Report: Eagles lukewarm on Asomugha

N. Asomugha1

The signs have pointed this offseason towards Philadelphia making an aggressive run at Nnamdi Asomugha.

The team has a gaping hole at cornerback, they have been aggressive signing free agents in the past, and Asomugha would make for a great complement to Asante Samuel.

That all makes sense on paper, but Clark Judge of CBSSports.com writes the Eagles aren’t that interested in reality. He cites those close to the team who say Philly is “indifferent” towards Asomugha because of his anticipated pricetag and his skill set as a “press cornerback who plays only the right-cornerback position.”

Hmmm. The Eagles need a press cornerback, so it’s odd to hear it like it’s a bad thing.

Andy Reid also called Asante Samuel a “left cornerback” the day they signed him, so a preference for a side hardly seems like a deal breaker. ESPNBoston.com’s Mike Reiss tells us that Samuel primarily played the left side in New England; 72% of Samuel’s starts came there.

Judge also says that Asomugha’s age (30) may partly scare the Eagles away.

“From what I gather, the Eagles respect and admire Asomugha; they just don’t think he’s the right guy for them,” Judge writes.

That may be true, but we’re still not sure what to make of this report. It’s possible the Eagles are just trying to change the narrative that they are the favorites to land Asomugha this summer.
