Carolina’s Steve Smith briefly considered retirement when wife was ill

Steve Smith of the Panthers has had a lot on his mind this offseason that is completely unrelated to trade rumors.

Speaking at his football camp Friday, Smith said that he briefly considered retirement when his wife was ill this offseason, according to Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette. Smith said it was a “scary time” and they believed his wife had Lupus, but she is fine now and he plans to play in 2011.

Cam Newton is in attendance at the camp lending a hand.  A camper asked him if he’ll be better than Jake Delhomme.

“Time will tell,” Newton said.

Time will also tell if Smith ever gets to play with Newton.  Smith avoided a question from a camper Friday when asked if he’d be willing to play in Carolina.

If there’s any player in the league that deserves to get a shot with a team that has a chance at a ring it’s Steve Smith. I hope Carolina respects what he’s given them over the last decade and allows him that.

Was she being treated by Dr. House? He always goes straight to Lupus, and it never is.

Chasing a ring is an exercise in futility. Ask Karl Malone and Charles Barkley. The Panthers, collectively, have much more talent than the 2-14 record suggests. Its just all about QB play.

Look at the Colts and Saints…they would be 1 or 2 win teams without their respective QBs. My point is, IF Carolina has found a QB, they will be competitive. As is the case with virtually every team in the league.

A shot with a team that has a chance at a ring?!?

I can only assume when you say you hope Carolina “allows him that” you mean they should give him a chance at a ring … by releasing him to a legitimate contender.

Newton has been phenomenal ever since he arrived in Charlotte going to workouts, getting to know his teammates, helping out Smith. This guy is a class act.

I think I read that SS’s wife actually has mono. I’ve had mono and it’s a huge PITA but hardly life threatening. What a misdiagnosis if they thought it was lupus. It’s like saying, “Yeah you either have a cold…or…CANCER. ” Yikes.

Newt was wildly erratic with his throws and blamed it on “the short guy”. Thought he may have been from DIII or something.

I agree Carolina would be competitive if they had a QB. Too bad they just set their franchise back 5 years by drafting Newton.
