Roddy White: Falcons will out-score everybody

Divisional Playoffs - Green Bay Packers v Atlanta Falcons Getty Images

Falcons receiver Roddy White is feeling confident about how the Falcons will look in 2011.

In fact, White said on NFL Network that the Falcons compare favorably to both the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers and to the St. Louis Rams of 10 years ago.

“We’re going to out-score everybody,” White said. “Green Bay’s got, what, four or five guys out there who can make plays? We’re going to be Green Bay South.”

Asked how he feels about being teamed with rookie Julio Jones, White compared the Falcons to one of the best offenses in recent NFL history.

“It’s going to be special,” White said. “It’s going to remind you of the Greatest Show on Turf. We’ve got a lot of explosive players and I see more explosive plays coming out of our offense. . . . He’s going to be a great player in this league.”

Its great to have an explosive offense but based on their playoff game loss, it doesn’t help if your D lets the other team put up 45 points on you.

Rolled the dice big time with Julio Jones. Time will tell.

    I totally agree BUT….

Only IF there is a season this year…

    Go Falcons!

  3. salmen76 says: Jun 21, 2011 8:04 AM

Ha Ha. That’s funny Roddy…….too funny……the Falcons had the #1 seed in the NFC and a bye and lost at home against the scrub Packers. The Falcons have never won a Super Bowl and they never will as long as they are in the NFC South with the Saints! The Saints will sweep the entire division this year. Julio Jones is a rookie bum. He’s a bum. Drew Breesus and Marcus Colston and Mark Ingram will dominate the scrub Falcons. Geaux Saints!

  4. calloustongue says: Jun 21, 2011 8:06 AM

With those DB’s they are going to need to score a ton of pts. GB South? Might want a defense before you make that claim Roddy, and a QB that doesn’t choke in big games.

  5. edsbay says: Jun 21, 2011 8:08 AM

    Dear Roddy White,

Please to not compare the Falcons (ie. one of the worst franchies in the history of the NFL) to the Packers (4 Super Bowls, and 14 World Championships)

Win a playoff game and then come talk to us.

Now back to McDonalds for y0u Mr. White.

Really! Scrub Packers!? I would like to see the Saints beating 3 NFC playoff teams on the road. Eagles, Falcons and Saints (Seeds 1 -3) and then whupping on the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

I wonder what would be Marshawn Lynch’s position…. hmmm.

You forgot the eagles Roddy, you massive donut.

  10. berniemadoffsides says: Jun 21, 2011 8:52 AM

Their run defense was terrible last year. You can have a solid secondary, but if teams are running on you at will, you’re not going to be able to beat those better teams when it matters most.

  11. dd393 says: Jun 21, 2011 8:58 AM

To be “Green Bay South” (some kind of compliment), you’ll need a couple of cornerbacks who can cover rather than chase.

  12. cavredleg15 says: Jun 21, 2011 8:58 AM

Hey Roddy, what is the historic cycle of the NFC south?

  13. cornersss says: Jun 21, 2011 9:01 AM

Hasn’t anybody learned from the Nostradamus team, the Jets?

They make all kinds of bold predictions that never come true. Its almost as if they jinxed themselves and will always fall 15 min short of the big game

  14. cornersss says: Jun 21, 2011 9:03 AM

The big difference between the falcons and old rams and why it wont be even close to the same? Marshal Faulk. You know what? Thats an understatement. HUGE DIFFERENCE. Faulk was an animal and made it easier on everyone else with his incredible hands and running ability.

  15. vargafamily1 says: Jun 21, 2011 9:27 AM

Sorry Roddy, Denfenses always rise to the top.

  16. innerlign says: Jun 21, 2011 9:27 AM

The Falcons will be swept by the Saints and the Bucs this year. Write it down.

  17. falconsfan says: Jun 21, 2011 9:29 AM

    cornersss,
Roddy probably feels pretty comfortable with a backfield of: Turner, Snelling (FA) and Jacquizz Rodgers. Jacquizz has really nice potential as a pass catching/change of pace back. Add that with Gonzo, White, Jones, Douglas, Jenkins and Ryan and you’ve got a pretty decent comparison to the Rams.

Roddy may shoot off at the mouth but he does know what he’s talking about and lays everything out on the field every game.

  18. scra22 says: Jun 21, 2011 9:43 AM

I wouldn’t make any bets based on Roddy White’s opinion. (“The Aints won’t beat us once in the Georgia Dome.”)

He has a right to be optimistic after the Falcons’ great 2010 season, but it remains to be seen if their defense will be improved at all, and it would be a surprise if Jones can make an immediate impact. Turner is slowing down and overworked, and Gonzalez is aging.

They’d be smart to stick to their game plan from last year – long grinding drives that keep their defense and the other offense off the field. That doesn’t equate to the Greatest Show on Turf, but it worked out for them.

  19. scra22 says: Jun 21, 2011 9:47 AM

“Really! Scrub Packers!? I would like to see the Saints beating 3 NFC playoff teams on the road. Eagles, Falcons and Saints (Seeds 1 -3) and then whupping on the Steelers in the Super Bowl.”

    ======

I am a Saints fan, and I don’t know what he’s talking about. I think some of our fans feel the need to trash the Packers since they have taken our throne and we (might) play them to start the season. I am under no illusions that they are scrubs.

  20. ahostiletakeover says: Jun 21, 2011 9:49 AM

I’m guessing Roddy got the idea for “Green Bay South” after watching his team get outscored two times over back in January huh?

  21. goawayeverybody says: Jun 21, 2011 9:53 AM

With a head coach like Smith who is a gutless wonder, the Falcons aren’t going anywhere. As in, not progressing to the next level. And all those close games that the Falcons won last season? They will lose them this time around. the Failcons will be a 10-6 ball club at best this year.

  22. t16rich says: Jun 21, 2011 9:57 AM

they might. but with the texans, patriots, eagles and saints offences floating around, i truly see that title as a 5 horse race for now. til than, where is the season? STRIKE SUCKS!!!!

  23. darthhitman says: Jun 21, 2011 9:59 AM

I don’t blame him for saying that Atlanta will be Green Bay South I mean, last January the Packers turned the Georgia Dome into Lambeau Field South so hell, why not go for broke Roddy

  24. nolahxc says: Jun 21, 2011 10:00 AM

The Falcons really aren’t that good. Matt “Poo Stain” Ryan can’t throw a deep ball, and the only way Roddy White knows how to get open is to push the DB out of the way–he might be the best in the league at that though.

And we all know about that defense!! Yeah!!!

  25. lbpackfan says: Jun 21, 2011 10:01 AM

    48-21

  26. darthhitman says: Jun 21, 2011 10:02 AM

nolahxc has a huge point, at the moment the officials start calling Roddy for all his push offs you will see he is NOT an elite receiver

  27. SpartaChris says: Jun 21, 2011 10:05 AM

I’ll take someone calling themselves “Green Bay South” as a compliment.

Anyway, best of luck to you, Roddy. Atlanta didn’t do anything to bolster their defense in the draft, so you’re going to need to put up some points if you want to win.

  28. acdc84 says: Jun 21, 2011 10:11 AM

Don’t go writing checks that your defense can’t cash, Roddy. I really don’t think you’re going to put up 35+ against the Packers anytime soon, and that’s what it’s gonna take.

You can have another cute 13-3 season. Just get ready to drop them pants and bend over come playoff time, once again! Matty Ice?? What a joke. Just call him “Mr. Regular Season”!

  29. jrmbadger says: Jun 21, 2011 10:24 AM

Roddy is right that they improved their offense and it is pretty good. I also believe the Green Bay South reference was a compliment.

However, they still won’t match up that well to Green Bay as of right now.

Dom Caper’s defense was just as instrumental as Aaron Rodger’s offense.

Tramon Williams, Sam Shields, Charles Woodson, and Nick Collins are a pretty good secondary. One might say they are a top 5 unit.

In a shoot-out, many times all you need to do is stop the other team once. I’d bet that the Packer D-backfield would be more likely to do that.

Not to mention that the Packers get Jermichael Finley back who is going to be tough to stop (too big for a CB, too fast for linebacker or safety).

Granted, Atlanta has a better running attack.

  30. jrmbadger says: Jun 21, 2011 10:25 AM

Atlanta would be scary if they pick up Nmadi.

  31. tramonisland says: Jun 21, 2011 10:27 AM

good luck with that roddy. tell your boy matty ice to not throw any td’s to tramon this year.

    aaron rodgers > matt ryan
    greg jennings > roddy white
    jermichael finley > tony gonzalez
    jordy nelson > julio jones
    donald driver > michael jenkins

  32. gregjennings85 says: Jun 21, 2011 10:32 AM

I know I am in the vast minority, but I think Julio Jones was the best WR available in the draft this year, and the Falcons landed a game-breaking talent for a relatively cheap price.

Jones will put their offense over the top, and moreover, will greatly cushion Tony Gonzalez’s eventual departure.

  33. gregjennings85 says: Jun 21, 2011 10:38 AM

    ______________________________

    I’d like to weigh in:

aaron rodgers > matt ryan (not even close)
roddy white > greg jennings (close, but white demands a double team. jennings, while my favorite, does not)
jermichael finley > tony gonzalez (again, not even close)
julio jones > jordy nelson (come on, man. jordy nelson is not the same kind of talent jones is. although they both excell at blocking, jones is a pure burner, and would probably throw nelson into the 5th row)
donald driver > michael jenkins (of course)

    my own additions:

james jones > jordy nelson, donald driver
    randall cobb > donald driver
    james starks > ryan grant

  34. theytukrjobs says: Jun 21, 2011 10:39 AM

Rookie WR’s rarely make a huge impact on a team, no matter how good they were in college. He will certainly help their offense, but a speedy rookie usually isn’t enough to transform an offense.

Besides, defense is their biggest issue.

  35. cowartsh says: Jun 21, 2011 10:44 AM

Wow there are some idiotic comments. To the guy who said the run defense was bad. 10th in the league is not bad and 5th in scoring defense. The problem is the lack of consistent pass rush and the nickel corner chris owens was horrible. Green bay can exploit that as well as anyone. The falcons did however beat the pack in the regular season. The playoff game got out of hand early with turnovers and nobody was beating the pack with the way Rodgers was playing. As for saints and bucs sweeping the falcons dream on you tool.

  36. supashug says: Jun 21, 2011 10:48 AM

one more year of the Matty Ice is god bull sht would be a bit much. Flacco even went by him last year and is poised to do much better then him again. Roddy White is good but is not a burner, he needs his size to push and get open

the real issue is that the ATL defense SUCKS!!!

oh and they have NO run game

other then that sure compare them to a SanDiego or Giants team

If beating the then injury-riddled-and-still-figuring-out-how-to-play-with-who-they-had Packers by 3 on a last second field goal in the regular season makes you feel better, then fine. Frankly, I’d be more concerned with the 27 point beat down they gave you in your house in the playoffs.

  38. mavajo says: Jun 21, 2011 11:19 AM

    Roddy’s wrong.

Rookie wide receivers very rarely light it up their first year. 800-900 yards would be tremendous for a rookie WR — which isn’t exactly “Greatest Show on Turf” stuff for a #2 receiver.

By the time Jones finally turns into an elite receiver (assuming he does), Gonzalez will probably be retired. Plus Turner will have another year or two on his legs. He may have gotten to ride the pine for a few years, but the way he runs is going to wear him down.

Plus, Ryan has shown little ability to be a consistent downfield passer. He can make the throws, sure, but he’s inconsistent. Not to mention, the Falcons’ playcallers have shown little inclination to run that sort of offense. They’re one of the most conservative offenses in the NFL, especially when you consider some of the talent they have.

I’m skeptical of the Jones pick. I have difficulty believing that a rookie #2 WR is going to take you from a 48-21 undressing at home to Super Bowl champ.

  39. CKL says: Jun 21, 2011 11:31 AM

I have to think Dimitroff either thinks he has the formula right this time (their team is willing to run the ball with toughness unlike the McDaniels Pats) or he hasn’t learned from his prior team’s 07 run: you can have a great QB (And Ryan isn’t that yet) and score a ton of points but as long as you have an average defense you will peter out in the playoffs because when you run into a team with a great D (or one playing great down the stretch at least) it can take your QB out of the equation and your average defense can’t make up for it.

  40. smoothjimmyapollo says: Jun 21, 2011 11:41 AM

I think its foolish of any team this year to think that they’re going to be able to rely on rookies. With no mini-camps and no OTAs before the preseason (assuming the lockout is fixed by mid-July), these guys are going to be way behind rookies of years past. Sure there have been player workouts, but players are not coaches so the young guys could be learning bad habits or running plays in ways that weren’t intended. Teams relying on big free agent signings and teams with new coaches installing new systems could also have a tough time this year.

With that said, Atlanta should still have a pretty decent team in place from last year. Yeah, GB destroyed them at home, but even as a Packer fan, I think Atlanta is a better team than they showed that day. I suspect that wasn’t the last time these teams meet in the playoffs.

  41. demons87 says: Jun 21, 2011 12:03 PM

Why is he comparing the Falcons who scored 414 pts in 2010 to the Packers who scored 388? He should be trying to prove that the Falcons are better than the 4 teams that finished with more points than the Falcons.

    They are:
    Patriots 518
    Colts 445
    Chargers 441
    Eagles 439

Note that the Falcons are much closer to the Raiders (410 pts) than any of the teams ahead of them. Maybe he should focus on beating them and then worry about the big boys.

u do realize that our “rookie bum” Julio came from the same system/coach/school/etc as ur rookie Saint Ingram whos gonna dominate us right?…and the Scrub packers? u mean the Super Bowl Champs?? at least we were able to beat the SEAHAWKS!!! hahahahahaha

Im all about being confident…but we need to make sure we don’t turn into the Bengals from last season…a lot of hype and talk and not the same production….

  44. guy0nthec0uch says: Jun 21, 2011 1:39 PM

Wow, the lockout sure brings out the tools. Lets review his exact comment.

“Green Bay’s got, what, four or five guys out there who can make plays? We’re going to be Green Bay South.”

He’s saying that with Julio Jones the Falcons offense will be much more explosive and have 4 or 5 guys that can make plays, LIKE GREEN BAY.

    A. It’s a compliment to the Packers
    B. It’s a fact

Saying Michael Turner isn’t a play maker is ignorant. Same can be said for himself, Matt Ryan, Tony Gonzalez and Jason Snelling. Factor in a healthy Jerious Norwood and Harry Douglas and it’s a lot of talent. If you disagree, go do your homework before you reply.

The Falcons went 13-3 and in the past 3 seasons have not suffered a losing year. Huge steps for the Falcons who were once the 3rd world country of the NFL. If the kid is excited about adding talent like Julio Jones and ‘Quizz’ Rodgers and that offends you perhaps you need help with your anger issues.

I agree their defense needs a pass rusher in a bad way but saying their run defense sucks show massive ignorance.

People are so quick to down others. That’s a sign of being disappointed with their own lives. Let the kid enjoy his success and be excited about his future. He’s earned. Saying he pushes off and that’s the only reason he 115 catches in 2010 is stupid. I don’t recall Michael Irvin mentioning that in his Hall of Fame speech and he was the master.

  45. dudicle says: Jun 21, 2011 2:55 PM

To the people who are placing the blame for the playoff loss to GB squarely on the defense – you clearly didn’t watch the game. Yes, the defense got beat pretty badly (which was not the norm – they had a bad game against a really hot team). Equally as concerning was the inability of the offense to stay on the field – too many three and outs. The defense was on the field WAY too much. They got worn out. I don’t think it’s a bad strategy to increase the “explosiveness” of the offense, rather than improving the defense because of ONE really bad game (for which they weren’t totally liable – see above).

Difference is, rookie wide receivers rarely make a positive impact. With his injury history, he’ll likely miss several games this season as well.

Saints beat the Seahawks in the regular season. But this is about the Falcons, who were the #1 seed playing a home and laid an egg.

    WORST NUMBER ONE SEED EVER!!!!

  50. derklempner says: Jun 21, 2011 7:51 PM

I believe the “scrub Packers” comment was directed towards all the backups on the team that were playing at that point in the season. They’re obviously not bad players, but when you only get playing time because the starter is injured, then you’re really not considered to be a good player or starter-caliber; hence the “scrub” name.

I’m a Packer fan, by the way. Go Pack go!
