Marty Mornhinweg: Michael Vick can be better than Steve Young

Marty Mornhinweg AP

Marty Mornhinweg spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator of the 49ers, with Steve Young running his offense. Now Mornhinweg has the same title in Philadelphia, with Michael Vick running his offense.

Young is a Hall of Famer and one of the NFL’s all-time great quarterbacks, but Mornhinweg thinks Vick can be better.

“I thought he could be a Steve Young-type player,” Mornhinweg told Philly.com. “Mike’s got a long way to go, but, you know what? I think he can be better than Steve.”

Asking Vick to be a better quarterback than Young is a tall order. Young led the league in touchdown passes four times, in completion percentage five times and in passer rating six times. Vick has never led the league in any of those categories.

However, there are a lot of similarities between Vick and Young. They’re both mobile left-handed quarterbacks playing in similar offensive systems. And Young didn’t become the 49ers’ quarterback until he was 30 years old — the same age Vick was last year. If Vick can be even close to the kind of player in his 30s that Young was, Mornhinweg is going to be a very happy man.

The best way to become one of the greatest players at your position is to get traded or cut by the orange-suited Bucs. That’s why Steve Young will always be better than Michael Vick.

(And so will Vinny Testaverde and Steve DeBerg? Oh, shut up.)

  2. ac0117 says: Jul 6, 2011 7:45 AM

On pure talent I’d agree, but the problem with Vick is the way he plays leads to constant injury.

He’s also nowhere near the pocket passer Young was – but I would hold off on finalizing that judgement because Vick last year was better throwing the ball than I’ve ever seen versus his Atlanta/VT years, extremely impressive considering his year ‘off’ as a backup and his years in jail.

  3. Bubby Brister says: Jul 6, 2011 7:46 AM

He also thought it was a good idea to elect to kick in an overtime game. He’s obviously a genius and knows what he’s talking about.

  4. CKL says: Jul 6, 2011 7:48 AM

I think Marty should take the wind. Why not wish for something like “I hope Vick can ever make it playing through a 16 game season?” which is just as likely.

You bet he can! Vick is the best talent in the NFL, just watch him this year with better protection and an improved Eagle defense.

  8. tigrrrr says: Jul 6, 2011 7:58 AM

Vick is a loser and so are the eagles for selling their pride for this AH! Vick… Get out of OUR nfl!!

  12. eaglesfootballfan says: Jul 6, 2011 8:02 AM

Marty is absolutley right. Vick is only going to get better this year because he knows he is the starting quaterback.

  13. angrycorgi says: Jul 6, 2011 8:02 AM

Mornhinweg told Philly.com. “Mike’s got a long way to go, but, you know what? I think he can be better than Steve.”

Later we’ll hear Mornhinweg use Kevin Kolb and Tom Brady in the same sentence. Why does it make press clippings when a coach hypes one of his own players. Call me when a coach publicly gives up on a player. If Mornhinweg says “Alex Smith has more upside than Mike Vick”, then you print that, because that would be totally unusual.

  14. emmonsh says: Jul 6, 2011 8:04 AM

only moron ever to kick off after winning the coin flip in overtime. what a loser

  15. imongo says: Jul 6, 2011 8:06 AM

Oh really? Vick is a scumbag and a despicable human being who has spent time in a penitentiary. Or are we comparing athletic ability only?

Eagles fans/coaches/front office are always just so delusional. Mike Vick will not be better than Steve Young – in fact, he is likely to be hurt for half the season and Kafka will be the QB since they will trade Colb. This is a franchise that has not won anything of any merit since 19 freaking 60. They are losers, they are vile and they are crazy. Having lived in Philly for 10 years now I have seen first hand just how mentally unstable these fans are (when they are rooting for the Phillies they have some civility). My Redskins have been a laughing stock for almost two decades and that is sad – but at least I have tasted what it is like to be a winner and I still have faith that The Danny will figure out how to be an effective owner and the team will return to glory. Sadly, for Eagle fans they have never tasted the glory and I really doubt they will – and in the off chance the Eagles win the SB someday 90% of the fans will be too drunk to remember anyway. They are wretched, ignorant fans.

yeah, and I can win the lottery tomorrow

  19. winkeroni says: Jul 6, 2011 8:28 AM

I don’t think that it’s realistic to expect Steve Young type of production out of Vick. No offense to D. Jackson, Maclin, Celek, and Avant but none of them are Jerry Rice. I’m not saying Vick isn’t as good as Young just that he doesn’t have Jerry Rice to throw to.

  20. sneckel23 says: Jul 6, 2011 8:31 AM

Who the hell cares what Marty Mornhinweg has to say?

  21. powderedme says: Jul 6, 2011 8:42 AM

That sounds alot like a parent saying that their child could be the president some day.

    Possible?

    Sure.

    Gonna happen?

    Probably not.

  22. bleedgreen80 says: Jul 6, 2011 8:45 AM

All that sounds good marty but if andy doesnt bring home the trophy this yr the whole staff will be gone inlcluding you marty

  23. malblack says: Jul 6, 2011 8:46 AM

If Vick can consistently complete the intermediate pass, Vick becomes the complete QB we’ve been waiting for him to become. But these square peg/round hole comparisons need to stop; being left handed and “mobile” is not enough to accurately compare the two as is done here, and doesn’t take into account where the two excelled or have/had weakness.

Vick has a powerful arm; Young did not. Young excelled at pinpoint accuracy; Vick doesn’t. Young was mobile, but to call Vick “mobile” severely understates his ability to explosively run; it’s like calling Adrian Peterson “mobile.”

  24. starderup says: Jul 6, 2011 8:59 AM

Yeah, about the same chance as Marty has of ever becoming a head coach again.
Vick has the physical talents, but is empty between the ears. I saw him at the Georgia Dome for years. He’ll never change. He is an arrogant liar.

  25. richm2256 says: Jul 6, 2011 9:04 AM

Any doubts that Marty Mornhinweg is addicted to crack, can now be laid to rest.

Look for Steve Young to bust him in the nose for this comparison. As a quarterback, Micheal Vick can’t carry Steve Young’s lunchbox, and this is an epic insult to Young.

And I don’t even LIKE Steve Young.

  26. bleedgreen says: Jul 6, 2011 9:06 AM

You can say Vick didn’t lead the league in any of those, but he also didn’t get to sit behind (arguably) the greatest QB the game has seen in Montana, and didn’t get to play with (not arguably) the best receiver EVER to don a jersey and cleats.

  27. stonedwhitetrash says: Jul 6, 2011 9:16 AM

well Vick should not have endured the same wear and tear on all fours while in prison belay that tear bit there may have been so tear at first.

  28. fddlnpete says: Jul 6, 2011 9:35 AM

When MK throws 7 touchdowns in the super bowl and breaks all the records SY set, lets have this discussion. Till then, pure fantasy!!

  29. choice1329 says: Jul 6, 2011 9:38 AM

Well I see some of you are a little upset that Vick got that NIKE contract huh. Vick empty between the ears LOL, I don’t think so, he is not the one sitting behind a computer writing on blogs, he is the one working and making millions. If you happen to live in Philidelphia, I would think your time could be better used by helping to clean up some of that crime there instead spending so much time worried about Michael Vick.

  30. unclemoobaa1911 says: Jul 6, 2011 9:40 AM

He said “can be”, not “will be”.

  31. MVQB7 says: Jul 6, 2011 9:47 AM

Lets see Michael Vick stay healthy for one year and actually lead his team to a superbowl. Let alone win it. Then maybe perhaps he was as good as Steve Young in a single season. If you go by the passer rating and on the field accomplishments, there is no contest. Its not even close.

  32. deljzc says: Jul 6, 2011 9:56 AM

Further proof Michael Vick is a coach’s wet dream.

Wake me up when he actually becomes a winner.

I’ll never root for that dog-killer in my life. God can forgive, I can’t.

Bad Newz Vick will be incarcerated and/or injured by game 3, so I guess all this phenomenal play is going to happen in the prison hospital league.

  34. tbpdog says: Jul 6, 2011 10:08 AM

You have to take any thing the Eagles say about their own players with a grain of salt. In the past few years they have claimed…

Mcnabb to be worth 3 #1 picks
Kevin Kolb to be worth 2 #1’s
Avant is the best #3 WR in the NFL
Jason Peters is the best LT in the NFL
Shawn Andrews to be the best LT in the NFL
Trent Cole to be the best DE in the NFL

that whole coaching staff is delusional.

  35. dcowboyfan says: Jul 6, 2011 10:25 AM

Im beginning to think that Marty Mornhinweg is taking the same drugs as Andy Reids ” convict ” children ( who by the way got in trouble once again ).
To even mention Vick in the same sentence as Steve Young is an absolute disgrace !!!
The only ball(s) that Vick should have his hands on are the ones of his cell mate !!!!
We should ALL boycott Nike !!!!!

  36. lucky5934 says: Jul 6, 2011 10:27 AM

Let’s wait and have this conversation when Vick wins a superbowl. And yes… Young sat behing Montana. But following a legend has never proven to be an easy task. In retrospect, following Kolb and a McNabb on the downside of his career meant Vick could only look better. Overall, a stupid debate to have at this point in Vick’s career.

  37. goodguyjohn says: Jul 6, 2011 10:38 AM

I find great pleasure in stories of men who recreate their lives through positive actions and changed perspective after a life of poor choices. I’m in that category.

My hat is off to Vick for turning his life onto a positive track. As far as being better than Young, I can’t see it. A successful NFL QB is the undisputed orchestrator of the offense. All of the guys in the huddle have to believe he is their leader and will win for them. No matter what he does based on his prior actions, Vick will always have a few guys in the huddle that will resent him.

That’s the difference between Michael Vick and Steve Young. I doubt he’ll get a ring either as Reid and Mornhinweg have not been able to seal the deal when it’s all on the line.

I’ll be ready to entertain all comparisons when we have half the O-line Young had.

  42. dave1961 says: Jul 6, 2011 11:06 AM

Marty Morningwig did Steve Young kill dogs too? Oh wait ….Steve Young never got in trouble. I was so glad this moron did not become the Browns head coach… I’ll take the wind in overtime, Marty…. why would anyone listen to anything Morningwig said.

The cool thing is once they trade Kevin Kolb I hope the Vick experiment goes South and the Eagles get the balls squeezed by their dumb decision. Wouldn’t Kolb get the last laugh if Vick turned into the old Vick as soon as Kolb was moved.

How would you like being a player from Andy Reid? Being told that you were being groomed for quarterback… then a reformed dog killer comes in and you hear you’re no longer the favorite koolaid in Andy Reid’s pitcher…. chalk one up for Andy’s word meaning anything!

  43. indianheadmeatpackingcompany says: Jul 6, 2011 11:08 AM

I lost any respect I had for Mornhinweg. Vick was much improved last season but overall his career is him running wildly running around. That’s it. Until last season his QB skills were back up material at best. Young did it for years, Vick has done it for part of one season. I know I’m not the only one who say Vick fall apart at the end of the season starting with the Vikings game, then onto the Cowboys games and ending with the Packers at home in the playoffs. Defenses found out how to stop him and they really slowed him down to finish the year off. How can you compare a great week 1-14 run to many years of greatness AND Super Bowl rings?

  44. johnnyglutes says: Jul 6, 2011 11:10 AM

Yeah right Morninweg. He has a looooooooong way to go and at the age of 31 he will never be as good as Steve Young.

“Vick can be better than Steve Young” That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

  46. rc33 says: Jul 6, 2011 11:33 AM

    I suppose its possible.
Vick looked like a better, more complete QB last year than any of his previous seasons, IMO.
Still, to me, it looked like NFL defenses were definitely “catching up” to his style of play toward the end of the season. Losing to a scrub team like Minnesota late in the season is inexcusable. It’ll be interesting to see how Vick fares this time around.

The prosecution had multiple witnesses testify that Vick brutally killed dogs himself (drowning, electrocution, hanging). He is a despicable sociopath and we’ll all be better off when that turd retires.

Why would we be surprised that a company that uses child labor would throw their hat in with a scumbag like Vick? I don’t buy Nike, but if I did those days would be over.

Unless vick wins 2 superbowls and has 40+ throwing TDs and 10+ rushing TDs in each of the next 4 years… i dont even expect vick entering the HOF. Hard to compare a HOF FOOTBALL PLAYER to a guy that will mostly be remembered for killing dogs.

Actually Steve Young owns the records for most rushing yards & touchdowns in the post season for a QB and also most rushing touchdowns for a QB. Those are all records I believe Vick could break.

  60. BSL News says: Jul 9, 2011 10:48 PM

Michael Vick fans have been busy whining lately about tot mom Casey Anthony’s not guilty verdict. Not because they are outraged that a baby killer will go unpunished, but because Vick served prison time and tot mom will not. These sharp shooters seem to forget that Michael Vick pled guilty, killer Casey Anthony did not. In a perfect world DEXTER would not be a fictional character and would also take on animal abusers. But unfortunately this is not the case. Instead we are stuck with a justice system that is broken.

Michael Vick murdered countless dogs and his minute prison stint is a joke in comparison to his heinous crimes. Michael Vick fought dogs for sport, and when they didn’t win him money he hung, drowned, electrocuted or shot them. He tied innocent dogs to rape stands for the brutal practice of mating. Not to mention the beatings and the syringes full of drugs forcibly injected into the dogs. It was hell on earth for the dogs at Bad Newz Kennels who had no say in their actions. And though some made it out alive, many of the dogs continue to suffer to this day. Yes, Michael Vick spent time behind bars. But since his release he is celebrated, idolized and rewarded for his bad behavior by making millions. Most recently Nike signed Vick to a four year endorsement deal.

Michael Vick fans make me sick. While searching for the perfect words to summarize the type of people they are I came upon this fantastic quote from the FB page The Rally Against Michael Vick. “The thing about Vick supporters is that they are mostly all ignorant to the facts of the case, they spout arguments about race, religion, “he did his time, and usually conclude with “get over it.” Their comments usually contain vulgarities, inaccuracies, and generalizations about those of us that fight against Vick every day. That in and of itself should tell you something about Vick himself.”

I whole heartedly believe Michael Vick is not a changed man, nor does he have any remorse for the heinous acts of cruelty he bestowed on countless dogs. Killer Casey Anthony being set free is just the latest example of our broken system
