Seahawks rename Qwest Field

Los Angeles Galaxy v Seattle Sounders FC Getty Images

A few months back, we mentioned that the Seahawks would probably re-name Qwest Field at some point.

On Monday, “at some point” arrived.  The Seahawks announced the team will play in CenturyLink Field starting this season.  CenturyLink purchased Qwest in April.

It’s too bad, because Qwest was actually a cool stadium name, as sponsored names go.  Centurylink sounds like the name an 80’s movie would use for some futuristic teleporting company.

    Awful

CenturyLink? Within three years my local phone company switched from Sprint to Embarq to CenturyLink … complete with repainting all their vehicles and changing all their forms and stationery. No wonder the company was having financial issues wasting all that money with each name change. Hope they don’t change the signage at the field unless they’re sure.

It’ll still be Qwest field to me.

Yay! Now we’re playing games in the Clink!

Yeah, I don’t think many people care much about the name of their phone company…but Qwest Field just kind of worked as a stadium name. I have a feeling it will be Qwest Field to most people for a while. Until Century Link wisens up and thinks of a better name.

Apparently Gregg couldn’t find any pictures of American football being played in Qwest (except when any team outside the NFCW visits) so he settled and went with a Sounders FC picture.

Qwest is a much better name. If I had the money I would change the name to…any ideas?
    1) 12th’s field
    2) Nesting grounds
    3) Fan’s field
    4) your suggestion…

It use to be called Seahawks Stadium until Qwest came knocking with a big bag of money. I remember fans were up in arms about that when it happened because Paul Allen shouldn’t have sold out to Qwest?

when I lived in Seattle it was called Seahawks Stadium… Qwest is still a better name than CenturyLink though. It’s a great facility though, I wish the 49ers didn’t play in such a dump…

Paul Allen should take a stand and not allow this to happen.

  14. chipwade says: Jun 20, 2011 5:43 PM

Paul Allen should just buy lowly CenturyLink and keep it as Qwest.

  15. panther74 says: Jun 20, 2011 6:02 PM

It happens…I remember when we played in ERICSSON STADIUM..but I do agree, QWEST FIELD was kinda cool as far as stadium names go.

Hearing the PFT complaint about their name, officials have changed it to CentwryLink. Cool.

    WELCOME TO THE CLINK.

Might as well mix something from the past with something that sounds this stupid and call it the Kingdumb.

  19. tednancy says: Jun 20, 2011 6:32 PM

    The Clink.

This has a good chance of sticking.

  24. debthebusybody says: Jun 20, 2011 6:55 PM

    How about fair-weather-fans stadium?

    Or, we-stole-that-12th-man-thing-from-Oklahoma-stadium?

    Or, we-leave-early-when-we’re-getting-beat-field?

  25. Deb says: Jun 20, 2011 7:08 PM

    @realitypolice …

My comment wasn’t knocking the Seahawks. Just taking a dig at a phone company’s expensive fickleness. I hate all the corporate names, Heinz included. But they’re paying for the privilege so what can you do? At least it’s not Fruit of the Loom :)

  26. MichaelEdits says: Jun 20, 2011 8:27 PM

I could’ve renamed the place MichaelEdits.com Stadium for $1, but I didn’t want to be associated with a bunch of losers.

(THAT, for those who weren’t sure, is how you knock the Seahawks.)

The best sponsor-named venue of all time was also the very first to feature a sponsor name – the Great Western Forum, home of the Lakers. Great Western Savings ponied up to place their name on the building, and a new source of money for teams was born.

Pink Taco restaurants wanted to be the Cardinals naming sponsor back in ’06 when the new stadium opened, but that went over like a flood in a Fizzie factory. The sponsor that should step up is Jiffy Pop – the joint looks just like a massive JP, all it needs is the wire handle.

  28. gbo2086 says: Jun 21, 2011 4:45 AM

It should be renamed… Royal Brougham Park! Screw corporate branding!

  29. tangfish says: Jun 24, 2011 4:17 AM

Man, I thought it was bad when they renamed it from Seahawks Stadium to Qwest Field (the latter is a decent name, but I hate the company, as many do). CenturyLink? That is some lame ass $hit, as well as a mouthful.

    Slapnutts field !!!
