Quintin Mikell on life as a free agent: “We’re so deep in the lockout I don’t even care”

For free agents like Quintin Mikell, waiting during the lockout has been the hardest part.   Mikell says he’s moved past the frustration stage at this point, and is just trying to stay ready.

“It’s been crazy [this offseason] but I’m not even concerned about it anymore,” Mikell told the Philadelphia Daily News over the weekend. “We’re so deep in the lockout I don’t even care. I’m just worried about staying in shape and making sure I’m ready to go.”

Mikell said he’d love to return to the Eagles, but wasn’t sure what the team wanted to do.  They drafted safety Jaiqwan Jarrett in the second round this year, so we have a pretty good idea they will be willing to let Mikell, 30, go elsewhere.

There should be a nice market for Mikell, who has long been an underrated player in Philly.  Teams like the Cowboys, Bucs, Jaguars, and many others will be looking for experienced safety help this offseason.

  1. Just as an aside. A lot of teams may see xtra value in their FA’s given the need for folks who already know the system. This may bode well for those who don’t want to leave, but… .

    Cheers, BostonTm

  2. He’s solid and has stepped up in some big situations, but he’s not great. He would be a real asset on a team that already has multiple playmakers on D.

  3. Those bums Landry & Otogwe wouldn’t stand a chance if he came to the Skins. Worst duo in the league.

Was this your rationale for including Washington in this discussion, Greg?

  4. We will miss Mikell, but he could never fill the shoes that Dawkins left.

Texans would be a team in need of a safety

  5. I think letting Mikell go will be a bigger mistake then letting Dawkins go. Im no way saying Mikell was a better player then Dawk throughout his career. But he does have more high quality years left then Dawkins did when his contract ended.

Also when Dawkins left the team still had plenty of veteran Eagles players left to fill the gap when he was gone. One of those guys being Mikell. Now if Mikell leaves the only guy left will be Trent Cole. Trent Cole is a great player but not really the leader type. With all the changes made to the defense this year bc of their poor play and the fact that they wont have the same time to prepare like years before bc of the lockout letting a guy like Mikell go possibly be the dumbest player decision they have made in years.

The only thing good about this lockout is the longer it goes on the better chance there will be that the Eagles will bring Mikell back.

  6. Cincinnati is in the market for a safety…….and a running back and a quarterback and a cornerback and a etc., etc.
