I love the paragraph about his godfather. It shows he has some strong role models in his life, which should help him down the road.

But in my defense, there are certainly parts of that article that would indicate the kid was there only because he was broke:

“Since Dareus doesn’t have the dough for rent, he works for it”.

“You come out of college with plans of making big money, and everything goes on hold”

Or maybe it’s just because I despise yard work so much that I can’t believe anyone would choose to do it if they had options.

Your comment suffered from being a little too similar to whatswiththehate’s, but I see what you’re saying. However, the article wasn’t suggesting that Dareus needed money and was mowing lawns to get it. I think the idea is that he wanted to stay with his godfather in B’ham for the summer, and the godfather doesn’t let anyone stay for free. He expects “his” kids to work, so Dareus is doing landscaping duty. I get the feeling the godfather would have him doing landscaping duty even if Dareus were paying rent.

That was a shot across my bow. whatswiththehate is a regular on the college boards and assumes I agreed with you because Dareus is a Bama grad. Apparently he’s missed all my posts defending players from other schools.

whatswiththehate, your comment about Dareus was silly–sorry if that stings. No one is madly in love with him and the point would be the same if you were talking about Auburn’s Nick Fairley. The reality is that these first-round draft picks already have jobs waiting with their respective NFL teams and no serious employer is going to waste a position on them knowing they’ll leave when the lockout ends. Duh. That has nothing to do with my team allegiance and everything to do with plain old common sense.

I fully understand that he is “waiting out the summer staying with his godfather while the lockout drones on”.

All I am saying is that a number 3 pick overall in any draft has options to get money before he signs a contract.

I keep forgetting that I’m on a site where attitudes are dictated by the tone of the article and ones love for one’s favorite team and player and not the reality.

Can’t wait to read a different spin on similiar article with an athlete not so favored by this site and many of you college team and NFL team rival folks.

And yes, I choose my name because it’s seems opinions that go outside of the narrowminded thinking on this site isn’t respected.

The third overall pick in the draft, who is going to be a multi-millionaire no matter the rookie wage scale is, can’t find an endorsement deal for a car dealership or some local business to scratch up enough cash to get through the summer?

Or can’t just ask his agent float him a few grand a month to get by? Considering the amount of money the agent is about to make on his rookie contract, it would seem to be the least he could do.

Again, more power to him if this is the way he wants to do it, but it’s seems to me that it is far from his only option.
