The Gruden-to-Columbus talk already begins

Jon Gruden AP

Well, we’d been looking for an NFL hook to the stunning-but-not-shocking decision of Ohio State coach Jim Tressel to resign.  Thanks to Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com, we’ve found one.

Amid rumors that former Florida coach Urban Meyer will be the new coach of the Buckeyes after the 2011 season, there’s a name with strong NFL connections that could enter the fray.

Yes, Jon Gruden.

Freeman thinks that Gruden will be interested, even if everyone involved issues consistent denials.  Although Meyer’s accomplishments at Florida make him a no-brainer, Meyer’s on-again, off-again health problems could make him a less-than-ideal option for a program that prides itself on year-in, year-out consistency.  Since Woody Hayes threw a haymaker at Clemson linebacker Charlie Bauman in the 1978 Gator Bowl, the Bucks have had only three coaches:  Earl Bruce, John Cooper, and Tressel.

So, in the end, the primary factors in choosing the next coach at Ohio State likely will be a genuine willingness to stick around for the long haul — and the coaching skills and abilities to do so.

You mean the same Mike Freeman who assumed last week that Peyton Manning was being silent cause he was self-centered on his commercials??? Only for us to find out the next day was his silence was because of neck surgery???

That was that “awesome” reporting by Mike Freeman. And he wonders why we don’t put much stock in his work.

That scumbag scool doesn’t deserve Gruden.

Hopefully that pay for play school, run by a group of corrupt liars will get the Death Penalty.

There is more scandel and infractions that have not been uncovered yet. Any respected coach should steer clear of that place until all the snakes have been fired and the penalties handed down

OSU should make a very strong push for TCU coach Gary Patterson and just eat whatever money they have to to make it happen.

yeah gruden has no interest in going back to the NFL……where do you people find your logic? OH wait….your liberals. that says a lot.

Let’s not get too carried waway here. Interim coach Luke Fickell is a former Buckeye Captain. As CFT and numerous other sites have stated Fickell is a hot coaching commodity who should already be the HC somewhere in major College Football. This will be the biggest and most critical tryout of his life. With strong success Fickell will be you next permanent head coach of The Ohio State University.

Why would you want to coach in todays college athletics? College athletics is so corrupt and the NCAA keeps trying to blame everyone but themselves.

“Mike Freeman is one of the hardest working journalists in all of sports and Thee Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the premier universities in the country. This will no doubt be a tough decision for me”

    Jon Gruden

Mike, instead of feeding the monster, why don’t you use your platform to kill any and all ‘Gruden is going back to school’ stories, because you and I and everyone else that comments knows Gruden isn’t going anywhere but back to the NFL (next season).

Gruden is content to continue collecting the Glazer’s Tampa Bay money on top of his fat ESPN contract. If I remember my numbers correctly, the man is pulling in over $10 million per season (combined Tampa/ESPN money), and he’s going to give all of that up to coach a college team that could be faced with investigation and/or a continuing scandal?

    Not a chance.

This is what will happen, it’s predictable and boring and was always the plan from the day Gruden was canned by the Bucs; Johnny will provide commentary for MNF (assuming of course there is a season of games to be analyzed), collect his Tampa Bay money and pick his coaching spot for the following season. From there, Gru will ink a big money contract and hopefully will be able to co-exist with his GM, which for his sake will not be Bruce Allen. If he ends up re-united with Allen, in four or five years we can watch this entire process repeat itself – what fun!

With Tressel resigning, maybe now Terrell Prior can go to the supplemental draft…..

Every college player deserves, and is going to take benefits. Wether the coaches know about it or not, that’s a different story.

This is the same Jon Gruden who we know wins with skilled veterans but can’t develop young quarterbacks. Sounds perfect for the college game, doesn’t he? Oh well. At least he can teach them more creative ways to drop the F bomb into everyday conversation. Their teachers should certainly appreciate that.

gruden. meyer. this speculation may be fun, but it’s silly for anyone to take it seriously. no top flight coach is going to touch the job until the ncaa hands down its punishments for tressel’s coverup. the penalty phase could get ugly.

    How true!

Can’t you just see Gruden working with kids?
I’ve seen some crazy things in my life, but I would bet this won’t be one of them.

No way Gruden could successfully coach in college.

Always some idiot out there who thinks his political views are second to non and thinks that a football forum is a place to let everyone know how superior he is. I have news for you…you are not smart or clever and both parties stink.

    Now back to football…

I think Gruden has changed a lot since his NFL coaching days. Witness his highly acclaimed school for rookie QBs. People can change and learn from old mistakes.

I bet there are plenty autographed copies of “The Winner’s Manual” for sale in Columbus right now lol. I think overall Tressel is a good person but he really really used poor judgement in this case. Have fun in the UFL, Pryor.

Who would WANT to coach at THE Ohio State Community College anyway? Since they loved ole Sweater Vest so much, considering his recent actions, perhaps they should pursue Urban Meyer Sr afterall, Jr. [Jim Tressel] learned how the tough handle business from him OBVIOUSLY

  20. johnnicholas14 says: May 30, 2011 5:05 PM

Charlie Bauman was not a linebacker; he was a nose tackle.

Ohio State is the premier coaching job in all of football. If OSU calls the Patriots Belichick answers on the first ring.

    Go Buck.

Gruden would do well with the Bengals……..

Who wouldn’t want a job at one of the winningest programs in college football year after year. No doubt, by far the greatest fan base in the nation. The candidates will be coming out of the woodwork to get a shot at this opportunity. It will more than likely be Urban Meyer, he used to have a pic of Woody Hayes in his office, and recently purchased a home in the Columbus area. Check the facts Nerds. And fear the Nut, the Buckeye Nation will rise from the ashes soon.

Gruden does NOT need to step back in go in the college ranks. He WILL be an NFL coach again and hopefully it will be in the next two years. He is too good of a coach to have to deal with the recruiting fight which is what determines who competes for the BCS. In college football, the best coaches are the best recruiters.

Was in Columbus 6 weeks ago. Was told that Urban Meyer recently bought a house there and would be the OSU coach next year. If that’s true, then Luke Fickell is auditioning for his next job staring riiiiiight now.

  27. endzonezombie says: May 31, 2011 1:50 AM

So your rumor is that Meyer was planning to replace Tressel over 6 weeks ago?

  28. Blogger Patrol says: May 31, 2011 8:02 AM

23chameleons – Fickell won’t be there after this coming season, period! Nobody from the Tressel regime will be retained!! Where did you get that Meyer garbage from, the local bar at 2 AM? figures
