@macjacmccoy

I highly doubt thats the case. The leader already came out and said there may have been some communication errors with getting the NFLCA intentions across.

I seriously doubt coaches got together at a meeting and voted in favor of this and are now back tracking, simply due to Keenans word selection. He said “protesting”, meaning the decision wasnt made by the coaches but the powers that be.

No they didnt . The only team they said that they had communication problems with were the Redskins. Anyway it still took a majority of the teams 2 weeks to come out against the brief. If most them didnt know about it then they would have made a statement against it right away. That wasnt the case.

ROFL ... you are trying way too hard, honey. Mike's not the first person on PFT to correct me on an issue. I'm delighted to know he's reading the comments when he gets the chance, and appreciate that he took the time to provide that information in response to me. Now I'm even more curious about the NFLCA since the organization also represents retired coaches. I'd like to know how Parcells, Shula, Cowher, and others feel about that filing in support of the antitrust suit.

Saying "Thank you. I stand corrected" isn't exactly being put in a corner. I feel no shame in being wrong or making a mistake and owning up to it. The shame is in slinking off or throwing tantrums when you're checked ... you know, like the lil boys do. :D

This is sad. Even if the coaches really disagreed with the brief, they most likely wouldn't go through the trouble of making a public stink about it. The fact that they are speaking out publicly against the brief can only mean the owners (and their lawyers) are pressuring them to. It's too bad the coaches don't have a union. They could use one about now.

How is it there is so much pro-owner sentiment on this site when the majority of fans nationwide are siding with the players in this dispute? Just an absolutely unrealistic and overwhelming split for the owners in these comments.

Again, (because saying this previously obviously deserved deletion) I believe if Keenan's organization truly represented the coaches, they wouldn't have filed anything. It's hard to imagine the coaches wanted to step into this mess.

Besides, it was extreme presumption that Kennan did not feel the need to do anything more than simply sending out an email. That would be ridiculous if that is truly all he did.

Here's the first line of the NFLCA brief to the Eighth Circuit.

"The National Football League Coaches Association (‘NFLCA’) is a nonunion voluntary association that represents the interests of coaches and assistant coaches currently employed by the thirty-two individual National Football League (‘NFL’) teams, as well as many retired coaches formerly employed by those NFL teams.”

You shouldn't include the Saints on that list since they aren't NFLCA members. In fact, you should specify exactly which coaching staff are NFLCA members because it's irrelevant whether nonmembers endorse the brief.

And more accurately, these coaching staffs say they weren't aware of the brief. That doesn't make it true. I think Kennan completely mishandled this situation, but believe his assertion that he sent out an e-mail notice before filing the brief. It's too easy to prove. Whether they read it is another matter.

re: "The dozen or so coaching staff that have now put out statements against the brief a week after the fact probably did so bc of ownership pressure and not bc they didnt agree with or know what the NFLCA was doing. "

I don't think it's ownership pressure but more likely coaches who don't want to piss off their bosses. Not wise when coaches are getting laid off etc. Who knows for sure but the redskins did say that snyder didn't tell them to do it. But then again, Snyder is a sniveling, whiny little Bi$^# so I don't really buy that. Couldn't Keenan produce emails/letters of support if he actually got support from the coaches? Haven't seen any yet.

I think De Smith, English, Kessler/whoever told him "it's no big deal, just file it, it will help coaches" and he did it. He had no idea what a scandal it could become or how he had been manipulated. Just my opinion.

I researched Larry Keenan and to be honest he seems like a stand up guy that really wants to protect coaches. It therefore looks like he is being manipulated by NFLPA legal people. If you listen to some of his interviews he sort of sounds like a naive kid caught in a hurricane.

Personally I think these lawyers are manipulating honest players and guys like Keenan. The facts are that he didn't disclose the relationship with the NFLPA including using the NFLPAs phones, offices, and lawyers and he probably didn't get confirmation from many (most?, any?) of the teams when he filed that court document.

The only question I am unsure about now is did he get pushed into doing it by NFLPA lawyers and gullibly went along with it with the honest intention of helping coaches or was he "in on it" so to speak. My impression is that he is just like a lot of the players, they believe they are doing the right thing and have good intentions but they are getting manipulated by De Smith and Kessler, etc.

It seems to me there are players out there who like Brees who really seem to buy into De Smith's "this is war!, are you going to fight?" B.S. I think these players are getting manipulated. It's easy to grow hate and fear and De Smith is good at it IMO.

And then there are players who seem to be pawns of Kessler and De Smith. Chester Pitts, who's agent is Andrew Kessler, Jeffrey Kessler's son, is an example of that type.

Then there is a third type who look at it objectively and seem to want to negotiate. If we could get these types in the room with moderate owners like Kraft and zero lawyers, then we would have football. O.k. I've spent too much time on this, but's it's been educational...

Come on do you really believe that the 15 coaching staffs that have said they knew nothing about the NFLCA brief really knew nothing about it? I highly doubt it.

Right after the brief was submitted their were a few teams coaches that came out right away and said they did not agree to or support what the NFLCA said. Those few staffs are believeable. These other staffs though including the Eagles coaches seem like rats trying to escape a sinking ship. They were fine with taking the ride when they felt like the majority was with them but once they saw other coaches who werent initially against it start distancing themselves from the brief they put out a statement against it as well.

The dozen or so coaching staff that have now put out statements against the brief a week after the fact probably did so bc of ownership pressure and not bc they didnt agree with or know what the NFLCA was doing. When the brief came out and those few teams who were against it made there statements guys like Woody Johnson and Jeffrey Lurie probably went to Ryan and Reid and asked them if they knew about it and if not why they havent made a statement against the brief like the other coaches. Pretty much forcing them to either make a statement or tell the owners that they are against them .

These conversations between owners and coaches probably happened day 1 and it took nearly 2 weeks for most of the 15 teams to speak out against the brief. That right there should tell you they werent against it bc if they were they would have came out and said it right away to let their owners know they are with them.

But they didnt. They waited and only put out a statement once they saw other teams start to waiver..

---------------------

The absurd 2/34 thumbs up/thumbs down ratio on this totally reasonable comment pretty much solidifies my theory (and the feeling of many others) that management shills are taking to pft to attempt to sway public opinion.

2-34 ... seriously? I've seen Nazi sympathizers get far better reception in online message boards.

What a crock.

I highly doubt thats the case. The leader already came out and said there may have been some communication errors with getting the NFLCA intentions across.

I seriously doubt coaches got together at a meeting and voted in favor of this and are now back tracking, simply due to Keenans word selection. He said "protesting", meaning the decision wasnt made by the coaches but the powers that be.

Players Association director DeMaurice Smith visits Seahawks

Posted by Danny O'Neil

DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, met with the Seahawks on Monday, part of his criss-cross tour around the league to speak with the players on each team.

I'll be posting a summary of an interview with Smith did with media after he spoke with the players. I did want to post one note, too, that Larry Kennan, director of the Coaches Association, was also present at the visit.

According to Kennan, Seahawks assistant coaches were told not to meet with Smith. Smith and the NFL Players Association do not represent the coaches, who are not unionized, but he had spoken with assistant coaches in previous stops."

From the New York Times:

By MIKE FREEMAN
Published: September 27, 1998

Just over a year ago, officials from the National Football League Coaches Association, angry at what they thought was unfair treatment by the owners, met with Jeffrey Kessler, perhaps the most renowned sports antitrust lawyer in the country, in a hotel ballroom in Indianapolis. The topic of conversation? The N.F.L. assistant coaches were considering suing the league for antitrust violations….

Eventually the idea fizzled because the assistants were worried that a lawsuit would hurt their careers. Also, it would have taken a large six-figure retainer just to hire Kessler, and the lawsuit itself would have cost $3 million. Kessler said he had spoken with assistant coaches in the association, but he had no further comment.

Now, Larry Kennan, the respected longtime assistant coach, has become the director of the association...

That right there should tell you they werent against it bc if they were they would have came out and said it right away to let their owners know they are with them.

But they didnt. They waited and only put out a statement once they saw other teams start to waiver..
