Eagles, Rams the early favorites to land Plaxico

plaxburress1 AP

With Plaxico Burress out of prison and free to sign with any team as soon as the lockout ends, the speculation is mounting about where he might end up.

It is just that — speculation — but without much other NFL news going on at the moment, there’s a lot of interest in where Burress will go. Bodog.com is actually accepting bets on where Burress will end up, and the Eagles are the betting favorites.

That’s not a surprise: Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has said he’d like to play with Burress and help him make the same prison-to-NFL adjustment that Vick himself successfully made, and one of Burress’s friends and former teammates, Brandon Jacobs, has said he thinks Burress is heading to Philly. However, there have also been reports throwing cold water on the idea of Burress as an Eagle.

Jacobs has also said he thinks Burress might return to the Giants, although most observers don’t view that as likely.

If Philadelphia isn’t Burress’s landing point, St. Louis might be. Burress and Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo were with the Giants at the same time, and the Rams would like to add a veteran receiver.

The Jets, always looking for talented veteran receivers, are expected to inquire about Burress.

Although Dwayne Wade, of all people, has weighed in saying Burress should be a Bear, that is not considered likely.

Other teams that have been mentioned and dismissed as potential suitors for Burress include the Patriots and Steelers.

This is just a bunch of crap……No one knows where he is going, you just have a bunch of media pundits who when he does sign, wants to be the first on Twitter to say……see, IIIII was right…..And besides after the gayest manhug known to man that Rosenhaus laid on him yesterday, i dioubt he wants any publicity now………that was awkward…..

“To land him”??? Like this is some kind of big score?
Plaxico Burress right now is worth MAYBE a 4th round pick. You fools.

Plax doesn’t make a ton of sense for the Eagles. We’re already set at the first 3 WR spots (DJax, Maclin, Avant) and with the shortened camps to prepare for the season (hopefully), the Birds need to spend their time focusing on their O-line, and defense.

Lets see how long until he shoots himself in the leg again!!

  5. chapnastier says: Jun 7, 2011 10:47 AM

Why don’t you just mention every team in the league since there is no solid evidence of any team even being interested.

You can take the diva out of New York but you can’t take New York out of the diva!

Plax was sporting a philly hat upon his release. Djax, Maclin, Avant, Burress, Cooper are the 5 wrs on the squad if that happens. He could def help in the red zone immediately… so much talent at wr on that team already… love it.

Something tells me Steve Spagnuolo – a big “chemistry” and “character” kind of guy – wouldn’t sign Burress if his life depended on it. There are going to be PLENTY of WR’s available in free agency (Whenever that actually begins…), and he’ll want to make that team younger. Why would he want a 34-year-old WR who hasn’t played a down in the NFL in almost 3 seasons?

Spags wouldn’t want his young franchise QB to be paired up with a sulking WR who yells at his QB (Remember the Titans/Giants game with Pacman’s INT and all the accusations of Burress giving up on a ball, as well as the following tackle?). It’s not as if Spagnuolo ran the offense in NY – he doesn’t exactly have a history with Burress on a professional level, other than letting Corey Webster line up against him in practice.

These rumors and speculations are pointless right now. He could just as easily go to the Titans, Cardinals, 49ers, Seahawks, Jets, Dolphins, Texans, Vikings, Redskins, Bengals, Browns, Bears, etc, etc… if the Rams had the choice of getting a young, quality WR like Holmes, Rice, or Vincent Jackson, they’ll take any of them over a 34-year-old malcontent whose best days are behind him.

And make no mistake about it: he’ll want $3-5M, I guarantee it. Where does a $5M/year WR who would NOT start in Philly AND doesn’t play special teams fit in on the Eagles? He wouldn’t. Stop this already – he could end up anywhere.

    Please be the Rams, please.

I would imagine that Spagnoulo having been in NY at the height of Burress’ selfish antics likely precludes the Rams from being interested.

I’d love for him to be on the eagles but he’ll probably go to the Rams so he can start

  12. hail2tharedskins says: Jun 7, 2011 11:05 AM

Bradford and Burress? That should make for a nice combo.

  13. krow101 says: Jun 7, 2011 11:18 AM

You have to figure that Plax will go where the money is. He’s got a couple years left … 3 at best … and needs to make the most of them.

It’s also likely that the top bidding team(s) will expect him to start. So clubs with good receiving units are unlikely suitors. They’ll be out-bid by more desperate franchises.

The question comes down to not just who wants him … but who can offer him the most snaps.

Based on that, the Rams and Jets look like the contenders to me.

  14. dan39564 says: Jun 7, 2011 11:26 AM

He can’t go to Philly, part of his early release probably says he shouldn’t associate with Known Felons!

  15. steeltiger34 says: Jun 7, 2011 11:31 AM

Would like to see him come back to Pittsburgh. i know it is not likey. I think the rams and bradford could really use this guy. they should make a serious push for him. Burress, Clayton and the rook that got hurt in preseason last year would be good. Send Danny Anecdotal packing!

  16. homelanddefense says: Jun 7, 2011 11:35 AM

how good can he be? I know he is out of prison and should be highly motivated but lets face facts he will be 34 when the season starts.

A 34 yr old WR who hasnt played ball for a few years isnt exactly a good thing. I hope he has learned from his mistakes and cleans up his life, but I dont think he will be all that good.

I know Vick was similar but he was in his twenties when he got out and it still took a year for him to regain form.

  17. dbellina says: Jun 7, 2011 11:36 AM

Someone made a valid point on your previous post about Plex landing in Philly. I don’t think he would be allowed to unless he gets special permission. Convicted felons aren’t allowed to hang out or work together. It’s a parole violation.

  18. hwentworth says: Jun 7, 2011 11:37 AM

Philadelphia will sign him because they do silly, silly things.

  19. schmitty2 says: Jun 7, 2011 11:46 AM

Spagnuolo doesn’t like veteran equipment managers so it’s doubtful he wants a WR just out of jail and hasn’t played for a few years

  20. hobartbaker says: Jun 7, 2011 11:46 AM

Plax seems to be stuck on 8′ x 8′ routes since he left prison.

  21. dwoofer says: Jun 7, 2011 11:47 AM

Cardinals won’t sign him because of the goody-goody image the Bidwills attempt to maintain.

  22. bucs1723 says: Jun 7, 2011 11:50 AM

    Oh cheddar bob…..

  23. pastorinisflak says: Jun 7, 2011 11:57 AM

Surely he will get another shot. Maybe he can play another year or two and go out with a bang…

  24. 4gone says: Jun 7, 2011 12:07 PM

I have actually heard that Plax is teaming up with Randy Moss and T.O. and they are “taking their talents” to South Beach. I smell Superbowl.

  25. scubasteve4930 says: Jun 7, 2011 12:14 PM

The eagles dont need any more WR. Hes going to st.louis or washington…mark my words

Seconded. I’m in favor of just about anything that damages the Rams in some way.

  27. SmurfJuice says: Jun 7, 2011 3:13 PM

Hmm… If I had absolutely no WR talent, and a good $15M in cap room to burn..

I’d be intrigued at the possibility of having T.O, Burress, Moss, and/or Chad Johnson on my team. All the “rejects” come together for one last shot at a title. I’m sure the four of them combined could put up numbers worthy of two decent WRs.

Rams already have 2 WRs drafted this year in Pettis and Salas, Avery coming back from injury, Clayton expected to re-sign and who played well when he was healthy last season and does have a Brandon Lloyd type build which should be great in Josh McDaniels offense, Amendola, Gibson, DX, Gilyard, and possibly even Laurent Robinson coming back (depending on restricted FA rules for next season), I’m pretty sure that’s 8 players and honesty, all of the 9 would be better than Plax. I definitely thought Plax got a raw deal in NY on the gun case, but that’s a whole different story. There’s no way I want him on the Rams, there’s no room for him. Salas, Pettis, Amendola, Clayton, DX, and Avery will be the 6 Rams receivers. No need for Plax.
