players are having in all of this. Is there *any* consultation occuring between the NFLPA* leadership and the rank and file whom they represent? Or is this a virtual dictatorship where De Smith basically does as he likes, while attending a few token communication meetings with a handful of player reps?

clintonportisheadd says:May 25, 2011 9:18 AM

1) a star of Tom Brady level or 2) a player rep.
----------------------------------------------------

Please enlighten us to the above in more detail

1. Because you are a 'STAR", and thence well paid and, by extension, wealthy, does that somehow make your opinion more worthy of consideration than a less well known and lower paid person? Or, because Brady, Brees, Manning (here comes the race card) have opinions that matter more because they are white and the majority of players speaking out are black? In that case, the owners opinions are worth far more than a petty millionaire due to their wealth and high profile. (race doesn't matter to me in any case, just used it for purposes of eliciting a response to my questions..sorry if it is offensive to anyone except portishead)

2. What player reps are you talking about? There is no union, hence, no player reps. Or, are you in fact saying that there is still a union, just not being called one legally and publicly, and the de-certiification was in fact a sham and simply for the purpose of litigating instead of negotiating?

“There are many intelligent players, David Akers being one of them. The more they speak their mind, the better off they will be. They are not capitulating, they are giving their honest opinion. Lawyers do not care about the players.”

The Eagles transitioned Akers after the end of the season, an action that would have paid him handsomely.

He reacted as if they just burned his house down.

Yeah, he’s really smart. Totally admirable.

Give me a break.

Working conditions and pay must really be horrible for the poor downtrodden players if they are determined to litigate rather then negotiate. It is tragic they can’t make payments on those $100,000.00 cars."

Thats because you are a kicker. On most NFL teams that position falls somewhere between waterboy and ticket taker on the respect level.

"With Snelling and Akers going on the record and making their views known, it’ll be interesting to see what the NFLPA* does about it."

When you have 1600 members (whether its the NFLPA, your local Tea Party group, or a youth soccer league) you inevitably will find yourself having to deal with a few fringe characters. The only way I would pay any attention to what a player said about the owner imposed lock out was if that player was 1) a star of Tom Brady level or 2) a player rep.

Anything else is just noise...

Guess they should have selected someone with ties to the game and a vested interest in the future of the league instead of a lowlife lawyer who only has ties to the courts and doesn't care about the game or the player's long term interests.

Fire DeMoron and get someone who has the player's best interests in mind instead of their own grandstanding agenda and the deal will get done quickly.

As a Giants fan I don't agree with comments made by Eagles very often, but I agree 100%. We need more of this from the players.

Overthrow this idiot De Smith already!

Well, we've gone almost 5 months since the end of the NFL season with now countless numbers of meetings, conferences, brain storms, telephone calls and emails used to try and resolve this battle royal o' greed that the owners and dumb-a$$ DeSmith have created. And now a kicker and a back-up running back want the season to start... wow, I didn't know that it was going to be THIS easy!
Haven't heard a THING from T. Brady, and this whole collective bargaining fiasco has his very name tied to it. Quit being your wife's b1tch and grow the church bells that Snelling and Ackers seem to have and voice your freakin' opinion.

We are not stupid mike. Yall are posting pro-owner articles then yall are answering them yourself. Ha Ha. The owners had a deal. They opted out. They want what all rich people want, "more". The players want to play football and earn their living like everybody else. The players deserve every penny they get. Without our pro players we have no football. The average man like myself couldn't sustain one pro football hit, not one. Much less an entire season of hits. I've lost alot of respect for PFT for supporting the greedy owners. Yea, players are greedy too, but they are the ones out there taking the punishment and putting fans in the seats. I never attended one football game for the owners. But like my daddy always said, "son, never feel sorry for a millionaire". So i don't. And that includes the rich players because not all of them are millionaires. But i do miss football! Geaux Saints!

It’s time to get it all figured out in my opinion, but nobody asks my opinion.”

Thats because you are a kicker. On most NFL teams that position falls somewhere between waterboy and ticket taker on the respect level.

As Peyton Manning would said-"Pay no attention to this idiot kicker".

I think if more players spoke this way, the players would get more sympathy, even from fans of this so called owner friendly website.

I wonder how many players put this in the hands of De Smith at the end of the season and then tuned it all out. Now, that the football itch has started, it will be interesting to see if more players start pushing to get a deal done.

I believe the only way that a deal will get done is for the players to change their representative in the negotiations. D. Smith has talked himself into a corner and his ego will not let him back track and make a sensible deal for both sides.
