The Jets have experienced a lot of heartbreak lately. To help change that trend, Rex Ryan spoke to the Godfather of work stoppages in the NFL coaching community.

“I called Joe Gibbs,” Ryan said at a meeting with prospective Jets business partners Wednesday, via the Jets’ website. “When they went through some work stoppages, the last two times the Washington Redskins won two Super Bowls. So I figured that would be a good guy to call.”

The lockout will provide a unique challenge to coaching staffs. Those that are smart enough to adjust and think on their feed in unusual circumstances will be rewarded.

Ryan said Gibbs gave him some ideas and he has followed them “to a tee.” It would’t be a surprise if one of those pieces of advice was to pick the brain of other coaching minds. Ryan and the Jets have hosted a handful of coaching veterans to discuss certain subjects.

Ryan will pick Gibbs’ brain in person when they meet up in the coming days.
