Last year, Broncos cornerback Perrish Cox was arrested on charges that sounded particularly ominous and heinous: “sexual assault while the victim was physically helpless and sexual assault while the victim was incapable of determining the nature of the conduct.” Then again, the specific charge filed against a defendant often sounds much worse than the facts would suggest. In this case, however, it has been impossible to compare the alleged facts to the filed charges because none of the information regarding the charges has been released to the public.

Carlos Illescas of the Denver Post reports that, on Wednesday, Judge Paul King ordered that the arrest affidavit must be released within seven days. Though medical information will be redacted, the basic accusations presumably will be identified.

The Denver Post, New York Times, and Associated Press pursued the release of the information. Both the prosecution and the defense wanted the document to remain sealed.

Trial is set for October. If convicted, Cox faces a sentence of two years to life.
