The Miami Dolphins have quietly worked out together in a big team setting perhaps more than any other squad this offseason. They started early and haven’t let up; it doesn’t hurt so many Dolphins live in Miami year-round.
Chad Henne’s position in the franchise was tenuous as last season closed, but the lockout may oddly help to solidify his standing. Andrew Carter of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel writes Henne has shown more leadership this offseason.
“You know, coming from Michigan I was kind of that guy — the leader,” Henne said. “And now it’s kind of stepping into that role again and, for me, it’s just a new experience and a lot of fun for me to be around the guys.”
The Dolphins are going to add a veteran quarterback to the mix. But Henne got a big head start by getting a playbook early and helping to learn the offense with his teammates.
“Chad has taken the reigns here and it’s been really good,” coach Tony Sparano said. “I think [it will] probably be really good for his teammates to see him in that kind of environment doing that. [Henne’s leadership is] something that I see. I’ve seen it in the office. I’ve seen it on the practice field. But when it’s him by himself in that situation, that’s been good for him.”
This is probably Henne’s last stand as a starting quarterback in Miami. It’s one that may have never developed without the lockout.
