Rivers thinks being “humbled” will be good for Chargers

San Diego Chargers v Cincinnati Bengals

Philip Rivers and the Chargers have done the trendy Super Bowl pick thing. They’ve entered the playoffs as a No. 1 seed and finished the season on long winning streaks. None of it has worked.

The way Rivers figures it, perhaps it’s a good thing the team is coming off such a poor year in 2010.

“This offseason might be good for us,” Rivers told humble NFL Network host Rich Eisen via NFL.com. “There’s always been a lot of hype surrounding our team, whether it be people picking us to go to the Super Bowl or talking about how talented we are. That’s all kind of gone away. We ought to be humbled and hungry and ready to get back out there.”

2010 was the most disappointing for the Chargers since Rivers took over as a starter. Their defense has questions, but the offense should be healthier and as explosive as any in football in 2011.

Despite last season’s struggles, I still consider the Chargers one of the favorites for the Super Bowl. That will probably be the case for most of Rivers’ prime. (Sorry, Philip.)
